“WHERE I’M FROM”
PART 1

I am from dishes,
From dish soap and rags.
I am from the breeding of huskies.
(small, pretty, and the puppy smell)
I am from golden fields of corn,
Whose rows hid me while playing hide and seek.

I’m from home-made ice-cream and braces, from the ice-cream made in grandma’s kitchen.
I’m from the sweat on the brow workers
And the hand-me-down household,
From say your prayers and manners first
I’m from the forgiveness of sins
With god’s wondrous grace
And for each new day I have.

I’m from southern skies and grandma’s sweet aromic kitchen, fresh baked bread and pudding pies. from my grandfather’s scars from Vietnam, my father’s bottled up memories of desert storm.

In an old trunk of ancestral pictures lie, an historical bloodline to etch in my mind.
I am from those faces in time- - recorded before I was- - just a little bud of a mighty oak.

I cannot believe I made it this far. I have been in school for twelve years and this year is the last. Some students may say, “I cannot wait until graduation,” well I certainly can! Don’t get me wrong I am excited; therefore I want it to go by slow so I can enjoy this year. While in Appomattox Elementary School, I had a rough time with my reading, however I got held back. From then on, my family had helped me through reading and also helped me go into 4-H public speaking, I received 1st place! For the last three years I have done great ! I had a rough time in VA/US history last year, but with the help of my fiancé, I passed! This senior year I plan on doing online college classes for dental hygienist. When I graduate, I am going to go to Cvcc for two years then transferring to Liberty University. The reason to be a dental hygienist is because I love the dentist and loved how straight they made my teeth. I would like to make people happy with their own teeth. I hope to be successful in college and in my career. Also to be a very good dental hygienist.

Sincerely,

The Revealing of a Monster

...‘sharp, knife-like fangs’. This should have convinced me to stay away from the woods, yet I still found myself already about two miles past the splintered fence that separates the old town from the looming darkness of the trees. My watch read 7:30 PM and I knew I should head back. The sun was beginning its descent for the day and it would soon be pitch black. As I turned to leave a ferocious wind took my hat. I ran after it. When i was finally able to dive onto my hat I realised I didn’t know where I was. There was no longer a path-like opening in the trees. I was in the middle of a circle of trees so tall that not a single ray of sunlight reached the mossy ground where I stood. I was engulfed in darkness. The stillness of the woods that at first mesmerized me, now sent an eerie chill down my spine. But the bone-rattling silence was soon replaced by the moaning of the wind as it hit my frozen cheeks. I saw movement behind me and all my instincts told me not to look, to just accept my fate and close my eyes but I couldn’t. I reluctantly turned my head to stare into the dark, crimson eyes which stared back at me with a sickening hunger while it’s long tail wagged slowly back and forth. It’s arms hung loosely, almost reaching the ground below. I stood frozen until the terrifying wolf-like creature smiled with an open mouth, revealing it’s brown, decaying canines. It swayed towards me and I knew then that there was no hope. The drooling monster got down on all fours and...

The Time I over Came My Fear

...Period 2 October 26, 2012 Stepping out of comfort zone The warm summer breeze swept by bringing with it the delicious smell of hamburgers, hot dog, and chicken being grilled out in the backyard. As I ate my enormous hamburger, I sat still amazed at what I had accomplished that day. This was one of the best summer vacations I had spent with my cousin and it was one day that I would never forget. Beep! Beep! Beep! I opened my eyes and turned to look at the alarm 4:15 AM, just fivsse more minutes I told myself sleepily. “Come on wake up so you can eat something before you leave” yelled my mom from the kitchen. The morning felt cold so I put on some sweat pants and my favorite black and white long sleeve shirt. Half asleep I ate a warm, toasted, raisin bagel with a glass of milk. By 4:50, everything was packed in the car and we were ready to leave. My sisters, Patricia and Priscilla, half asleep wrapped in their blankets, walked to the car. The cold, fresh morning air hit my face as soon as I stepped out and I was suddenly wide awake. We were now on our way to Los Osos to spend the summer at my cousin Noah’s house. We entered the 10 freeway and it was completely dead, no cars were driving about it. After about an hour of driving the sun began to rise and it seemed to give life to the freeway, cars began driving onto it and before we knew it were stuck in traffic. My sisters woke up about nine so we took the next off ramp and went to nearby Denny’s to have breakfast. We all ordered...

Community Service

...For my community service I went to a church who donated to a charitable organization and I worked in the youth’s section. This was a great experience for me because I got to work with youth’s who were interested to learn. At the church we did different activities with each other, this was very interesting. We did different activities together which built a relationship as we bond and play. Helping in a youth group was exciting because I got to work and talk with people my age. I was able to help the younger children with their homework and I typed out documents. The attitude of the community was very positive. They followed the right pathway of God and represented the church well. I must say very proudly, that I didn’t occur in any problems during the different activities. The only problem I struggled with was dealing with the different attitudes presented before me. In a way this helped me a lot because it showed me how different people were in different ways. I did understand the different personalities and attitudes because everyone came from different family backgrounds. There interest with the people was well done; they made them feel welcomed and helped with any need they had. From this experience I did grow in many different ways, it allowed me to developed more conversations and help a lot of people out during their hard times. It also showed me that you can learn a lot of things from other people. This experience made a huge impact on my life, which can carry me throughout...

