What’s the Buzz on Smart Grids? The smart grid is a new infrastructure proposal to substitute the current outdated and inefficient electric infrastructure that supplies electricity to companies and consumers in the U.S. The new grid is expected to offer great advantages nationwide. The smart grid offers new ways to handle power by using alternative energy sources whish enable us to go green. Smart grid uses digital technology to deliver electricity saving energy, reducing cost, and increasing reliability and transparency.
The new infrastructure allows information to flow back and forward from energy plants to consumer’s households and companies enabling them to make more rational decision of consumption and production. In addition this offer consumer the possibility to regulate their electronic appliances such as heating and air conditioner system for a responsible consumption while meeting the maximum need of usage lowering cost and pollution. All this advantages are not just advantages but also a clear difference that sets the economy to propel at lees in this single sector. Furthermore the smart grid is capable of detecting power outages more precisely and quickly at the individual household levels. Smart grids are expected to reduce the energy consumption from a 5 to 15 percent nationwide if implemented across the nation. Not only will this new infrastructure enable consumers to visualize through a home display devise the consumption and cost of the energy used to minimize cost and unnecessary usage of energy but also will create up to 370,000 new jobs nationwide.
In order for this implementations to take place there must me some managing decisions to be made and approve the investment to set the necessary technology and new equipment across the nations for this smart grip to be able to operate successfully. These implementations are network and switchers for power management; sensors and monitoring devises. New systems to provide energy suppliers and consumers with up today usage data, also a communication system to relay data along the entire energy supply system.
In addition to the managerial decisions that could delay or prevent the smart grid form happening, another factor that could also hamper the development is economic reasons. The lack of funds to invest in all the technology needed to implement across the nation even with an approval it’s an obvious reason. As far as the case appoints the cost for this smart grid can reach up to 75 billion.
Our community can benefit for the implementation of smart technology as well. All the funds that will be save form the economization of energy can be channeled toward other areas in our community that needs it such as after school activity for children in their teen to prevent then to find other unhealthy activities or drugs that harm the nucleolus of our community in a great manner. Other are its safety, school, pollution, etc will haply use an extra funds to improve their systems.
I definitely approve the implementation of smart grid technology and I will like for my community to benefit from this because of all the advantages that it brings with it. Out standards of life, job opportunities and our social and cultural horizons can develop onto a different and better quality of life for single individuals onto families in general (Laudon, C., & Laudon, P., 2012, p. 36).

Smart Grids

...What's the smart grid buzz in 2011? Behind-the-scenes discussions yield fruitful harvest Kate Rowland | Feb 08, 2011     I did a lot of listening last week. One of the most-asked questions at any industry conference, participant to participant, is "what are you hearing?" DistribuTECH was no different. The answers this time, though, were far more disparate than two years ago, at the same conference, in the same venue, when the answers were clearly "stimulus funding" and "smart meters/AMI." Here's a peek at some of this year's most-discussed topics. Consumers There were definite discussions centering on consumers, selling to consumers and consumer pushback. From Craig Boice, president of Boice Dunham Group, who spoke at the pre-conference Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative Symposium, came the following opening salvo. "If we look to other industries, they are all working to create customer demand," he said. "We have to come up with compelling enough products and a compelling story to create customer demand." Terri Flora, director of corporate communications for AEP Ohio, echoed Boice, and clearly defined the challenge electric utilities are facing. "We can't think like a utility; we have to think like a Best Buy. And that's very difficult for us," she said. This is an enormous challenge utilities have identified for themselves in the coming year, according to a new Comverge survey of utilities released during DistribuTECH. While aging infrastructure and implementing variable and...

...technologies to ensure that they have the best chance at becoming and/or remaining a successful company. The preceding paper will answer case study questions that relate to some of these information technologies. Included will be questions pertaining to what’s the buzz on smart grids, the collaboration and innovation at Procter & Gamble, how much do credit card companies know about you, as well as the perils of texting. Infrastructure and organization is just as important today as it was in the past to run a successful business. However as an added bonus, the advancements in communication technologies have provided companies/organizations with the ability to increase a company's success through faster and more reliable company/personnel communications. The question then is should the implementation of involving communication technology be considered as productive for areas of business and/or intrusive for one's personal life? Is it worth it? When considering the first case study on What's the Buzz on Smart Grids, it must be taken into consideration that smart grids are different from infrastructure currently used today. Smart grids use digital technology that delivers electricity from supplier to consumer. Because these grids are structured to allow the flowing of information from a consumer back to the provider, it is considered innovative and cost efficient because it saves energy, reduces costs, and is considered to be much more reliable. This is accomplished because...

