Why I Am Not A Friend Analysis

In this essay, I argue that popular culture strongly portrays and greatly determines a person’s experiences with friendship. In recent years, the popularity of social media platforms, such as Facebook, have risen portraying a new form of communication for friends and strangers alike. To say that the growing age of social media has impacted popular culture would be an understatement. Traditionally, friendships have been formed off of face-to-face interaction, and with the steady rise of social networking, those types of connections seem to be few and far between. In the article, Why I Am Not a Friend, Mariam Thalos expressed her concerns on the topic saying that “…social networking might make a wide range of face-to-face interactions obsolete, …show more content…
People often look to the small screen to see fictional versions of their own lives mapped out for their viewing pleasure. Having said that, the friendships that are often portrayed on television shows, such as Seinfeld, accurately portray those of real people. Television is one of popular cultures biggest assets and can have a great impact on its viewers. The friendships formed in real life could either be mimicked by the characters on shows such as Seinfeld, or they can be influenced by the characters portrayed on Seinfeld. The viewers stay tuned into this program because they are able to see their friendships being reflected back to them by the characters’ quirky behaviors. Jennifer McMahon, author of Seinfeld, Subjectivity, and Sartre, claims that the characters in Seinfeld “…offer us useful insights about human nature, ourselves, or our times” and goes on to credit the show’s success to “…the fact that viewers can see a bit of themselves in the sitcom.” Even if a person’s own friendships aren’t similar to those on television, they’re still impacted by the behaviors being shown to them, and one might argue that they’re being conditioned to build a friendship as captivating as the ones they’re enjoying on screen. Television shows, being the pop culture monster that they are, carry a certain ability to either portray our lives and reflect them back to us or determine a template for us to …show more content…
Aristotle’s first form of friendship, the friendships of pleasure, are often seen in bonds made through social media networks such as Facebook. Friendships of pleasure are formed when people share a mutual enjoyment of a certain thing or activity. Facebook operates by encouraging users to input their own personal likes and allowing others to view them. This means anyone can notice a shared commonality between themselves and someone else and create a friendship based off of that mutual interest. The second form of friendship according to Aristotle, the friendships of utility, are formed when people can serve to one another’s own advantage. In the article, Why Can’t We Be Virtual Friends, Craig Condella claims that “…friendships of utility [are] more common as we age.” On the contrary to that argument, a friendship based on utility was popularized by two youths in the 1986 film Stand by Me. In the film, two of the main characters, Chris and Gordie, become friends who despite genuinely caring for each other, often use each other for their own benefits. The boys don’t necessarily share the same interests like those in a pleasurable friendship, rather they both shared a common need for a friend and a confidant. They used one another to further their success in school and to distract from their dysfunctional

...ANALYSIS: With those statements up there, I can say it matches me as around 95%. I’m going to summarize what I am like or not as a person with ENFP rate. I am a little bit crazy and cocky sometimes but I always know how to cope up and mingle with people in different ages. I like crazy new ideas and things but I love vintage or old fashioned things because they are interesting, amazing and stunning which made me different from others. Yes, I can easily persuade people especially those I just met and made them feel it was right but most of time it is right. I am warm towards others but I’m not that kind because I want people to know me as tough one so I pretend most of the time to be one but I can easily sympathize. Base on the result, I’m good keeping relationship but they should cooperate and go with my decision of being practical and yes, I’m like this and I just realized it by reading this. I am really friendly and I want them to be happy around me by telling stories but unlike in the result there, I don’t easily forget my old friends. I love being around them because I have a problem being alone because I feel depress and cry just an hour I’m alone and I think that is not normal lol. In terms of business, I agree with the result in all of it that I’m good at brainstorming and productive but it had to be an interesting topic because I can be easily distracted if it is not and I’m usually late. I do made decision but mostly they are objective if they needed to be and even I...

Introduction Personal development skill plays a significant role in individual’s life. Especially in current society, when studying and working environment become more competitive and tense. Additionally, employees in many big companies now have more power to contribute their ideas for decision making process (Charan, 1999). Therefore, it is very necessary for me to constantly develop my personal skills. As a student, there are many ways for me to enhance these skills such as: classrooms, clubs, student professional organizations, athletic teams, residence halls, the Clarion community, my home community, internship programs, summer jobs… (Humpfreys, 2004). However, just focusing on developing personal skills is not enough. Assessing and reviewing the development of each skill are also significant. In other words, I should have my own personal development plan which will help me to control my progress. The plan will help me review which achievement I have gained, as well as support me to set further goals for making continuous improvement in each skill area. In this paper, my personal development skill plan will be demonstrated. First, I will review own personal...

