$3,000 dollars will not only make a significant impact on my life but my family as well. I go to school 2.5 hours away from home and that long distance is extremely hard on my mother because she takes care of my grandmother. When I was living at home, I was up early helping attend to what my grandmother and uncle needed in the morning, while my mother was coming home from working third shift from the nursing home. She would sleep and I would take care of anything needed, like cleaning the house, the laundry, and preparing and/or cooking meals. With me being away, my mother is doing extra now, while working 12 hours overnight shifts weekly. Not only that, she managing everything at her house as well instead of both of us doing the work. Measuring the Cost of Living

...Chapter 24 Measuring the Cost of Living Introduction 1931 – Year of Great Depression in the USA. But in spite of this fact some people contrived to earn $80 000, it was famous baseball player Babe Ruth. Even the President Herberd Hoover had a lesser salary of $75 000. When Ruth was asked if he thought it was right that his salary was higher than President’s he replied that he had a better year. Year of 2007 describes a different picture. The average baseball player gets paid $4.8 million. We consider the fact that the cost of living, products and services has grown in recent decades. But it does not give us any explanation if Babe Ruth had a better standard of living than the average baseball player now, because prices for goods and services were significantly lower than nowadays. The quantity of produced goods and services within the state shows the GDP. But how to measure the total cost of living? To answer this question we need to find out how to turn dollar into consumer price index (a relevant unit which measures the overall cost of goods and services purchased by a customer) to be able to compare cost of living over the time. Inflation – situation when total cost of goods and services increases. In this way expenditures of the average family increase in order to maintain the same standard of living. Inflation rate – changes in price level from the earlier terms in percentages. The better way to measure the inflation rate is to use the CPI (consumer price index)...

...ANSWERS 1. Do you think it was important for Michael to stipulate that he wanted a business that he would enjoy, that would give back to the community, that would grow and be more successful every year, and that would generate a net income of $25,000 annually? Why or why not? It's always important to set goals to measure the success of any business. However, the first three goals are more of a mission statement while the fourth is an objective for the company. The problem is there no plan and one objective. What is he going to do if the company doesn't net the $25,000? Or what if it nets the $25,000 but there is not enough cash to sustain the business? There need to be more objectives to make allowances for these types of situations. There needs to be a plan of action where goals change from period to period. Otherwise, the business cannot succeed. 2. If Michael has sales of $12,000 during January of his first year of business, determine the amount of variable and fixed costs associated with utilities and maintenance using the high-low method for each. Fundamentals of Accounting

...Wise people speak because they have something to say. Fools speak because they must say something." Don't predict the future, invent it. Davies, Tony & Crawford, Ian 2012, ‘Financial Accounting”, Pearson, Harlow. Pg 7 Prudence Concept Prudence means being careful or cautious. The prudence concept is an ethical concept that is based on the principle that revenue and profits are not anticipated, but are included in the income statement only when realized in the form of cash or other assets, the ultimate cash realization of which can be assessed with reasonable certainty. Provision must be made for all known liabilities and expenses, whether the amount of these is known with certainty or is a best estimate in the light of information available, and for losses arising from specific commitments rather than just guesses. Therefore, companies should record all losses as soon as they are known, but should record profits only when they have actually been achieved in cash or other assets. Consistency concept The consistency concept is an ethical rule that is based on the principle that there is uniformity of accounting treatment of like items within each accounting period and from one period to the next. However, as we will see in Chapter 3, judgement may be exercised as to the application of accounting rules to the preparation of financial statements. For example, a company may choose from a variety of methods to calculate the depreciation of its machinery and equipment,...

I am happy to discuss any of the practice questions in the tutorial or during my office hours. You can also get help from the Math and Stats Learning Centre (ER 3125). (1) You need to borrow $100, 000 to start your business. You can borrow from the bank at 10% interest and you can borrow from your life insurance policy at 12%. Your business plan budgets for $10, 100 in interest payments in the first year. How much do you borrow from the bank, and how much do you borrow from your life insurance? Solution. Step 1: Define the variables. Let B be the amount, in dollars, to be borrowed from the bank and let L be the amount, in dollars, to be borrowed from the life insurance policy. Step 2: Set up the mathematical problem. We have two equations. The first equation states that the total amount to be borrowed is $100, 000. That is, we must have B + L = 100, 000. The second equation states that the interest to be paid is $10, 100. That is, 0.1B + 0.12L = 10, 100. Together they give the following system of two equations in two variables. B + L = 100, 000 0.1B + 0.12L = 10, 100 (1) (2) Step 3: Solve the mathematical problem. We create the augmented matrix and reduce it. We have...

Hello

...Question 1 Jack Tar, CFO of Sheetbend & Halyard, Inc. opened the company confidential envelope. It contained the draft of a competitive bid for a contract to supply duffel canvas to the U.S. Navy. The cover memo from Sheetbend’s CEO asked Mr. Tar to review the bid before it was submitted. The bid and its supporting documents had been prepared by Sheetbend’s sales staff. It called for Sheetbend to supply 100,000 yards of duffel canvas per year for 5 years. The proposed selling price was fixed at $30 per yard. Mr. Tar was not usually involved in sales, but this bid was unusual in at least two respects. First, if accepted by the navy, it would commit Sheetbend to a fixed price, long-term contract. Second, producing the duffel canvas would require an investment of $1.5 million to purchase machinery and to refurbish Sheetbend’s plant in Pleasantboro, Maine. Mr. Tar set to work and by the end of the week had collected the following facts and assumptions: The plant in Pleasantboro had been built in the early 1900s and is now idle. The plant was fully depreciated on Sheetbend’s books, except for the purchase cost of the land (in 1947) of $10,000. Now that the land was valuable shorefront property, Mr. Tar thought the land and the idle plant could be sold, immediately or in the future, for $600,000. Refurbishing the plant would cost $500,000. This investment would be depreciated for tax purposes on the 10-year MACRS schedule. The new machinery would cost $1 million...

Continental Cariers Inc

...Continental Carriers, Inc case Continental Carriers, Inc. 1. Consider the EPS-EBIT chart. a. Why do the lines for the stock plan and the bond plan have different slopes? What’s the significance of this difference? Because the calculation of EPS is net income divided by outstanding shares, two lines for the stock plan and bond plan have different slope. The significant difference is that two variables are different on bond and stock plan. If we assume two plans have same EBIT, a net income shows different value on two plans due to the interest expense of bond, which is 5.0 million dollar in every year till maturity. Another compounding that used to calculate EPS is outstanding shares that also differ on two plans. On bond plan, outstanding shares would be 4.5 million whereas for stock plan is 7.5 million. b. Why are EPS equal under the two plans at an EBIT of $12.5 million? Which plan would produce the higher EPS at $10 million? At $15 million? Although the stock and bond plans have a same EPS at an EBIT of $12.5 million, equation is different. The equation is shown below: Bond plan: EPS=(Net income-Dividends on preffered stock)/(Average outstanding shares)=$4'500'000/4'500'00=$1.0 Stock plan:EPS= $7'500'000/7'500'000=$1.0 According to the graph and equation, If EBIT increases above $12.5 million, bond plan will produce higher EPS because increasing debt affects to increase leverage. If EBIT decrease below $12.5 million, stock plan will produce higher EPS. Exact...
