Who is Shakira?

Shakira, listed number 53 on the Forbes lost of most powerful women has been a big influence in the music industry. Her songs always top the charts and she is well known for her different way of singing. She is an inspiration to many people especially those of Hispanic descent, giving them hope that they as well can become like her. Shakira has stated in one interview "I have no idea of where I want to go musically, but I'm fine that way. I don't need to remain faithful to any concept, you know." (Hooper, “Shakira’s Prime Time”) This quote is significant because it proves that she loves to do her own thing and succeeds in doing that. You don’t need to know exactly where your life is going but in the end that’s fine and you should be happy. She really stands for that.

Shakira had to work very hard in order to be where she is today. There was many peop;e that doubted her that sge sould actually be somebosy in the music industry. Very early on at age 2 she encounters an experience with dealth, her brother was killed by a drunk drver. She says "It made me very necrophobic," she tells Scottish newspaper The Herald. "For a long time I feared death in all its aspects." (Wang, “Celebrity Central: Shakira”). After working hard, she got a record deal with Sony Columbia, and released an album but unfortuanly it wasn’t popular selling only about 1,000 copies. Soon after she tries something different and decided to act. But then again that didn’t go very well either, “ was a very bad actress," she told London's Observer newspaper. "But I had a lot of fun." (Wang, “Celebrity Central: Shakira”) She gained popularity when she released the album Pies Delcalzos (Bare Feet) and that was her first rock album. Two years later she starts getting more attention and sells over a million copies in the U.S. alone of her fourth album, Dónde Están Los Ladrones? In the year 2000 she is nominated for 5 grammys and greatly enough wins two. She dedicates one award to Columbia stating "that country that is going through difficult times right now but that never, never forgets how to smile. This is for you, Colombia" (Wang, “Celebrity Central: Shakira”). Her first English album was released in 2001 and it was very popular. This was a big step in her career. In the next couple of years she releases albums and singles never going idle in her music. In 2011 she confirms her relationship with Gerard Pique, a soccer player for FC Barcelona and Spain National Team. After announcing her role as coach on The Voice on September of 2013, Shakira releases that she’s pregnant. "As some of you may know, Gerard and I are very happy awaiting the arrival of our first baby!" (Wang, “Celebrity Central: Shakira”). On January 22nd Milan, her son is born.

Shakira is very known for her heart, she is willing to use her fame to help those in need. She says, "It is as important as my musical career." (Wang, “Celebrity Central: Shakira”). Two of her works are Pies Descalzos and ALAS. Pes Descalzos is a foundation improving education, nutrition, and the lives of the thousands children living in harsh conditions because of the violent internal conflict in Colombia. Also known as the Barefoot Foundation, it supports children and their families, and opens doors for improvement of the conditions they live in. it runs schools in Columbia where more many children receive nutritious meals, education and psychological support services from the schools, ultimately benefiting 30,000 less fortunate children. Pies Descalzos also works in Haiti and South Africa. ALAS or “wings” is another one started by Shakira. She joined Colombian and Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez to launch the campaign in Panama City and the promise to fight conditions that kill 350,000 children each year in the region, the Associated Press reports.

Ethnic Diversity

...background and traditions, those immigrants establish their own heritage, customs, traditions and values to build their own identity. This raises the concept of panethnicity. Panethnicity is a collection of different small identities which form a community. The different ethnicities in panethnic community have similarities in their customs, values, language and music. ( Andrea Bedoya, 2007, P1). Shakira and her family was one of the families who migrate to USA, when she became a famous singer all over the world, she tries to maintain her origins and culture through her lyrics and symbols in her songs. These movements of different origins and parts created diasporas who have to maintain their roots with their origin land, looking for their ancestral land and culture although they have to cope with the new land and culture, Shakira in her song presented these feelings clearly through the music, lyrics, setting, clothes, instruments and dancing. She tries to save her culture through singing. Karim (1998, P2) argued that “diasporas are conceptualized as comprising members of an ethnic group who reside in the home land and in a number of other countries where they or their ancestors may have arrived as immigrants.” Introduction: Wherefore, the sense of belonging to another land and culture makes the diasporas maintain their habits, language, rituals and traditions, although of their conflict of being away from...

