Students, have you ever felt really tired in the morning and wish you were back in your warm comfortable bed, well I have. That is why I think that school start times should start later. The reasons why I think we should change the school start time is because of kids mental health, physical health, and for kids ability to stay awake during school or other activities. The first reason we should start school later is because of the kids' mental health. It shows that, “Sleep deprivation increases the likelihood teens will suffer myriad negative consequences, including an inability to concentrate, poor grades, drowsy-driving incidents, and anxiety.” This shows that there will be negative consequences for teenagers if they don’t get enough sleep. …show more content…
Not only are you getting enough sleep, but cigarettes make you more depressed and not focused. That's why you shouldn’t drink energy drinks and smoke because you will be healthy if you just make a schedule and go to sleep on time. Finally, it affects kids who have depression. Child Mind Institute says “In 2006, the National Sleep Foundation surveyed more than 1,600 adolescents and found that many exhibited depressive symptoms on a frequent, if not daily, basis. More than half (56%) said that they felt stressed out and anxious. Many reported feeling hopeless about the future.” This shows that more than half of kids are depressed by being sleep deprived. If we change the school start time later, it will help the future of our planet. The last reason is for kids to have the ability to stay awake during school or after-school activities. The first reason is that kids go home and nap and have no time for after school activities. In my survey it says that 69.2% of people sometimes take a nap after school or work. This means about 7 out of 10 people don’t do anything after school because they want to take a

Is This Your Contract

... We agree to something and we decide to put it on paper for how long no matter what comes up we stick to it. Now contract can be so testy we don’t know if we are breaching it or right on task. There are contract almost everywhere that we go, when we get a car, buy a house, even when you sign up for a credit card you are putting yourself in a contact. Now every time that you think about something that you want to get into a contract with, it's always smart to think research and make sure that what you are doing is great for you. For example people everyday get into a new car contract because they really need it. Now I have done this in the past but before we got into the contract I made sure that we were able to afford it. Now something that my wife does is takes all the information that we gathered from the car lot and made sure that it would fit in our budget. Now after a long talk we were able to come to the decision that we would take the car. But we wanted to make sure that this is something that really wanted to, I know that if we were not going to be able to afford it then we would be in more trouble for not having that ability to pay for it. Now we are really going to get into this car contract a little deeper and by that I mean we are going to see what is good and what is bad about all decision that will be made in the final hours of the contract. So we will skip past the months that you test drive, and research everything about the new vehicle that you want. And...

Smartphones at School

...If we are preparing our students for life after school, we should allow them to use the tools they will be using when they get there. How many jobs can you think of right now where a smart phone is not beneficial? Mechanics order parts on their phone, engineers view blueprints, doctors calculate dosages, and grocers check inventory. The list is endless. By the time our students enter their professions the need to utilize mobile technology will be even stronger. Not preparing our students for that world is negligent. Tests that are so lacking in rigor that students can look up answers on a phone or get them from another student are lousy and outdated in a world where information is free and easy. We need to get used to the fact that kids don't need to know "stuff" nearly as much as they need to learn to use that "stuff." Tests of recall don't prepare our students for the world ahead. Kids know this - it's why they think school is irrelevant. Kids working together to find solutions to problems (collaboration) should be encouraged, not labeled as "cheating." Policies that ban cell phones because students might text each other are short-sighted. As Kevin Honeycutt is fond of saying, "Students used to pass notes on paper. We never banned paper." 2-The smartphones also allowed pupils to access revision websites, log into the school email system, or transfer electronic files between school and home. The study by researchers at Nottingham University involved 331 pupils...

Social Security

...Sydney Sojka Ms. Williams English IV period 6 20 January 2016 Senior Research Analysis Proposal Social Security has been around since 1935, when Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. It is meant to provide financial aid to those of “old age” and the disabled. This is the topic I am going to be discussing because it is going to be affecting our generation by the time we could be receiving the benefits that are included with Social Security. I chose this topic because while I am paying for Social Security of others, it is on the path to be out of money by around 2035, which will mean that people ages 18-25 will not be receiving this. We are paying for older generations’ Social Security money, but we will not be getting any. The topic of Social Security is important because of how much it is being overlooked. Awareness needs to be raised because the funds will not be able to provide us with our benefits when we need them years from now. By writing this paper I will be able to further explain what is happening with our money and why we are in such a crisis with it. Not everyone is aware of what the government is really doing with the money being put into this fund because they are not always honest. This information gathered will be helping everyone including the people paying now, the people paying later, and everyone that should be receiving these benefits now and later on in their life. The problem with Social Security will be affecting everyone throughout the...

Why High School Should Start Later

...Jenah Cooney May 15, 2012 College English/Surinak Senior Research Paper Period 2 Wake Up Later and Your Grades Will Be Greater High school is a part of every teenager’s life whether they like it or not. Although it is not a requirement; most, if not all, teenagers will experience at least one year of high school. With the experience of high school, students will also go through waking up early sometimes at five or six a.m. The starting time of high schools has been highly debated for several years. Those who debate this topic usually dispute on whether or not changing the time would be beneficial. Psychologists estimate that as many as 30% of children may have a sleep disorder at some point during childhood. Sleep disorders have implications both for social-emotional adjustment and for school performance. For this reason it is important for both parents and educators to understand how sleep works and how disruptions in normal sleep patterns can affect children and teenagers. Starting school just a half an hour later would benefit the most families and students, and also to accommodate for teens' sleep needs. One of the main beneficial topics to argue for starting school later is attendance. Schools should start later because it is proven that students will have higher attendance. If students can get more sleep, they are more likely to attend school on a regular basis. Studies have shown that after puberty, teenagers require more sleep, around nine and a half...

