...Critique of “The common App Fallacy” by Damon Beres Damon Beres, a columnist for New York University’s Washington Square News, professes his point view on the Common College Application and lists what he believes to be wrong with it. Beres presents the main bulk of his argument in a conversational tone, which has emphasis over conciseness and logic rather than fact. It is clear from the beginning that Beres’ target audience is: college students, roughly his age, who read the NYU school journal. In his article “The Common App Fallacy,” Damon Beres blasts the Common College Application, citing how the one-size-fits-all application is ruining the college application process. With students just pointing, clicking and applying, colleges are reaping in a new application tithe, leading Beres to postulate that, “it’s a cheap, money making scheme that homogenizes applicants and schools alike.” This rapid fire, mass spamming of applications is what he believes to be pauperizing the college application process. I recall myself searching for an answer acceptable for my Serbian community, especially for all the grandmas asking me every Sunday. Yet, I neglected to determine what I truly wanted to be. Years later, I started volunteering at St. Luke’s Medical Center in the summer of my sophomore year, and little did I know how transformative this experience would be. Initially, I came in as any high school student with the intent of earning volunteer hours for my school’s National Honor Society. I wanted to choose an undemanding job: flower desk. It was an adequate job, but certainly tedious. Consequently, I arrived to the conclusion that there must be a need for my aid elsewhere in this colossal hospital. A tremendous portion of my time as a volunteer, in the HBO Unit, is transporting patients throughout the hospital. Most of the patients who enter the HBO Unit are disabled with chronic wounds related to their uncontrolled diabetes; despite their poor quality of life and marginalized status in society, most of them are optimistic with bright spirits.
