Why Take Online Courses

When deciding whether or not to take online courses, there are three important factors that must be considered; dedication, determination, and motivation. It can be difficult to balance life’s daily chores and because of this anyone considering online courses must be ready to make sacrifices. Life can always get in the way and you must be able to decide what is more important. Online courses require, at the minimum, a few hours each day without distraction. You must find something to keep yourself motivated; be it a promotion at work or simply having a diploma. Determination is a must in order to get the job done as it is very easy for things to fall apart. It can become extremely stressful balancing work, home, and school. It is also difficult to motivate yourself to “attend” school without a set schedule which is why a daily regimen must be establish and adhered to. Online courses aren’t necessarily easier than classroom courses; you get to wear pajamas but you lack direct contact with a professor or with someone else of experience. If you are not easily motivated or is a visual learner that requires direct contact with a professor, online courses may not be recommended. Online courses are recommended for dynamic learners who have the dedication, determination, and motivation to get the job done. There are many pros and cons for taking online courses. Here are just a few of the pros: not sitting in a classroom, not being late for class, reduced costs, and the ability to determine the hours. This allows for people to learn from remote location such as service men and it is great for people that travel a great deal because of work. It is also helpful for people that are introverts and still want to learn. Here are a few of the cons: difficulty obtaining professor assistance because of work hours that conflict with professor’s availability, no real interaction with professor or students, and evolving technology requires constant computer changes. In isolating one’s learning the value of the course can easily be reduced. For my first semester, I found myself motivated and ready to learn. I found further motivation in the costs as my company reimburses me for courses that I successfully complete. I thought that since the first was fairly easy that I would sign up for another but I was fooled. The second semester was a little harder and there were more courses to take. In order to stay motivated to complete courses that I had little interest in I had to remind myself that successful completion meant that I got reimbursed for the courses. Whatever it may be, everyone must really think about their motivation. As usually happens in life I was thrown a curve ball; my Mother became ill and she required constant care from me. I tried to continue with my courses but it was just not possible, I was forced to put them on hold. It is nice that you can extend course deadlines for six months for a nominal fee and it was extremely helpful in my time of need. Seven months later I can now focus on my studies again. I did find it a difficult struggle to start again and once again learn to balance a full time job, studies, and still providing a great deal of care to my mother. With a little hard work though, I’ve find that you can accomplish almost anything. Life is one big obstacle so one must be dedicated, stay motivated, and be determined to finish because when you do you find that all of the sacrifices you made were worth it.

Taking Online Classes

...October 31, 2012 Why Do Student Take Online Classes? Nowaday, Internet is very popular, and it seems to become an integral part of life. People can find more information, go shopping, or connect to everyone in the world. Beside that, Internet also helps people to study more convenience such as some online classes. In the modern age of technology, most of things are available online. Have you ever taken online classes? For many people, taking online classes is an easy way when they do not have time to step their foot into a classroom. I also took an online class at Golden West College, and I think online learning is very advantage. There are 3 factors that cause students should take online classes. The first cause of taking online classes is saving. The online classes would charge less expensive than the traditional school. Students do not need to pay for material fees as taking in classroom. Commonly, they would download all materials needed for their classes, including lectures, power point, assignments, and additional notes. When students have quiz or exam, they do anything online without materials from their professors. Moreover, they are able to reduce the waste of transportation. Students can do the assignments everywhere with their computer, they do not have to go in class. For example, if a student takes traditional class in the afternoon every Monday, he/she needs to pay for the material fees in class, take attendance on time, and consider about the distance that he/she...

Arleen R Bejerano Analysis

...Online courses do not deliver the same experiences and opportunities that regular college provides. This text talks about why face to face learning is more beneficial than online learning. The author of this text is Arleen R. Bejerano and this is an argumentative article. Online courses deliver most of the class content through the internet. They are also time flexible, but online courses aren’t as beneficial as they sound. Consider the fact that online courses physically distance students from the college community. They are separated from their teachers and their peers. They also don’t have the resources that are available to students on campus. Students that learn on campus ground face to face will have an...

Adults as well as K-12 students are utilizing online courses to complete their education. With anything in life, there are pros and cons to consider especially when it comes to replacing traditional education with an online education. In the future, changes could be implemented to create a structure for all institutions to follow for a greater increase in online educational course offerings. In 1989, the University of Phoenix opened its virtual doors to what is called “distance learning”. This for-profit institution along with a multitude of other for-profit institutions have millions of students that take courses for a variety of reasons. For those who are taking online courses, some might say that the human interaction of taking a traditional course is better than utilizing online courses. If that is the case, then why has online learning increased significantly over the past decade? “About 30 percent of American college students take at least one course online, says Elaine Allen, statistical director of the Sloan Survey on Online Education, which monitors student involvement in online higher education”. (Burnsed, 1) In an article by Duglass Rushcoff, he states that even though students are taking courses to simply enrich their lives, “it would be a mistake to conclude that online courses fulfill the same role in a person's life as a college education, just as...

