Why is Oral Health Important for Men? Men are less likely than women to take care of their physical health and, according to surveys and studies, their oral health is equally ignored. Good oral health recently has been linked with longevity. Yet, one of the most common factors associated with infrequent dental checkups is just being male. Men are less likely than women to seek preventive dental care and often neglect their oral health for years, visiting a dentist only when a problem arises. When it comes to oral health, statistics show that the average man brushes his teeth 1.9 times a day and will lose 5.4 teeth by age seventy-two. If he smokes, he can plan on losing twelve teeth by age seventy-two. Men are also more likely to develop oral and throat cancer and periodontal or gum disease (“Why Is Oral Health Important for Men,” 2010). According to Lara (2010), since maintaining a good oral health is vital, you must strive to observe the proper ways of oral hygiene (1). Aside from personal practices such as brushing, gargling, and using dental floss, it is advisable for you to visit your dentist every 6 months. Moreover, it is necessary that you should inform your dentist not only of your dental, but also your medical history or recent health problems. Your dentist is usually one of the first individuals to detect and diagnose a health problem and he can help you in identifying these diseases in their earliest phase. In conclusion, people are advised to practice good oral hygiene in order to avoid getting some diseases. According to Kenneth, the latest Surgeon General's report regarding oral hygiene, the quality of life of many Americans is often reduced due to oral health diseases and pain (1). The disturbing pain is usually caused by gum infections, which can also result to loss of more teeth. The study also said that seventy-five percent

...populations are most vulnerable, if the environment plays a role, and how the community either promotes prevention or worsens conditions. First, it is important to understand what this disease is, the etiology, transmission, how outside factors affect it, and ultimately, why men are more vulnerable than women. Emphysema, which is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), affects the respiratory system. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are the two diseases that fall under COPD (Demirjian, 2012, para. 1). The most common known cause of emphysema is from cigarette smoking due to the pollutants in tobacco. Studies show that while cigarette smoking is the major cause, other possible causes are air pollutants, chemical irritant exposure, chronic bronchitis, and genetics (Zelman, 2010, p.197). The pollutants in tobacco release chemicals from within the lungs that cause damage to the alveoli. As time passes, this continues to do more damage to the alveoli. The chemicals that cause the alveolar walls to break down also cause the lungs to lose elasticity which prevents them from inflating and deflating correctly. Since the lungs are not able to deflate as normal, they fill over time with carbon dioxide air (Zelman, 2010, p. 197). This affects the lungs ability to provide sufficient amounts of oxygenated blood to be pumped back into the body (Health Sciences, 2005, para. 1, 2). Genetics are also a cause because nonsmokers have been diagnosed with emphysema. People who are born with a genetic...

The Port Chicago 50: An Oral History

...Why would someone fight if he knows he is going to lose? Why would someone fight if he knows he is not going to make a change? Why would someone fight if he knows he is going to die in the fight? For black sailors during World War II, this fight was worth it. Courage under fire is what they didn’t need because they had more than enough. Courage under fire means having courage, no matter what. That is what Small and his squad had in the book The Port Chicago 50 by Steve Sheinkin and in the audio recording, “The Port Chicago 50: An Oral History.” These sources describe the events that happen before and after the explosion at Port Chicago. The book is a more effective source for showing the fight for African American’s rights that seemed that they couldn’t win. In the long run they were willing to fight even to the cost of their lives, but to be heroes or to free their...

[from Womanity, 1994] Device Failure One disadvantage of contraception is that the devices used to prevent pregnancy can sometimes fail either by manufacturer error or by the user not following the directions properly. For example, condoms can break if they are past their use dates or if user errors, such as using petroleum jelly as a lubricant or wearing two condoms at once, occur. The birth control pill becomes less effective when you miss a pill or do not take them as prescribed. Allergic Reaction Some forms of contraception can cause severe allergic reactions, making them dangerous for some consumers. For example, many condoms are made from rubber latex, which can cause swelling, rashes or even anaphylaxis when they come into contact with someone who is allergic to the material. To combat these reactions, condoms now are available...

