What’s in Swindon? - Analytical Essay

The story what’s in Swindon is written by Stuart Evers in 2012. It’s about a man and a woman, and their love life. In their twenties they were a happy couple, living in isolation to the world, meaning that they didn’t take part in society and kept for themselves. However this perfect relationship ended. They split up and lived apart for years without contact. Years later Angela contacted Marty, she told him that she had rented a hotel room in Swindon, and that they should meet. While In Swindon Angela tells Marty about her marriage and that she wanted to meet because she had second thoughts, but after figuring out that Marty has change since they were together she leaves without him.
This is obviously a story about romance and getting over somebody you’ve been with a long time, finding a new daily routine without that special someone. In this case I believe it’s Angela who broke the relationship. We don’t hear who actually did it, and it seems they are both tired of the way things has become between them, but in the beginning of the story, Marty says that Angela left the Wigan’s World Famous Winter Wonderland, and that that was the last time he’d seen her. Of cause until she contacted him again. They were both equally guilt in ruining the bond they had, but she made the final move.
We hear shortly about Marty’s everyday life and routine years after the breakup. He has a very ordinary life. He works at an office and reads the newspaper while drinking coffee. It’s actually very boring. It seem meaningless and without feeling. It’s like he’s lost his spirit and will to do something important with his life, but also that he has stopped dreaming. I get this feeling since Angela says in the last part of the story, ”In my head, you’re this romantic, childish, impossible boy with all these impossible dreams. But that’s not you.