Where I Live

...James McCarver Professor Ms. Karina Cadora English 1301 29 January 2016 Where I live: Sicily! Sicily is the largest island of the Mediterranean Sea. Some people refer to it as the “rock that the boot is kicking”. It is separated from Reggio Calabria by the Strait of Messina. The bridge connecting Reggio Calabria to Sicily is still a dream even though they have been promising this bridge for over 20 years. They have started construction, and it is impossible to say when or if it will ever be completed. Unfortunately organized crime exists here in Sicily, you won’t actually see it because it has become that subtle. The mafia continues to exercise its negative influence on Sicily and beyond. Most of the businesses such as shops, hotels and restaurants are forced to pay the “pizzo”, that means protection money. This extortion keeps the Sicilian people relatively poor among the Italian regions. Also you will find political corruption, the theft of public money and taxes. Yet there are business owners willing to fight against extortion. With the special protection of police and virulent public support, a growing number of business owners are operating with no mafia influence. Although the mafia has deep roots in and around Sicily, this island still has an abundance of things to offer. The Mediterranean climate with abundant sunshine, balanced rainfall, fertile soils, all create the perfect conditions for quality agriculture. The main products in Sicily are citrus...

Where I Go

...Leadership: Where I Go From Here Dawna Cranmer Arizona State University Leadership: Where I Go From Here Being a leader isn’t just someone who “leads” a group or who is a “front runner” in an organization, leadership is someone who inspires others, someone who motivates others, and someone who pulls others to be better people and stronger as individuals. A leader is an example to others. According to chapter one, in The Art and Science of Leadership, a leader is “guiding and directing on a course” and “serving as a channel” and a leader is someone with commanding authority or influence (Nahavandi, 2011). Guiding and influence play a key role in being a leader. Leaders are not born; they are made by learning themselves, growing, and therefore becoming leaders. Douglas McArthur once said, “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent” ("Leadership Quotes"). Leadership has many different definitions and some people do not realize that there are leaders around every corner. They are generally not famous and probably won’t be in the history books for years to come; however, they lead with their words and with their actions. They have a plan for success. References: ...

Where I Was Reflection

...“Where I Was’ Reflection Colby Gordillo ITT Tech GS 1145 Bart Demeter July 5, 2014 “Where I Was” Reflection . A few years ago I graduated from high school, and started working in the factory industry one month after. A few months later I attended college at Grand Rapids Community College. At that time, I did not know I was going to fail and drop out three times at that same college. And, then attend two other colleges. All of this had happened in the past 4 years. The reason as to why I had failed so many times was that I was not ready for school. I felt that I was ready because of just finishing high school, and that I would have that same mentality. Apparently I was wrong about that and it took me a few years to realize that. The first time I attended GRCC; I completed the first four weeks and then I dropped out. The second time I attended GRCC; I had to get off suspension and then I completed about two months, until I dropped out again. After that, I took a year off from school. When a year had passed I tried to return but I was on suspension once again. This time I was suspended from school and financial aid. By that time, I realized that I had dug a hole after my first fall out and it just got bigger. This hole had gotten so big, that I saw no point in attending GRCC anymore. I tried out the University of Phoenix and completed the first quarter with an A and B. I decided I didn’t like the online experience. Less than a month after, I signed up for ITT Tech. I got...

Where Should I Go?

...I want to share to u a POEM I made when I was on my high school year.i think I was on my 2nd year at high school...it is entitled "Where Should I go?" Well, it’s only now that I come to realized that i had chosen this topic because I was in the period of searching for myself. A period where I don't know where I'm going and heading. I was in a total confusion of where I should go.. Guess an identity crisis?!.. Well, I was in my teen age years and that's the problem of people when they are in that stage...   This was part of our requirements at school in our English subject. I was inspired to do this poem although it was a requirement then. Where Should I go? It was more of my search about me and my sense of direction in life. I am now 22 years old and had graduated from the degree Bachelor of Science major in Psychology. I really did learned a lot from schools especially during my college years. And this is where I’ve fully realized my attitude then and why I wrote this poem...   When we are in our adolescent stage (12-19), there are a lot of things we are thinking. This is where the identity formation develops. This is where we begin to build that identity within us. Most of the people at this stage are rebellious. Probably that's their way of finding who they are. There are a lot of confusions going on at this stage. Sometimes, most feel like they are living alone especially when they have no friends to talked to...But i cannot say that this is bad stage of human because...

