To reach those decisions and work those problems out you are subconsciously using the scientific method. Apply the five steps of the Scientific Method to two situations that could occur in your everyday life. Use the scientific method in the first scenario provided below to solve the problem at hand. Please come up with a second detailed scenario on your own and follow the same steps in the scientific method to find a resolution. Scenario 1: You arrive home late at night. You walk up to the front door, unlock it, and reach in to turn on the light switch located just inside the front door. The light does not come on! Now what? 1. Although electric vehicles may seem like a great idea for many people, because they can eliminate a great amount of emission pollutants in the atmosphere, they arrive with many unresolved issues. Issues which may be expensive as well as incovineient to solve. The first article I read was “Chemstry’s Electric Oppurtunity” by Alex Scott. In his article, he spoke of the automobile firm Tesla and their new Model S vehicle. The Tesla Model S is a vehicle capable of driving up to 300 miles before needing to recharge, compared to the majority of other electric cars who can only reach 100 miles. The CEO of Tesla Motors, Elon R. Musk claims that “anything a gasoline based vehicle can do, the Model S can do” (Scott, pg 1). Which may prove to be true since the car goes from ‘0-60 in only 4.2’ (Scott, pg 1). Many people wonder how the Model S is capable of outperforming other electric vehicles. It is due to the car’s large 670kg battery. This battery provides an energy density of 240 Wh/Kg. ‘This is much denser than the nickel based batteries of other firms such as Toyota, Nissan, and GM’ (Scott, pg 2). Laptops are usually more expensive than desktops because that are a great deal smaller and still have many of the same components as a desktop. Because of the way they are designed, components have to fit into a small compact space, conserve power, and produce less heat. Repairs and maintenance will cost more because they usually require professional work in order to be fixed properly. The parts are also smaller for laptops, making them more expensive. The most obvious difference between laptops and desktops is size. This is also the main reason a person may choose to get a laptop. They are much smaller and lighter, which makes them easier to travel with. You can go anywhere, anytime, and still have access to a computer. There are lots of easy ways to make homemade batteries. Basically, any two different kinds of metal can be placed in a conducting solution and you get a battery. Familiar homemade batteries include sticking copper and zinc strips into a lemon or a potato to make a battery. One quick battery is made from a soda can, the soda from the can, and some copper. Click on image for a larger picture The photo above shows a battery made by placing a strip of copper and a strip of aluminum into a glass of Coca-Cola (I used the sugar-free cherry flavored variety because that's what I found in the refrigerator). You can make the aluminum strip by cutting open the can. You will need some sandpaper to sand off the paint and plastic coating from the aluminum before using it. Or you can get strips of aluminum already free of coatings from a hardware store, or from our catalog. You can get copper flashing from a hardware store and cut out a strip of it, or you can use a bunch of copper wire (the more surface area exposed to the liquid, the more electrical current is produced).
