I choose to sit in on the meetings being held by a Fire Department Stationed in Garland NC. I was given the privilege to do so by Fire Chief Brandon Easton. The fire department holds its meeting every Wednesday at 7:00pm. I choose this group to research due to my interest in community service and firefighting. In the first meeting I attended I was introduced by Mayor Anthony Johnson. I was given the opportunity to shake hands with all the members. While doing so Mr. Johnson explained to everyone that I would be attended the next few scheduled meetings, so that I may be able to increase my knowledge on the processes of decision making in groups.

Members:

Member (1) Brandon/Caucasian Male: Brandon is 46yrs old, very active in the community. His attitude is some what laid back. (Chief Fireman)

Member (2) James/African American Male: James is 29yrs old, very positive and outgoing shows feeling and emotions. (Firefighter)

Member (3) Haywood/African American Male: Haywood is 52yrs old. The Veteran of the group. He has good leadership skills, a member of the town board of commissioners for 11yrs.

Member (4) Ricky/Caucasian Male: Ricky is 51yrs and is the head of the town Treasury. He is a very responsible and focused member of the group.

Member (5) Anthony/Caucasian Male: 48yrs old; Anthony has been the mayor of the town for the past 6 years. He is very outgoing, generous and works hard to satisfy the needs of the town.

After I had been introduced, the meeting proceeded to the group’s first debate topic. Ricky announced the topic was of an old fire truck. (See Appendix A) The fire truck was nearly 14 years old and needed several new parts in order to be dependable. Mr. Haywood was curious to know just what parts needed to be replaced. James stated that Hydraulic Pump, Clutch and Rack and Pinion all needed to be replaced. Everyone in the group shared their thoughts and opinions on the situation. After briefly discussing it for a while, Mayor decided for the group to meet again next Sunday at 7:00pm and for Mr. James to bring in at list of prices for the new parts. He also asked that the other members of the group to be thinking of other solutions. At meeting (2) Mayor Anthony started out by asking Mr. James was he able to present to the members the list and the prices of the new parts needed. (See Appendix A) Mr. James presented the list and the prices using very effective communications skills. He explained to the members that the exact price of the new parts depended on the condition of the old parts and whether or not they would be considered for a core charge if returned the store. Chief Brandon then asked the group was their any other suggestion or solutions to help fix this problem. (See Appendix A) The group briefly discussed solutions and then calmly came to a Consensus that the best thing to do is to buy the new parts. I noticed during the discussions that James, Haywood and Brandon seem to persuade and highly recommend that the board vote to buy the new parts over any other solutions. The really brought the energy and determination to meeting tonight. Every opinion and solution presented was noted and copied down by Mr. Anthony. The meeting came to an end by Mayor Anthony stating that at the next meeting we would discuss the overall price of the parts and labor along with Fire Department Spending Budget. He asked that Mr. Ricky bring the information needed and to be ready to present it. At meeting (3) all that was asked was presented, Mr. Ricky wasted no time discussion the Fire Department Spending Budget. After all the facts were presented, Mr. Haywood then asked James to announce the overall price of the parts and labor. The price of parts and labor to fix the fire truck were just under the fire department budget. The Mayor then stated that the decision to buy new parts and to fix the truck would be put into action as soon as possible. In conclusion I would like to state that from my observation the group showed great communication skills. The group verbalized and communicated issues without having to try and out talk anyone or try to dominate the conversation. They also showed great group critical thinking skills, especially when deciding whether or not to fix the truck. From this observation I have learned that people from all different ages and professions can work together to be a successful group. (See Appendix C)

Winning

...In a competition, winning is the most important thing or it can be the only thing people want to achieve according to Henry Sanders. Thus, it is not surprising that many people put all of their efforts and time to compete for glorious victory. Sriram and Jacob Williamson, two competitors from a spelling contest, changed multiple perspectives toward winning and competition through their performances on the stage. They proved that competition is not only about winning but also about improving and trying your best to win. Competition is always good because it makes people do their best. Everyone wants to be honored and cheered as the winner. Their hunger for the sweet taste of victory becomes their own motivation. Many people take it very serious to win the competition. On the other hand, there are some who want to learn from the others and test their own knowledge or ability to solve problems through the competition. Sriram, after winning the spelling bee championship, stated that he only competed against the dictionary but not to win. His endless motivation to improve is much more valuable than the glorious victory that many people desire to have. Sriram shows that competition is not at the end even when he stepped onto the highest podium. The reason Sriram performed very well in the spelling bee is because he came to the competition regardless of the outcome. Therefore, he was able to release the pressure of winning, which is a major problem many competitors have. Sriram was...