Business Ethics

...behave in a social responsible manner. The relationship between companies and stakeholders is key ingredient in the success of any organisation. Making managerial decisions upon different circumstances is more difficult because the existence of different ethical approaches. A stakeholder is an individual or a group of individuals that affect or can be affected by corporate activity. Stakeholders are often loose grouping of factors that may be brought together and stirred into action by some specific circumstances as an example Shell and the kidnappings in Nigeria where militant groups have been kidnapping workers from oil companies in exchange of jobs. The key issue in this case is poverty and the lack of jobs in the region. Individuals who have been affected by this phenomenon created groups against the government policies and how the country is run. This stakeholder (militant groups) argue that the distribution of revenue from oil related activities is not fair, in the other hand the money made is been used to develop other part of the country while the area where the oil is exploited remains in poverty. Oil extraction activities are highly pollutant; it has affected the lives of fisherman and farmers. GlaxoSmithKline and Developing Country Access to Essential Medicines is a perfect example of how society is the most important stakeholder and when there is a big issue affecting or threating lives of millions of people you have to get the best outcome for a big portion of...

...can’t just wander around and do what you like, that is now how the system works. The border patrol in Arizona has got some new laws, for themselves actually, which makes the capable of asking pedestrians who might seem strange. If the border patrol thinks that there is something fishy about the person they spot, they are allowed to ask for ID to see if the person actually lives in the US, and are not from Mexico, Guatemala etc. When I’m talking about immigration from Mexico and Guatemala, I’m talking about Illegal Immigration. Illegal immigration to the United States, also referred to in the media as undocumented immigration, is the act by foreign nationals of entering the United States without government permission. And now we come the biggest question: Why are their so many immigrants heading over to the United States? There are actually many reasons and explanations to this and I will comment on some of them. Overpopulation is just one of them. The reason behind this is because that Mexico is filled with unemployed citizens and this causes them to take the chance and cross the border. This is a great social and economic problem because people who don't work get frustrated and can't support their families. It is like an evil circle that just will circle around those who gets in. The number of immigrants in the United States is around 12 million. And these 12 million...

It tells how she came to the United States in 1963. This was a time when there was a lot of racial profiling in society. Her parents wanted their children to fit into society without being judged due to their race so they made sure they spoke, wrote, and communicated the English language without flaw. For Tanya, this was appropriate at the time. As Tanya got older, she experienced a time change. Society and their views on ethnicity and identity, shifted. With this type of change, Tanya, being a Latina and not knowing her native language, was frowned upon by other Latinas. Tanya had to take classes to learn the language. She felt like she didn’t fit in with the other Latinas who looked the part and spoke the language. Tanya starts her story with a phone conversation with a Native Latino about starting Spanish classes and when the man on the other end of the line hears her last name, Barrientos, he pauses, knowing the familiarity of it. Tanya was Latino and needed to take his Spanish classes. This reaction, to Tanya was all too familiar. She points this out when she asks, “Do...

Immigration Essay

...Essay We all see America as a big country where dreams can become reality, - The American Dream -, and in my opinion it is true. America has become a big destination for immigrants from Mexico, Spain, Africa etc. and in my opinion it is great because for a nation as big as America, it is important to have immigrants from different society to build an even greater society. The society as we know as America. Of course many people think it would be better to have one common culture, nationality or religion because then they might have the same habits, norms and the same sense in terms of policy, but I think they are wrong. I think they are wrong because in a country as big as America you will need many immigrants from different places for the influence of the culture and the people. The influence of immigrants is very good, because it is forming a strong society with a lot of different cultures, which means they get affected by each other in a positive way. The melting pot, also known as “the salad bowl”, is a synonym for a country build with a lot of different immigrants from different places, to build a strong society. Well we can definitely say that America is the melting pot, because of all the immigrants that have built such a strong and big country as America. It is not a surprise that there are many Immigrants in America, because America is a country where people, think that their dreams can become true and they want to secure their kids future. Most of the immigrants...

...Shakira Miller English W104 September 5, 2005 Question 3 page 23: Cut out a newspaper ad that contains a drawing or photograph. Bring it to class together with a paragraph of your own (75-100 words) describing how the message of the ad is directed to a particular audience and commenting on why the illustration was selected for that audience. Since this is an internet advertisement it is aimed at global audiences. The advertisement was intended for many different people around the globe to see. The writer of the ad used a man in his picture. I think that he used a man in the picture not to be subjective to just men but used the man as in the context of man kind. Man kind meaning man and woman. This is a gas credit card advertisement and you know that by the picture of the credit card with the gas symbol. You know that it is a credit card because at that bottom of the card is a place for a name. This ad is intended to reach consumers who travel a lot. The advertisement colors appeal to both men and women. The use of bright colors appeals to women for example the use red and yellow. The colors black and blue appeal more to men. The advertisement uses the color yellow to transition to the many examples that are presented in the article to inspire people to want the credit card. The tire rim is used as an example to get to the picture of the red car. You know that it is a red car because it has a picture of a white plate on it which then transitions to the...

