Chapter 3
1. What qualities might Jim possess that would make him a successful project manager?

Jim Watanabe has already established and introduced his project initiation team. As he is attempting to have Carmen Sanchez, the manager of Petrie’s Electronic’s top store in Irvine, join his team, Jim seemingly intends to establish a relationship with customers through Carmen. Also, Jim’s excitement about the project and his determination to begin the project by arriving early, demonstrates his dedication to complete this project successfully.

2. How do you think Jim should respond to Ella’s implied pressure about the importance of the project to her?

I believe Jim should confirm with Ella the importance of this project to him is, as well, and ensure that he and his team will do their best to complete the project as best and as successful as they possibly can. Jim should also reassure Ella that he will keep her posted on the status of each phase of the project and update her with any issues or concerns that may require her attention.

3. What strategies might Jim employ to deal with a very busy team member such as Carmen Sanchez?

Jim should utilize project management software, such as Microsoft Project, to manage the project in its entirety, including assigning tasks to each team member that tailors to their skill set and schedule, such in the case of Carmen Sanchez having a busy schedule. For example, during the process of dividing the project into manageable tasks by creating the project’s work breakdown structure, it may be ideal for Jim to assign Carmen on tasks that do not pose a strict deadline, given her busy schedule.

When responding to question 3, focus solely on the Enron case. Questions 1. What did Arthur Andersen contribute to the Enron disaster? I found an article in Time Magazine that discusses the fact that Andersen employees followed instructions from Enron executives to destroy documents. Wikipedia also mentions complex business models and unethical practices, including a modified balance sheet so that it portrayed a more favorable depiction of its performance. 3. What was the prime motivation behind the decisions of Arthur Andersen’s audit partners on the Enron, WorldCom, Waste Management, and Sunbeam audits: the public interest or something else? Cite examples that reveal this motivation. It sure seems to me that at least in the Enron case, if Andersen’s employees destroyed documents as discussed, they were certainly not acting in the interest of the public. Actions like that could only be meant to help the company interest in attempting to avoid prosecution. Much less the possibility that financial documents were potentially modified to hide the real transaction histories. 4. Why should an auditor make decisions...