Studying Online

...“The Noisy Learner” Studying online has its own advantages. Students can choose to study at their convenient time.Others, not very good at expressing themselves in crowded traditional classrooms, may find it easier to express their ideas online. To study online, being a “Noisy Learner” seems to be an option. Well ,let’s first find out why is it nescessary to be one. Online classes very are different from traditional on campus ones. In traditional classes, students can hear eachothers voice and see eachothers face expression.Online classes don’t have none of the above and here students mainly rely on discussion board posts, chat room dialogs and emails.Communication is the key here.Without active and creative communication, the chances of successfully finishing the course might be put at risk. Being a “Noisy Learner”would certainly help and I would take the following step to begin with: First, I would follow the “netiquette” rules by respecting others views and presenting my views in a way that does not offend others. These are just the basics rules for online surfing. Secondly, I would regularly check the discussion board posts, chat room dialogs and emails. This way, I would be up to date with everything going on in class. I would also take my time getting to know my classmates and lecturers. Knowing everyone's personality and cultural backgrounds would help a lot in general. I would also exchange ideas with my peers and never be shy asking...

Problems with Online Edu

...1,2013 The Problem with Online Education Esteemed Communication Department heads of the University Missouri Saint Louis (UMSL) I would like to first congratulate you on your ranking of fifth place in the Journal of Communication for scholarly productivity among all universities offering communication degrees (including M.A. and Ph.D.). This ranking conveys to people that the UMSL Communication Department employs the best staff for inspiring communication majors with a curriculum that highlights the key elements of what it means to communicate effectively with people in different social situations. But, I would like to ask something that has baffled me since becoming a communications major. Why do communication majors take online classes? Most communication classes are only offered online and the ones that aren’t online are usually held in time slots that do not mesh together with a students schedule thus you have to take online classes to keep on track. Now I must point out that online classes are a new innovative method of learning with education but wouldn’t a communication major benefit more from learning their craft in a environment conducive to their major. Online classes are great in a theoretical sense you can learn at any time and practically anything. But in communications extra steps need to be made in order to fully grasp the concept of the subject. For example one of the key courses that every communication major has to take is Intercultural Communication...

Why Online School

...Why I chose WGU for my degree? WGU employs a competency-based model where a student may earn college credits based on their knowledge, work experience and skills. In order to speed up your preparation for each course, you would typically take a pre-assessment test of a specified domain of competency, based on the result of which your mentor would work with you to create a study strategy to prepare you for your final test. This way you would save precious time by not having to study through the entire course but just focus on areas of weakness. For subjects like Project Management and Quantitative analysis, which I felt I was well versed with, given my current job experience and math skills, I decided to directly take the pre-assessments for each course. After doing really well at these 2 pre-assessments, I did a quick review of the material and completed and passed these 2 exams totaling 9 credits in under a month. Based on your competency levels, you could achieve higher number of credits in a given 6-month term. You can also have qualifying credits for professional certifications transferred at WGU thus reducing courses to complete, and hence the time to graduate. WGU’s tuition payment cycle is based on a “6-month term” where you pay flat fee per term. Within a term, you are allowed to take any number of courses that you can realistically accomplish in that time frame. This means depending your abilities and time for study, you can complete additional courses and attain your...

Why an Online Education

...Why an Online Education In Sabri G. Bebawi’s article, “Definition of Online Education as Distance Learning”, an Online Education is defined as; the creation and proliferation of the personal computer, the globalization of ideas, and other human acts, and the use of technology in exchanging ideas and providing access to more people. After referencing five articles on Online Education/Distance Learning, Being able to earn a degree at a college, out-of-state or abroad, allows many people the opportunity they never had, or was just not able to afford too. From my experience on taking online classes while in the military, I have been able to take them while deployed overseas in support for our country. I will provide in this essay evidence that distance learning is an invaluable tool, and it has a big impact on today’s education. Three out of the five articles I referenced had three similar subjects: convenience and flexibility, student enrichment, and cost-effectiveness. Taking a closer look into the convenience and flexibility of an online education, I find that all three articles speak on the flexibility to create one’s own schedule. With online training, there are no class schedules to adhere to. Online training gives people who work the flexibility to schedule their own learning time (Howard 2013). Courseware can be accessible for students when they need it. Students can review lectures, discussions, explanations, and comments (WorldWideLearn.com). Students may be able to...

Final Draft of Discusion Board

...Abstract When attending college as an on line student it is highly imperative that integrity be impressed upon each student. Technology as well as other students who have taken the course before can easily be used to cheat in order to receive a better grade. "This paper examines the nature of on line academic dishonesty and strategies to lessen incidences based on proven practices. It does not address general best practices of assessment, many of which are applicable to both face-to-face and on line environments, particularly those regarding objective assessments."(McGee P., 2008) Online learning can be a positive experience allowing you to learn on your own time while still living a full time life whether with your children or a work environment. There have clearly been rules set up and ways to catch dishonesty in school systems. So why would one chance it? If you spend your entire college life cheating then it stands to reason you will have to cheat your way through whatever career you decide upon. ACADEMIC HONESTY 3 "While academic honesty is a priority for all educational environments, it is particularly of concern in courses offered at a distance where students work independently and with less direct monitoring of their actions by an instructor."(McGee P., 2008) Having academic honesty is not just so...
