Brontë also uses characterisation to explore equality in marriage and this is most notably done through the portrayal of Blanche Ingram as a potential love interest for Rochester. Blanche is shown as being conceited with her declaration of what she wants her husband to be ‘I am resolved my husband shall not be a rival, but a foil to me’ (Jane Eyre, Wordsworth Editions, pg. 157). The use of the noun ‘foil’, clearly demonstrates her belief that she should be better than her husband and that her husband should only be there to help her seem more superior, ‘I shall exact an undivided homage’(Jane Eyre, Wordsworth Editions, pg. 157). With the characterisation of Blanche, Brontë is exploring the idea whether or not there are some people who marry to have superiority over their partners due to their societal differences and not because of love.

Character Foils In Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre

The descriptions of Miss Ingram go on to note her lavish clothing and hair as well as her complexion and eyes being very noteworthy. This description contrasts Jane, who has a more plain appearance. Miss Ingram seems to use her beauty as a means to attract Mr....