Where I Stand and Why

...Assignment 4 – Where I Stand and Why There are different attitudes and opinions to assimilation. In the text “Where I stand and Why” by LaToya Powel, some different attitudes to assimilation are expressed. The text is about LaToya and her family’s assimilation in New York City. She’s interviewing her grandfather who migrated to New York City from Lumberton, North Carolina, in 1957 to get a job and a better life for his family. Her grandfather, Franklin Powell, and his wife Shirley Ruth Powell assimilated because they were forced to it. All the work was in white America, and if they wanted a job they needed to adapt the culture. The only concern in his life was to work so he could get a better life for his family, and he didn’t think about the forced assimilation. He gave his children everything that the white people had so it would be easier for them to fit in because it meant a lot to him. English was also very important to him, and he got mad when his family didn’t speak correctly because to have a conversation with corporate white people would be the survival in this world. LaToya has another point of view on assimilation. She is against it, and she doesn’t think that anyone should conform others culture. Everybody has their own identity, and nobody should be forced to change themselves. She wants to retain who she is. The white society has a huge influence on the way African Americans are living. African Americans don’t have the same rights as the white. By way of...

Why I Am Where I Am

...years of schooling I have always had the worst exsperience. I was teased all my years of elementry, middle school I was ignored, high school I was the "GEEK" who wore her mothers and sisters clothing. It seems like I have never had a break. I was never able to concentrate on school because I was just always worried about what everyone was saying about me. I was in and out of school, skipping class, hiding in bathrooms just to ignore the akward step of walking into a classroom. I never had anyone to talk to about these things, so I just kept everything inside of me. My mother "then", was not focused on us. She didnt wake us up in the mornings, she didnt get us ready for school, she wouldnt take us to school if we missed the bus. My second oldest sister did all of those things. If we missed the bus I remember having to run across the highway, and this is elementry and middle school days, to catch the bus before it went around the turn around. I never had someone forcing me to go to school or help me through my troubled years. I had to learn to coop on my own and get through things on my own. By the time I got into highschool i just didnt care anymore, I started hanging out with the wrong people doing things that I shouldnt have been doing having to switch schools countless times all eventually led me to just dropping out of high school. By this time, I was 18 and I was forced to live with my boyfriend and his family because of my mother kicking me out right when I turned 18. Previouslly...

This also forces you to choose your words carefully and you will become an expert in diction. Love a girl who writes because she understands the complexities of characters, and knows you are more than your successes, failures, winnings, or losses. When you are the hero, she'll still secretly admire your flaws. All the depths of you become her big adventure. Love a girl who writes because she will give you the most beautiful settings you've ever seen. She writes about the paradises she imagines, the paradises she has been to, and shares them with you. Love a girl who writes because sometimes a little silence is welcome. Love a girl who writes because the post-it on your refrigerator reminding you to buy milk will be original and full of adorable metaphors. And because she is so creative, she'll put the post-it in your shoe rather than on your fridge. In the fairy tale that is your life together, she will always make you prince charming, and happily ever after is a guarantee. Thoreau's Where I Lived, and What I Lived for

...1. Thoreau, when he states “ Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!” is asking for people to relegate themselves to the most basic needs and capture reality at its essence avoiding the many complications of life that deter us from what real living is. Thoreau is living in a time period where vast changes in way of life are being seen at all levels. Railroads are flourishing, industrialization is starting, and urbanization is booming which greatly differs the highly agricultural notion of the early 1800s. This notion is exemplified when Thoreau states: “The nation itself, with all its so-called internal improvements, which, by the way are all external and superficial, is jut such an unwieldy and overgrown establishment, cluttered with furniture and tripped up by its own traps.” He is calling for people to slow down and reflect on all the changes that are happening to not wildly and blindly take up everything that is coming out in technology and changes. It is summed up by the sentence “It lives too fast.” Interestingly, this sentence is in the middle of long-winded sentences in an attempt to call attention to the claim that everything is going too fast and no reflective measures are being taken for possible consequences of everything that is happening. 5. Thoreau’s advice and sentiments in the essay are to be taken as suggestions for periodic reflection on life’s true meaning. Thoreau’s main claim is that in the highly changing world, people are no reflecting on what true value...

...There are many important and deep quotes including the one mentioned above are found in Walden chapter “Where I lived and What I Lived for”. We learn his experience and values from his writings. According to me, second chapter basically focuses on “beauty of nature”. Thoreau said “The morning wind forever 64 blows, the poem of creation is uninterrupted; but few are the ears that hear it.” From the quote stated above he basically says that our life ought to be comprised of basic things and not every one of the points of interest that lives around us. There are so many ideas and thoughts depicted in this quote such as how it feels to be able to wake up in the morning and able to feel the fresh air of nature. This gives us the ideas that author...

Personal Narrative: Where I Am In College

...My path to where I am today in college has not been easy. I am a married mother of four daughters, ages 1-12, and a full-time student. As a child, I loved school and excelled. Sadly, my parents divorced the summer before fourth grade, and I did poorly in school. I realize in retrospect that I was likely fighting my first battle with depression. My mother remarried, and that relationship rapidly turned volatile not long after my brother, their son, was born. My step-dad became verbally and sometimes physically abusive towards my mother, even in front of my younger sister and me. He began to escalate. When I turned 13, my step-dad began to sexually abuse me while my mother was not home, working third shift. My grades began to slip again. Finally, unable to keep my secret and endure the abuse anymore, I told my guidance counselor....