...ALLERGY TESTING Perennial allergies result from airborne substances that are present all-year-round such as house dust. This causes congestion, an itchy nose that may also run, and itchy mouth and throat. House dust may contain mould and fungal spores, fibres of fabric, animal dander, dust mites, and bits of insects. Cockroach particles are often the cause of allergic reactions. Because more time is spent indoors during cold times of the year, allergic reactions are likely to be more severe in the winter. Perennial allergies usually cause allergic rhinitis symptoms but rarely allergic conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis may develop due to substances being introduced into the eye, such as eye drops or cream used to treat eye disorders, cosmetics such as eyeliner, mascara or face powder, and hair dye. The cleaning solutions used to clean contact lenses may cause reactions.   Antihistamines are given to relieve the symptoms, but the person may have to take them 12 months of the year.   Anaphylactic shock is the most extreme form of reaction and it can be fatal in not treated medically immediately. Anaphylaxis develops suddenly, the face, lips, tongue and airways start to swell, cutting off respiration. Anxiety, tightness in the chest and difficulty breathing are also present. Blood vessels begin to dilate (widen) causing a severe drop in blood pressure, this may lead to unconsciousness and shock.   What to do if a client, or someone near you, suffers an allergic reaction: ...

Winning the Lottery

...Winning the Lottery Winning or earning a substantial amount of money shouldn't only be used in luxury or having a high lifestyle. In the downfall of our long lasting recession that has lasted quite a while, really ought to be thought about considerably. I would choose to share it, as much as possible. So, for the lottery to even exist could be life changing to many people if anyone ever won. ever won. So, should we play the lottery? Should you be able to make a difference? Also, is the lottery really a dream come true? This is my take on what I could do and what should be done if I or someone should win the lottery. First of all, should we play the lottery? Money literally does grow on trees, but not exactly the way we wish it to. My mother used to obsess about the lottery spending tons of money on tickets. So, when I was real little I used to tell my mother all the time that when I grow up, I'm going to win the lottery and I'm going to buy a ton of homes like Jennifer Anniston. If she could do it, then so could I. As I grew older and watched my mother spend so much money on the lottery it somewhat changed what I thought about the lottery. I felt so terrible all the time because she would go into depression from spending all her money and couldn't figure out how to pay the bills. I've asked her “what are you going to buy if you ever win?” When asked, she could never think of one thing, but of course pay off her bills. I always told her; “if you didn't spend as much money...

The Winning Kick

...The Winning Kick In football, many games come down to the last wire to where many kickers seem to succeed while many others often fail. Kickers seem to fail under various amounts of pressure due to crowd noise, not good with pressure, or cannot seem to do their job so their team can count on them at in point throughout the season. But in this game, my team and I would not take failing or losing as an option. Waking up to my alarm sounding at early morning I really don’t feel like getting up as I try to sleep in as long as I can. With my dad calling my name from downstairs and constantly calling me on my cell phone, I finally awake my lazy self to get in the shower. As I get ready that morning excitement of a Friday rushes through my blood because it is the end of the day for school, and it is also the first football game of my senior year. I look in the mirror and think to myself how I would play that night but little did I know that it would be up to me to make the game count or not. Walking down the stairs, mom is yelling at me saying, “Bubba!! What do you want for breakfast?” My normal morning breakfast would usually consist of nothing as I never really motivate myself to eat breakfast. Going through my binder for school my family is constantly asking me questions about the day and if I have finished all of my homework the night before and if I’m ready for the game tonight and so on. As I’m rushed to leave out of the house because I am usually running late due to...

Winning the War for Talent

...Winning the War for Talent Tanya Iyer Winning the War for Talent The following paper gives you a few ways or strategies of organizations that want to attract, recruit and retain good talent. Major multinational corporations in the world are using the strategies mentioned in the paper successfully. There is also statistical data and empirically testable data to support this. In this day and age good talent is really difficult to find. In employment markets characterized by high competition, obtaining suitable human resources becomes increasingly problematic as the number of applicants per vacancy declines (Wilden, Gudergan, & Lings, 2010). There is so much competition and talent is rare. But how do you know which is the best for your company? More over once a company or a firm acquires the correct talent to retain this talent within the firm or company is becoming even more difficult nowadays. This constant struggle has turned into a fight. This fight is called the ‘war for talent’. Steven Hankin of Mckinsey & Company in 1997 coined the term war for talent (J.L.H.D, 2012). There are a few strategies that people or companies use to attract, recruit and retain talent in their firms. One of these strategies is ‘employer branding’. Employer branding is defined as the benefits of an organization that potential employees associate the organization with (Wilden, Gudergan, & Lings, 2010). With proper employer branding an organization can promote itself in such ways...

Winning Book Review

...Review of Winning by Jack Welch When former General Electric CEO Jack Welch reflected on the thousands of questions he has been asked over the years, he realized they could be summed up by one question, “What does it take to win” (Welch Pg.3). Welch believes when companies win, everybody wins and the world is a better place. In his book, Winning, Welch attempts to answer the question of what it takes to win. He uses his experience at General Electric, the experiences of close friends and other corporate examples to provide a detailed roadmap for creating the foundation and corporate culture required to obtain a competitive advantage and win. Welch outlines and details three central pillars to his winning formula: strong management philosophy, effective management, and a focus on competitive advantage. This review will discuss each of these three pillars and their key elements. Welch’s first pillar to winning is management philosophy. A company’s management philosophy forms the foundation of the company and is based on four principles: strong mission and resolute values, candor, voice and dignity and differentiation. The management philosophy and four principles are critical to the goal of winning as they are a recurring theme throughout the other two pillars. According to Welch, in order for a company to determine where it can profitably compete within an industry it needs a strong mission and resolute values. In defining a company’s mission and values, Welch cautions...