Entrepreneurial Leadership

...Introduction This paper aim at analyzing the concept of entrepreneurial leadership .Before starting our analysis, two important concepts need to be addressed: Leadership and Entrepreneurship. Leadership is directing or inspiring people to attain organizational goals (Boone and Kurtz, 2011). An entrepreneur is a person who seeks a profitable opportunity and takes the necessary risks to set up and operate a business (Boone and Kurtz, 2011). In the past 15 years researchers have tried to merge those two concepts into one concept Entrepreneurial Leadership .The common point of those researchers is that most defined some of the main elements of what they taught entrepreneurial leadership meant (Tarabishy, 2003). According to the research result of Ayman Tarabishy (2003) entrepreneurial leadership is one of an enterprising, transformational leader who operates in a dynamic market that offers lucrative opportunities. Entrepreneurial leaders are usually risk takers, driven, and can recognize when change will give an advantage. Entrepreneur leaders are engine of innovation, renewal, and job creation (Verheul, 2007). Entrepreneur leaders apply their talent in different situations and have different entrepreneurial approaches. Thesis Statement: In analyzing the importance of leading entrepreneurs to determine their entrepreneurial approaches one of each of the following categories will be addressed: (1) profit oriented, (2) social responsibility oriented; 3) personal approach and...

Childhood Obesity

...the children of this generation are sitting on the couch being entertained from media devices. The American Medical Association states that, “One of the reasons American children and adolescent gain weight over the generation is that children expend significantly less energy than their parents and grandparents did at their age” (Green, G. Riley, Hargrove, C. pg. 915-920). The children of today do not have to leave their family room to find entertainment instead they stay in the house to watch television, play video games, and play on the computer. Doing these activities for hours and not getting the recommend sixty minutes per day is extremely unhealthy for the children of today and this is the major reason why so many children are obese. I will prove in this paper that childhood obesity is a growing epidemic because today’s youth are not staying active and playing outside however they are sitting on the couch using an entertainment media device. The Center of Diseases and Control states that, “Children eight through eighteen years of age spend an average of 7.5 hours a day using an entertainment media including television, computers, video games, cell phones, and movies” (CDC 2012 par.12). This shows the...

How Can We Fix Academically Failing Schools

...tests that were provided during the school year. The problem is that these schools are found all over the United States. What can be done? How can we fix these failing schools? Who is to blame? Most people would blame the teacher first and foremost, but I disagree. In this paper I will discuss what we can do to fix schools that are failing academically. I will argue that adding early childhood education classes, changing curriculum, and modifying standardized tests are all effective steps in correcting the problems that failing schools continually face. I will support my argument by using the views of authors such as Alfie Kohn and his ideas of making the curriculum more entertaining to make learning easier, Fred Lunenburg’s ideas that preschool is a critical point to achieve success later on in school, Sam Dillon’s views about how the No child left behind act has hurt more public schools than helped them, and other researchers as well. One step I feel that could help with fixing schools that are failing academically is by adding free early childhood education to public schools across the United States. Early child hood education could play a key role, because it gives parents and students an opportunity to start learning their basic skills at an early age in their lives. In New Zealand they have been offering early childhood classes since 1889, because many of the children were running around the streets while their parents were at away trying to make...

Education

...Strategies for Supporting Young Writer and English Language Learners Sandra Williams EDU675 Change Leadership for Differentiated Educational Environment Professor: Dr. Regina Miller June 3, 2010 Introduction Children who start preschool programs are identified as young learners. They enter a formal schooling with different levels of knowledge about writing. Many students are exposed to write daily by observing family members writing lists, typing sentences on the computer, or doing homework. Some students may know less about why or how others may write. However, regardless of their level of knowledge many young students benefit from having their own personal stories written down to share with other students’. Teachers demonstrate to students how each of their personal experiences and stories are valuable, and they can preserve their stories by writing. This paper will show two important strategies that can support young students’ writers through dictation and translating. Taking Dictation Most parents or adults take dictation when they listen to their children and will write down their child’s oral stories before the child can write on their own. Some of the benefits of dictation are well documented (Temple, 1993; Calkins, 1994; Tunks & Giles, 2007). Taking dictation when children are telling their story is crucial to introducing the student to the intention of writing and the functions of printed language. Through dictation students learn the general purpose...

Suicide

...Teen Suicide Research Paper People need to be informed on why teens commit suicide and what signs to look for. Teens are slowly slipping away because of this deadly subject and people need to start noticing. Sometimes people can get caught up in their own personal lives and not even notice when a loved one is considering suicide. In the seven articles read, there were a variety of things that people seem to overlook often. Why teens are committing suicide and what people can do to help victims who are considering, are two main points that are important for people to know. In a Kids Health article about teen suicide, it talks about teen suicide and different things people need to know about it.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year-olds. Most of the time, people don’t realize that they could have helped a victim because they didn’t know any of the warning signs. The article goes on to talk about the risks of suicide, that 60% of all suicide in America are used with a gun. This is why no one should ever have a gun unlocked or kept in a place where it is easily out of reach. In 1996, more teenagers and young adults died of suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic lung disease combined .In 1996, suicide was the second-leading cause of death among college students, the third-leading cause of death among those aged 15 to 24 years,...