...STUDY #1 “What’s the Buzz on Smart Grids?” Reyes, Mhara Fhe P. Llano, Jeffrey D. Gabriel, Dianne Nicole G. Mendoza, Nevi D. Lipalam, John Bryan G. GROUP 3 SUMMARY: The United States is outdated and inefficient in terms of their electricity infrastructure. The grid provides no information about how the customers are using that energy, making it difficult to develop more efficient approaches to distribution. Smart grid enables information to flow back and forth between electric power providers and individual households to allow both consumers and energy companies to make more intelligent decisions regarding energy consumptions, and that’s why smart grid reduce costs, save energy and increase reliability. Information from smart grids would show utilities when to raise prices when demand is high or lower when demand lessens. If the Smart grid is implemented nationwide 5 to 15 percent in energy consumption will decrease. Smart grids is their ability to detect sources of power outages more quickly and precisely at the individual household level. In order to manage the smart grid it requires technology like network and switches for power management, sensors and monitoring devices to track the usage of energy and their distribution trends also systems linked to programmable appliances to run them when energy is least costly.SmartGridCity in Boulder, Colorado are attracting attention because of power flowing from a small number of power plants, the smart grid will make...

...What’s the Buzz on Smart Grids? CASE STUDY What’s the Buzz on Smart Grids? CASE STUDY T T he existing electricity infrastructure in the United States is outdated and inefficient. Energy companies provide power to consumers, but the grid provides no information about how the consumers are using that energy, making it difficult to develop more efficient approaches to distribution. Also, the current electric- ity grid offers few ways to handle power provided by alternative energy sources, which are critical compo- nents of most efforts to go “green.” Enter the smart grid. A smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology to save energy, reduce costs, and increase reliability and trans- parency. The smart grid enables information to flow back and forth between electric power providers and individual households to allow both consumers and energy companies to make more intelligent decisions regarding energy consumption and production. Information from smart grids would show utilities when to raise prices when demand is high and lower them when demand lessens. Smart grids would also help consumers program high-use electrical appliances like heating and air condition- ing systems to reduce consumption during times of peak usage. If implemented nationwide, proponents believe, smart grids would lead to a 5 to 15 percent decrease in energy consumption. Electricity grids are sized to meet the maximum electricity need, so a drop in peak demand...

Internet of Things

...multi-trillion dollar business. 2014 is really, finally the year that the “internet of things”—that effort to remotely control every object on earth —becomes visible in one’s everyday lives. In a sense the internet of things is already with us. For one thing, anyone with a smartphone has already joined the club. The average smartphone is brimming with sensors—an accelerometer, a compass, GPS, light, sound, altimeter. It’s the prototypical internet-connected listening station, equally adept at monitoring our health, the velocity of our car, the magnitude of earthquakes and countless other things that its creators never envisioned. Yet despite repeated declarations one of the most successful sellers of baubles that help make your home “smart,” Smart-things, has only shipped 10,000 or so units since its debut a year ago. (Compare that to, say, the 360 million smartphones sold in China in 2013 alone.) Remotely-operated light switches and weather-aware fridges may sound fun, but people have yet to be convinced that they can solve any pressing problems. Almost everyone who is actually connecting “things” to the internet remains a hobbyist or hard-core geek—the sort of person whose itch...

I n late 1979, a twenty-four-year-old entrepreneur paid a visit to a research center in Silicon Valley called Xerox PARC. He was the co-founder of a small computer startup down the road, in Cupertino. His name was Steve Jobs. Xerox PARC was the innovation arm of the Xerox Corporation. It was, and remains, on Coyote Hill Road, in Palo Alto, nestled in the foothills on the edge of town, in a long, low concrete building, with enormous terraces looking out over the jewels of Silicon Valley.
