“Growth must not be treated as an end in itself, but as an instrument of spreading prosperity to all”
Global Hunger Index, 2012
India was ranked 65th Pakistan at 57th and Sri Lanka at 37th position, total out of 79 countries. Whereas there are 15 countries that have managed to reduce it by 50 percent or more.
1. Mid Day Meal - 11,937 crore rupees
2. Food Subsidy - 60, 573 crore rupees
3. ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) - 15,850 crore rupees
4. MNREGA - 33,000 crore rupees
In India 36 percent of women are underweight during their child bearing age and 43.5 percent of the children under age of 5 were underweight.
Now if we turn to the recently developed UNDP multidimensional poverty index (MPI), which more accurately measures income on the basis of health, education Etc., we will find situation even worse. According to this 65 crore people in India are poor and it amounts to 55% population of the country. Eight states of the India (Bihar, Jharkhand, chattisgarh, MP, UP, WB, Odisha and Rajasthan) account for more people than those present in the 26 poorest countries of Africa.
United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF)
India ranks better only than Ethiopia in the number of malnourished children (under five years of age). Ethiopia has 51% malnourished children and India has 48%.
India is now ranked among the 50 nations with highest under-five child mortality rate. It has been placed at number 46 in the list of 193 countries. India’s neighbors Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh protect their newborns much better and rank 52, 59 and 61 respectively. (2012 data of UNICEF)
According to right to food campaign two thirds of our women are anemic.
Around 23 lakh children, aged 1-59 months, died in India in 2005 alone. Of these, more than 60% were from five causes — pneumonia, prematurity and low birthweight, diarrhoeal diseases, neonatal infections and birth asphyxia and birth trauma.

National expenditure on healthcare is amongst the lowest in world. State government barely spends 0.5 percent of their GDP on healthcare and hygiene as compared to one percent in the 1970. Whereas average public spending of less-developed countries is 2.8 per cent of GDP. Only 17 per cent of all health expenditure in India is borne by the government, the rest being borne privately by the people, making it one of the most highly privatized healthcare systems of the world
The comparison of health expenditure with other countries suggests that India’s public health expenditure is only 17.9 per cent of total expenditure on health care while it is close to 90 per cent for smaller countries like Bhutan and Maldives.
Quality of death index
It is new study on the provision of end of life care, takes a look at the quality of life and care made available to the old and dying in developed and emerging economies of 40 countries.
In a scale of ten, the US was at 6.2 while India has 1.9. Even countries like south Africa which had got independence after India has an index that is double that of India’s .
Quality of water
According to the United Nations (UN), one lakh people die each year of waterborne diseases in India. A planning commission report adds that out of over 600 district, one third (203) have high fluoride content in drinking water that causes flourisis among 6.5 crore people. 35 districts have high arsenic content that results in 50 lakh people suffering from poisoning, 206 districts have high iron content and 109 districts have high nitrate content.
Per capita food consumption
Each Indian gets to eat about 178 kg of grain in a year, while a US citizen consumes 1,046 kg. Compare this to 182 kilos recorded by the LDCs (Least Developed Countries) and 196 kilos in Africa. Milk consumption, in fluid form, is 78 kg per year for each person in the US, compared to 36 kg in India and 11 kg in China.

Such then is the horrific condition of the people of our country that too after 65 years of independence. This is surely matter of grave concern. Is it not time to discuss various alternative models to better the policies of governance?
For those serious about our country and its future, there is an urgent need for discussion of various models and policies being put forward like national advisory council, various commission reports and from civil societies.
We have to use our rights (RTI, Right to Vote Etc.) in order to curb this problem from our state and make it a better and prosperous nation.

Where We Stand with Isis

...Where We Stand With ISIS This past weeks newspaper clipping informs us that defense chiefs from 22 nations met at an air base in Washington, D.C. on the matter of how ISIS is going to be a long term campaign, how every individual state will be able to cooperate, and what they can do to continue on delivering the humanitarian assistance of all the populations that have been affected. This article is a perfect example on foreign policy and how president Obama is acting on the actions of ISIS and what he has done to try and stop them. Just like we discussed in class, foreign policy is the process of decision-making and at this very moment Obama is starting to evaluate different options on decision-making. President Obama is in the starting point of the decision-making process, which is the rational model. The rational model consists of 4 main objectives: set goals, evaluate their importance, calculate the costs and benefits, and choose which action has the highest benefits and lowest cost. President Obama exemplifies this process by meeting with 22 defense chiefs on the matters of ISIS and also a senior military official stated, “"This meeting is to share our vision, discuss coordination and our common understanding of the way ahead." Again, the U.S. led coalition is still in the works of implementing a more thorough action on ISIS. The United States foreign policy towards ISIS is an example of relative power; the perceived amount of power one person or entity...