Compare And Contrast Abortion And Contraceptives

...The Important Decision There is an issue in determining the differences and similarities between abortion and contraceptives. There are grave differences between contraceptives and abortion even though some people use abortion as a form of contraceptive. It has been over 30 years since the Roe v Wade decision granted women the constitutional right to choose whether or not to have an abortion (Planned Parenthood) and there is still a huge debate on whether it should be available or not. In order to pick a true side in this debate of abortion versus contraceptives we have to look at similarities and differences between the two based on why each are offered and the different types offered, the pro-choice/pro-life stance, and lastly the effects...

Low Testosterone in Male's

...When most people talk about testosterone they mostly associate it with the male sex organ, but it is so much more than that. Testosterone is a hormone that is made by your body and is responsible for several different functions. This hormone regulates the development and distribution of male hair, changes in body mass and strength, fat distribution, sex drive and sexual function, mood and energy levels, and last bone strength. According to the Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week journal (2012) “Low testosterone is the most common cause behind many age-related ailments faced by men of all ages.” (p. 900). Additionally, many chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, are linked to and associated with low testosterone levels in men. Men with low testosterone levels should seek medical treatment, because low testosterone impacts a man's entire body and can be destructive to his overall health. Testosterone is the male hormone that is responsible for the development and maintenance of the male sexual function. The physiological effect of testosterone impacts muscle mass and strength, bone density, metabolic function, mood and cognitive function (Tartavoulle & Porche, 2012). Low testosterone is caused by a decrease in testosterone production and is also referred to as testosterone deficiency, Hypogonadism, and commonly as “Low T”. According to Tartavoulle & Porche (2012), “A decrease in testosterone production is associated with Hypogonadism, a clinical syndrome...

It combines three books: this teachers’ guide, a student workbook and a collection of stories and photographs entitled Listen to My Story. We hope that together, they will inspire a high level of creativity in classrooms across Zambia. Civic Education is a key aspect of the school curriculum and one that prepares pupils for a productive and fulfulling life. The resource pack addresses issues of great concern to children and young people as they grow up in our society. A particular focus is gender and issues of inequality in Zambia. Many of the stories, photographs and activities enable boys and girls to reflect on the influences on their lives that shape their choices. English skills, literacy, and other elements of the curriculum are also supported and the sessions in the pack are designed to show how life and learning converge to change people’s futures. I hope that the many Zambian teachers and students who use this rich resource will benefit from the stories, and that the interactive and reflective activities will stimulate interest and learning in different local settings. Every child has the right to education. Yet in Zambia, as in many other countries around the world, millions of children, especially girls, are excluded from school. Conspiracy on Aids

...fully understood by the theories creators. On subject in particular that has been the subject to many of these often ridiculous accusations are ones about AIDS. Today, most people believe that HIV and AIDS originated in Africa. However, the reality is that no one really knows where the AIDS virus originated. Due to numerous counts of cases and other important factors of AIDS, there are many different possibilities that have been proposed regarding the derivation of the disease. For instance, the conspiracy theory that was first introduced to the people of the world was that AIDS was contracted by a monkey bite. But now we know it is impossible. Some people say that it wasn’t nature that created AIDS: it was the U.S Government. According to this conspiracy theory, the U.S Government made AIDS in effort to rule out homosexuals and black people because these two minority groups are two of the most disliked minority groups in America. Though the conspiracy theory, known as the AIDS/bio warfare theory, proposes some suspicious and persuasive arguments, there is no possible way that the U.S Government created HIV. First of all, it is important to know what HIV and AIDS are. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) causes acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. It is a Lentivirus, which means “slow virus” because it takes an extensive period of time before the side effects of a lentivirus are noticeable. Lentiviruses are a relatively common...