Logical Fallacies

...confusing chronology with casualty, either-or reasoning, equivocating, failing to accept the burden of proof, false analogy, hasty generalization, overreliance on authority, oversimplifying, personal attack, red herring, slanting, slippery slope, sob story, straw man. I have gathered four advertisements that have fallacies. The fallacies are slippery slope, overreliance on authority, and hasty generalization. My first finding is an advertisement with the fallacy slippery slope. The advertiser tells people “Use this 3D White collection together and get a noticeably whiter smile in just two days”. Slippery slope is defined as pretending that one thing inevitable leads to another (Axelrod and Cooper 621). The advertisement has the celebrity Shakira smiling with beautiful white teeth. It has three Crest 3D White products a toothbrush, mouthwash, and toothpaste. Advertiser say’s “Reveal your inner rock star with a 3D White smile”. Also, it claims that “life opens up with a whiter smile”. This advertisement is pretending that life will be better if people use its products. It will also supposedly make your teeth glamorous white. The toothbrush is also labeled Pro-Flex, and this makes people think that professionals use it. The toothpaste claims to remove up to ninety percent of surface stains in five days. There is no proof your teeth will really be glamorous white. A slippery slope is only one type of fallacy, and overreliance on authority is another fallacy found in advertisements. ...

This was the family side of case, now the problem is business related because David was recently assigned as a business partner in SWM. He possesses five percent shares in it that equals to total value of $2.5 million. Also, he had to pay debt obligation of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The partnership accord of SWM clearly indicates appropriate amount of interest that can be repurchased for undesirable grounds. Adverse reasons include divorce fillings and it cost $0.60. Besides that, this lawful contract has restricted the deliberate disclosures of financial records covering returns from annual duties and remuneration of other partners. ...artist, producers, and marketing teams have admitted are actually helping them succeed within the new generation of the music industry. Therefore, a lot of media will be laid out to identify why the industry is spreading the rumors on such a downfall when the industry is doing better than ever before. Many artists, that everyone will most likely know worldwide, have spoken up on why piracy is not bad but rather helpful in sales and who are also collecting a fan base faster then ever before. Furthermore, the focus will continue on the benefits of music piracy and the ways it is already working; such focus will conclude on why an independent artist and A-list artist should actually go all in on this little issue and just accept where music piracy is heading. It was the year 1999 when Napster was built up among the cyber community that which was an independent peer-to-peer file sharing service that helped many college student and people just on the web to easily receive MP3’s of an artists album. Ethnicity

...“African – Americans, Asian – Americans, and Latino’s have been depicted in television, sports, and films in ways that have been changed in our society” (Omi 655). Stereotypes play an important role in today's society and particularly in Propaganda. According to the Webster's Dictionary stereotyping is defined as “a fixed conventional notion or conception of an individual or group of people, held by a number of people.” (Webster’s dictionary) Stereotypes can be basic or complex generalizations which people apply to individuals or groups based on their appearance, behavior and beliefs. Stereotypes are found everywhere. Though our world seems to be improving in many ways it seems almost impossible to liberate it from stereotypes. For example, African- Americans are associated with basketball, and acting. Asian – American men are made out to be the bad guys in film, women are seen as prostitutes and are sexual abused. Last but not least Latino’s are popping up everywhere, in hit TV shows like Ugly Betty, in major league baseball and in the music business. Stereotypes have existed since the beginning of time in our everyday life through religion, politics and the media. Humans have the tendency to use stereotypes in their humour, their descriptions of others, and even in their beliefs. One may believe it is possible to rid oneself of such habits; however if one looked at the regular promotions of propaganda, it would make this objective impossible. Stereotypes, however, aren't...

Qatar World Cup 2022 Bid

...Qatar World Cup 2022 Bid With the 2010 FIFA World Cup in our rear view mirror, soccer fans are still singing the catchy theme song “It’s time for Africa” by Shakira, but who will it be time for in 2022? According to FIFA rotation, since Brazil is hosting in 2014 and Europe in 2018, either Asia or North America will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The U.S., bidding on behalf of North America has already had the opportunity to host the 1994 World Cup, unlike Qatar bidding on behalf of Asia and the Middle East, but is Qatar capable of hosting this magnitude of an event? The answer is yes! Qatar has experience in hosting large sporting events, has the financial assets to make them possible, developed cooling technology to reduce temperatures in stadiums, will have improved infrastructure and more than adequate housing for teams and visitors alike. All of these factors are elements that FIFA looks at when choosing host countries for World Cups. The first factor FIFA considers when choosing a host country is whether or not it has the ability to organize and put on an event like a World Cup. Qatar impressed many with how it was able to organize and accommodate the 2006 Asian Games which included more than thirty events for men and women. The way in which thousands of volunteers were directed and utilized for this event is still unrivaled in the Middle East. Sepp Blatter, president of FIFA, endorsed the idea of Qatar being the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup based on the country’s...
