Why Bother Making Your Own Cleaning Products?

Why bother making cleaning products, you may ask? For one thing, it’s a very inexpensive idea of using common items you probably already have in your pantry. These recipes are easy to assemble and make cleaning more pleasurable by not having to deal with harsh fumes and nasty chemicals. I just can't tolerate those old cleaners anymore.

It’s amazing how really well they work. They are especially nice when you have little children who want to help Mommy clean and you can feel good knowing that they can squirt and scrub to their hearts content. The wonderful aromas from the essential oils are so nice and smell “natural” compared to the store kinds. Since I've discovered essential oils, chemically, artificial fragrances almost make me sick! It makes cleaning feel like having a “spa moment”! Buying the essential oils might seem a little costly at first, but a little goes a long way and they can be used in so many other ways in your home, as in treating illness and stress.

“Soft Scrub” (this one is my all time favorite. My work horse; works great on my cruddy stove top, as well as cleaning the grime and soap scum in the tub and bathroom sink. Smells good enough to eat!)

1 2/3 c. baking soda
½ c. liquid soap (Dr. Bronner’s)
½ c. water
2 T. white vinegar
Essential oil (optional) ~I like peppermint
Stir soap into baking soda. Add water and stir until smooth. Add vinegar and essential oil and pour into squeeze bottle. Great for tub and bathroom sink.

Whitening Scouring Powder

1 c. baking soda
2 t. cream of tartar
1/8 c. borax
¼ c. grated lemon, orange, or grapefruit peel.
15-20 drops citrus essential oil
Pour into shaker top. Use for deodorizing and cleaning cutting boards, sink, stainless steel, smelly sinks and disposals, picnic coolers, and lunch boxes.

Lemon Blast Appliance Cleaner

1 t. liquid soap
1/8 c. white vinegar
4 drops lemon, lime, or orange essential oil
¼ c. lemon juice
2 c. water
1 t. borax
Combine in a spray bottle

All Purpose Household Cleaner (another fave)

In 16 oz. spray bottle, mix 2 T. white vinegar with 1 t. borax and then fill rest of bottle with very hot water. Shake until borax dissolves and add ¼ c. liquid soap and add 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Furniture Polish (General Dusting)

Combine in a 16 oz. spray bottle:
2 T. light olive oil
20 drops or more of lemon essential oil
¼ c. white vinegar
Enough distilled water to fill rest of bottle. Shake. Spray a bit onto dust rag.

Glass Cleaner

club soda or ½ spray bottle with water and ½ full with vinegar. Add 8 drops essential oil.

Carpet Freshener

To make a carpet freshener, add 16-20 drops of essential oils to a cup of baking soda. Mix well and place in a covered container overnight so that the oil can be absorbed. Sprinkle over your carpet the next day and then vacuum the powder up.
1 cup baking soda
16-20 drops essential oils

Senior Thesis - How to Improve the Environment

...that needs to be looked at more seriously in order to improve the environment. Recognizing and correcting the problem and promoting the positive aspects will ultimately improve the environment. In order to maintain a healthy environment, society must become aware of how day-to-day activities impact the environment and they also need to be ready to approach and change such lifestyles. So how can we, as individuals, improve the environment? Why When talking about environment related issues, most people just don’t care; they are only doing enough to get by for themselves. The only concerns they have are paying their bills on time, taking care of their family, keeping their job, and being happy. People are contemplating the fact that they are just one person, and the changes they make won’t make a difference so why should it matter. (Savage) If this mind set of people changes then that one person will turn it to hundreds and thousands of people and differences in the environment will start to be seen. There are multiple different reasons on why you should care about the environment and what impacts it. Approximately 40% of deaths globally are cause by pollution, and the number of humans that are diagnosed with diseases from pollution are increasing. The more we are polluting our air, water, and soil, and degrading our environment the more the population is hurting. (Cornell) This chart shows deaths due to cardiovascular disease. Corporate Strategy

...betrays the origins of strategy, which lie in the military. Indeed, long before companies were said to have strategies, strategy was a well-developed art within the military sphere. The first writer on strategy is generally held to be the Chinese philosopher, Sun Tzu, whose most popular work, The Art of War, is widely read to this day (Sun Tzu, 2005). In Sun Tzu’s view, the art of generalship was about outmanoeuvring your opponent, convincing them that you were strong in places where you were weak and, conversely, that you were weak in places where you were strong. It was about luring the opposition into a position of weakness before battle was engaged, so that even if you possessed weaker forces, you could overcome the enemy through guile and cunning. Military writers often make a distinction between strategic decisions and tactical decision-making. Activity 1.1 Strategic and tactical decisions Pause here to reflect. Try to identify some differences between strategic and tactical decisions. Generally speaking, strategic decision-making is about the big picture. In the military, for example, it is about how you plan the campaign, rather than how you engage in battle on the day. There is also a time dimension, because...

...I. INTRODUCTION – RISK MANAGEMENT The technique of risk assessment is used in a wide range of professions and academic subjects. Engineers "risk assess" bridges to determine the likelihood and effect of failure of components, and social welfare workers "risk assess" their clients to determine the likelihood of the reoccurrence of anti-social behavior. Risk assessment has become a commonly used approach in examining environmental problems. It is used to examine risks of very different natures. Definitions in risk assessment are all-important because of the wide range of uses of the approach, and different meanings of terms used by different groups of experts and practitioners. Hazard is commonly defined as "the potential to cause harm". A hazard can be defined as "a property or situation that in particular circumstances could lead to harm" Risk is a more difficult concept to define. The term risk is used in everyday language to mean "chance of disaster". When used in the process of risk assessment it has specific definitions, the most commonly accepted being "The combination of the probability, or frequency, of occurrence of a defined hazard and the magnitude of the consequences of the occurrence". The distinction between hazard and risk can be made clearer by the use of a simple example. A large number of chemicals have hazardous properties. Acids may be corrosive or irritant to human beings for example. The same acid is only a risk to human health if humans are exposed...

What are strategic management and strategy? 2. Why does strategic management matter? 3. What elements determine firm performance? Strategic Management: A Core Concern for Apple The Opening of the Apple Store Image courtesy of Neil Bird, http://www.flickr.com/photos/nechbi/2058929337. March 2, 2011, was a huge day for Apple. The firm released its much-anticipated iPad2, a thinner and faster version of market-leading Apple’s iPad tablet device. Apple also announced that a leading publisher, Random House, had made all seventeen thousand of its books available through Apple’s iBookstore. Apple had enjoyed tremendous success for quite some time. Approximately fifteen million iPads were sold in 2010, and the price of Apple’s stock had more than tripled from early 2009 to early 2011. Saylor URL: http://www.saylor.org/books Saylor.org 4 But future success was far from guaranteed. The firm’s visionary founder Steve Jobs was battling serious health problems. Apple’s performance had suffered when an earlier health crisis had forced Jobs to step away from the company. This raised serious questions. Would Jobs have to step away again? If so, how might Apple maintain its excellent performance without its leader? Meanwhile, the iPad2 faced daunting competition. Samsung...