Lemonade Stand Business

...Lemonade Stand Informal Business Report • Branding strategy. In Part I, you decided part of the brand when you developed your pricing strategy. Continue with the other parts of the marketing mix (place, promotion, and product), and discuss how the lemonade stand should be branded utilizing this marketing mix (Chapter 13). For our company to continue being successful at what we do, we have to consider a branding strategy that would make sure the location and product are communicated properly and are easy to remember for our target audience. We have discussed one of the major components of a marketing mix in our previous paper and it obviously plays a big role in a branding strategy. People feel a certain way when they are buying a product at a certain price point assuming the quality is up to the standard. The location of the lemonade stand is most likely the most important part of the branding. To brand this business we plan on using concentrated marketing that will focus on specific customers. This will allow us to deliver exactly what we want and when we bring new ideas the customers will already know what to expect. If we succeed, we will be able to charge a premium in the market because the market knows why we are better and won’t hesitate to pay a little more for it. • Opportunities for new locations. Your stand in your neighborhood has been very successful and you are considering expanding operations. In doing so, you will need to outline some criteria for potential...

The Hunger Games By Katniss: An Analysis

...Imagine a world where no one’s voice was ever heard. We could still be under British rule. There could be no such thing as equal rights. Or we could be living in a society where people are bullied. At one point, someone took a stand and decided to stand up for what they believed in, making our country what it is today and guaranteeing that we have freedom to speak for what we think is right. It is important for people to stand up for what they believe in because it inspires other people to stand up for what they believe in and can help solve problems. When you spread your opinion to others, it can inspire them to stand up for what they believe, and may help them spread the word about what’s right. In the text “ The Hunger Games”, Katniss...

The Greatest Day of Hunting

...beginning of archery season for this year. I went to the high school football game with some of my friends and afterwards went spotting. Thankfully we got an early start because it started getting really foggy as the night went on. We went to our usual places we spot around my house and saw a good few deer surprisingly, being that the weather was warmer and the wind was not moving at all. There were a few nice bucks we got to look at then we decided to check out the spots that a few of us were hunting in the morning. When we drove to my friends field where his stand was he was disappointed because we didn't see a single deer. Then we turned around and headed toward the patch of woods where I was hunting. Thankfully we saw a lot of deer in the field beside the corn. As we drove back the lane we saw eyes in the spotlight. I gave the spotlight to my friend to hold it on the deer and a grabbed the spotting scope. I zoomed in and focused it on the deer. My jaw dropped as soon as I saw it. Its rack was huge. From what I could tell it had ten points and it was really thick with tall points. We got out of there quietly and quickly as to not to spook it for in the morning. I got all my stuff together and went to bed. I woke up in the morning, got ready as quickly as possible and headed out the door. When i got in my stand it was still pitch black out. As time went on you could see the sky getting lighter and the birds starting chirping. A little before i could shoot I...

Then what shall I tell them?" 14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' " Hmm. I have to be honest. As I rested my spirit on these verses, the lord asked me this question “do you know who I am?” I said “yes lord” I have to be honest, at that point nothing came to my spirit. this has been one of those weeks where I've had a hard time resting my spirit to hear from the Lord.... but I am pretty sure I know who my lord is... ...unrelated to one another. Specifically, the espoused values were generic and terminal in nature and unrelated to the tasks and goals at hand. To avoid the confusion in the minds of practitioners, and as reflected in the literature itself, a Strategy Quadrant (content), consisting of Stand, Standing, Shared values and Steps is proposed. The process of developing the 4Ss of strategy is delineated in terms of Mintzberg's "think/see/do first" processes (Strategy Triangle). The context ofcontext of strategy is defined in terms of stability and complexity (Strategy Duality). It is argued that, in complex and unstable contexts, the traditional mode of "think-first" deliberate strategies which set "thinking" apart from "doing" is becoming increasingly ineffective. The unpredictability of complex contexts, in which we operate, leave us with no choice but to be markedly adaptive rather than attempt to be overly prepared. Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) are the order of the day, and the organization's Standing (desired future state) and Steps have to emerge in action, rather than be pre-determined, in the development of strategy. However, this emergence of strategy, ought to be predicated on a Stand (strategic perspective or position), and a set of Shared values, without which emergent strategies may well lead to chaos. The principal role of the leader in a CAS is not to increasingly...

Leadership and the Pine Tree

...order to be successful in life Mayukh Biswas | B14033 | Leadership and the Pine Tree | AbstractThis assignment looks into the qualities of the Pine Tree, from personal experience and intuition and from ancient teachings and tries to relate it to the qualities a leader must possess in order to be successful in life Mayukh Biswas | B14033 | “Letting go gives us freedom, And freedom is the only condition for happiness” - Thich Nhat Hanh We spend each and every day of our life in the mad rush towards success. Yet we are not satisfied with our life. There always seems to be something missing. As Thich Nhat Hanh correctly points out, happiness can only be attained by gaining freedom. And freedom comes only when we let go of everything, including our thoughts. “A person’s mind is so powerful, it can invent, create, experience and destroy things with thoughts alone” A person who desires freedom has to realize the fact that it is not him who controls his thoughts, but his thoughts who control him. Our thoughts are in command and we unknowingly have become its slaves. This fact can be related to our everyday lives. For instance, I have an assignment to write for the subject “Zen and the Executive Mind”. I freshen up after an entire day attending classes and then sit to write my assignment. I know I have to hurry up, because the deadline is tomorrow and the assignment has to be 2000-3000 words long. But as soon as I start writing the first line, I start thinking about the argument...
