“Without You, There is No Us: My Time with the Sons of North Korea’s Elite” shares the story of a college teacher, Suki Kim, going to teach at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. She had no freedom while in North Korea, she was always under surveillance and could never voice her opinions. North Korea is known for being isolated from the rest of the world, they are locked in. No one has a complete understanding of what it happening in North Korea, except the citizens who live there. Suki wrote to book to enlighten people around the world what it’s like in North Korea.. Suki moved to America when she was 13, she has always been obsessed with North Korea and how the worked. Suki says she’s, “intoxicated by this unknown and unknowable place.” (PAGE NUMBER) She went to North Korea during Kim Jong-il’s reign, there would only be 6 months before he died. Suki said, “The nationalism that had been instilled in them (North Koreans) for so many generations had produced a citizenry whose ego was so fragile that they refused to acknowledge the rest of the world.” (Suki) While in North Korea, she experienced the way the lived and it was nothing like she expected. She couldn’t talk about he life outside of the Country, she had no right to talk about the way things are in America. Her students often compared themselves to other countries, saying they are the best; but none of them have even left the country. Suki wanted to protect these boys from North Korea, “I feel a greater obligation, both as a writer and as a person deeply concerned about the future of Korea, to tell the stark truth about the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea), in the hopes that the lives of average North Koreans, including my beloved students, will one day improve.” (Suki