Conflict

...Friends are just friends because they really do come and go. That is what I learned is the last few months of high school. I am credible because I was part of an ego conflict with my friend, researched interpersonal conflicts in Beebe’s textbook, and wrote this analysis. The central idea is that friends need to communicate effectively with each other before a misunderstanding can quickly turn into a conflict resulting the ending of a long friendship. The following analysis will explain the type of conflict that occurred, the type of conflict management style that was used by both parties and the four conflict management skills that could have improved the conflict. The introduction has been discussed; it is now time to move forward with the type on conflict that occurred. As defined by Beebe, Beebe, & Ivy (2013), “Ego conflict is in which the original issue is ignored as partner attack each other’s self-esteem” (Pg. 225). On March of 2013, I had to miss about three weeks of school or so, due to an unfortunate event with my family. At the time, my best friend was carpooling to school with me. Since I am the type of person who keeps problems to herself, I sent my friend a brief text saying, ”Hey, I will not be able to give you a ride to school for the past month or so. I will be in and out, mostly out of school, for a while.” After, I sent the text; I never got a reply or text from her. For that period of time, I only came to school for about half an hour, once or twice a week...

Psychoanalytic Personality

...Merriam-Webster dictionary says that personality is the set of emotional qualities, ways of behaving, etc. that makes a person different from other people. 2. What are some key personality features that define you? There are a number of personality features that I could be used to define me. First, I would say warm, I am genuinely a happy, approachable, hospitable, thoughtful person. To that end I would also use self-less; I tend to always think of others before myself, and will give someone my last whatever if they were in need. I am brutally honest. I believe that this is a trait that I have that has been perceived by others as sarcasm. That is not the case, however, I am a person that is not afraid to say what other want to say. I would use the world resilient. As it pertains to me, I can bounce back from any situation (homelessness, incarceration, a debilitating accident) with grace and a real smile. I can make the best out of any situation. My most enduring trait is that I am nurturing…I tend to “take care” of everyone that I care about. When I love, I love to the core. My loyalty is not fleeting; if we are friends, we are friends. Even in disagreements, I will not turn my back on a friend. I am religious. I believe that God died on the cross for my sins, and on the...

Psy/250 Personality Reflection

...length. 1. How would you define personality? I define personality as the combination of characteristics that make you who you are and how you are defined. A personality is just as unique and individual as are the fingerprints we are born with, even though many people may share similar characteristics within their personality, Part of having personality that makes everyone unique is their mannerisms: making hand gestures when they are talking, the pitch and tone of their voice, how they make eye contact, and the words they say to describe something all play a part of having a personality. Another feature of having personality is how someone dresses. Wearing certain clothing, such as funny shirts or bright colored cloths, may show someone who is outgoing and not closed in with people. 2. What are some key personality features that define you? Key personality features that define me would be that I am humble as a person. Going through life experiences made me appreciate everything I have and live with what I got. I also have a lot of humor, which makes me approachable and sociable. Even though I am perceived as funny, I do take everything around me serious, as I am observant, independent, intelligent, persistent, and confident with 90% of everything I do. There are negative features about me as well, such as I am picky and at times I come off rude or impulsive because of how aware I am of want I want to achieve. 3. Personal Psychology

...Biological, Behaviorism , Cognitive, Humanistic, and Psycho-analysis. In this paper I am going to emphasize all these aspects. Each of these schools is a separate science, that is integral part of our lives. I was born and raised in Uzbekistan, which is in Central Asia. My family was mostly involved in academics, so my parents always had high marks in school and my grandmother was literally my personal teacher. She ran two schools all by herself. One was her college where she was the principal and a teacher and the other elementary school. Pretty impressive if I may say so, which leads me to the reason why my entire family is important to me. Everyone has had some sort of high level achievement which make them positive role models for me and possibly my children in the future. Biological psychology is based on genes, hormones and brain functions. As everyone knows, we all have hobbies in our childhood that we think might determine the type of job we might have in the future. My hobbies included martial arts, collecting action figures (got to love that era when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were a big hype!!), playing with electric train sets, and old school video games. Of course now, the amount of hobbies I have are greater than before, because I now do some web design, collect samurai swords and chat online with friends. However, the one hobby that was truly worthwhile was martial arts, because although it is actually a sport I treated it more like a hobby of mine. It was a good...
