There are many students who go into their first year of college wanting to be a healthcare professional. Most are pre-medicine, but there is a long list of other careers that can be pursued- such as dentistry, nursing, or physical therapy. Healthcare is extremely diverse, which makes it unsurprising how much this field actually influences our daily lives. Public health is an excellent example of how impactful a healthcare profession can be. Campus security poles might seem like a normalized safety precaution found on all university grounds, but it’s actually something that public health professionals have implanted. There are many areas on campus with little to no light. This can be scary for a student who is walking home alone from the library at two in the morning. Pressing the button on the pole is quicker than dialing 911, and they usually have cameras or loudspeakers installed. Although I have not personally used one of these emergency poles, it is a good safety measure to have for all college students. …show more content…
Even though I’ve been in South Dakota for a majority of my life, I still get sick from being outside in the cold. There are many steps I try to take to prevent myself from becoming ill. I felt a cold coming on today, so I attempted to stay as “bacteria-free” as I could. Bathrooms are dirty places, but there are many steps that public health officials have taken to make it as hygienic as possible. Toilet seat covers and hand dryers are two examples of this. When I was in Chicago this past summer for a music festival, there were restaurants that had automatic toilet seat covers that recycled itself every time someone new went into the stall. There were also automatic hand dryers, which is a much better alternative to paper

Philosophy of Nursing

...interpersonal relationships with her patients and their families. It is very important as a nurse to do what is right even when no one is watching. Also, a nurse promotes illness prevention and health maintenance for their patients, families and communities. I believe a nurse must be fully educated about every aspect of nursing and must continue their education throughout their career because things are always changing in the healthcare field. I believe that for a nurse to be able to provide optimal care, they must be fully educated about all the changes and newest technology in the healthcare field. A nurse needs to be able to work as a team with other nurses and with many other healthcare professionals such as physicians, physician’s assistants, nurse practitioners, ect. Overall my personal definition of a nurse is, someone who is caring, compassionate, and responsible that provides holistic and multidimensional care for individuals, families, and communities. Ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to become a Registered Nurse. Both of my grandmothers were Registered Nurses and when I was younger I was always so interested in what they did as nurses. They would tell me stories about what they did at work and I was so fascinated by them and wanted...

Why a College Education Is Important to Me

...Erin Green AC1305362  Achieving Academic Excellence Writing Assignment 5-Why a College Education is Important to me July 17, 2013 Why a College Education is Important to Me! Is the importance of a college education for a lifetime of knowledge, a career, or a directional map of the path for your life? A college education is all of these choices and then some. My choice to gain an education is for the establishment of a professional, personal, and financial foundation. My success also depends on this decision. Success is measured differently for each individual, but for me it’s measured by the opportunities afforded through receiving an education. In today’s economy, knowledge is not something I decided to have; I found it as being something that is essential to gain. According to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, between 1980 and 2005 “young adults with at least a bachelor’s degree consistently had higher median earnings than those with less education” (Kirstina). Obtaining knowledge through a college education is of utmost importance to me. I will be the first in my family to graduate college with degree of knowledge. Knowledge is so vast that there is no exact definition to define it. The definition of knowledge for me, is acquiring information and skills to prepare me for life’s obstacles. One of life’s greatest obstacles that knowledge renders you for, is success in a profession or trade. “The Bureau of Labor Statistics...

In today’s society, technology allows people to send, receive, and process large amounts of information from others each day. Effective communication is about more than just exchanging a text or email; it is also about comprehending the feeling behind the information. Effective communication can improve relationships within personal, work and social relationships by developing your connections to others and improving teamwork, decision-making, and problem solving. It allows a person to communicate undesirable or difficult messages without engagement or destroying ties from long-term relationships. Effective communication requires a set of skills such as nonverbal communication, attentive listening, managing emotions, and the ability to recognize and understand the emotions of your own and those of the person. Interpersonal relationships are important and are vital in the healthcare industry. Interpersonal relationships are " Of or relating to the interactions between individuals" (interpersonal, n.d.). I went through the General Studies program upon realizing that it would be better for me to rekindle my knowledge on liberal arts and science before pursuing a University of Phoenix program. As a woman, I know the value of competitive and in-depth learning especially at this period of globalization and economic uncertainties. Before entering the UOP, I was anxious on how to go by with the fast changing world and how to render an eclectic mix of marketing, business and ethics into working with patients with diverse needs and demands and demographics. At this period of uncertainty, it is highly recommended that I build first a foundation of knowledge concerning the art of doing business in the 21st century before entering UOP. I am a Patient Representative in the emergency room that is why education really plays a crucial role in my life not just for the improvement of my business but also for the betterment of my personal and career life. Healthcare professionals who have obtained cultural competency “are prepared to provide patient-centered care with a focus on the patient’s specific needs that are shaped by culture” (Black, 2014, p. 198). ...In this this report I am going to be talking about equality, diversity and rights in health and social care settings.   Equality  Oxford dictionary definition “The state of being equal, especially in status, rights or opportunities.” - 2014, Anonymous.   Equality is treating everybody the same despite the differences that they may have. It’s about giving everybody the same chances or choices and treating everybody equally as if there are no differences involved.   Why is equality important in society?  Equality is very important in society this is because if there was no equality, our society would be segregated into different groups. For example there could be a segregation based on gender and that women shouldn’t be allowed to work and they should stay at home whilst men work and earn the income for the household. Another reason why equality is important to society is if equality wasn’t legalised and the law didn’t protect people then hate crime and violence would increase and nothing would be done about it. For example if people were judged on their race or religion then this would cause a lot of conflict between different races and religions and this could escalate and become a bigger problem this could also lead to segregation. Also why equality is important in society is because everybody should feel that they are treated as an individual. This means that people want to be treated individually rather than as a group. For example they wouldn’t want to be treated as a...
