DISPERSION * (also called variability, scatter, or spread) denotes how stretched or squeezed * Contrasted with location or central tendency and together they are the most used properties of distributions. * A quantifiable variation of measurements of differing members of a population.
Common examples of measures of statistical dispersion: * variance * standard deviation * interquartile range
Measures of statistical dispersion * A measure of statistical dispersion is a nonnegative real number that is zero if all the data are the same and increases as the data become more diverse.
If the measurements are in metres or seconds, so is the measure of dispersion. Such measures of dispersion include: * Standard deviation * Interquartile range * Range * Mean difference * Median absolute deviation * Average deviation * Distance standard deviation

Range * Is the simple measure of dispersion, which is defined as the difference between the largest value and the smallest value. Mathematically, the absolute and the relative measure of range can be written as the following:
R=L – S

Where R= Range. L= largest value, S= smallest value
Quartile deviation * This is a measure of dispersion. In this method, the difference between the upper quartile and lower quartile is taken is called the interquartile range. Symbolically it is as follows:

Mean deviation * Mean deviation is a measure of dispersion, which is known as the average deviation. Mean deviation can be computed from the mean or median. Mean deviation is the arithmetic deviation of different items of central tendency. It may be the mean or the median. Symbolically, mean deviation is defined as the following:

Where M= median, = mean
Standard deviation * In the measure of dispersion, the standard deviation method is the most widely used

Media Analysis - Eat Drink Man Woman

...world-weary, throat-cutting, miserable bastards we've all had to become disappears, when we're confronted with something as simple as a plate of food” (Bourdain, A, 2000). From the viewpoint of communication studies, food has been, and remains to be, a significant representation in our foundation of meaning. Food, as an everyday necessity of social life, is an important aspect to study as it expresses current social studies through distinct relationships of class, education, gender, and sexuality. In addition, the customs of sharing foods and meals have been key in communicative practices in cultures all over the world. In the following paragraphs, the Taiwanese feature film Eat Drink Man Woman, managed and written by well-known director Ang Lee, who also successfully directed movies such as Brokeback Mountain and Hulk, will be analyzed to see how food is constructed and represented in the movie. In the film it is stated by character Jia-Chien that they “communicate by eating” (Lee, A, 1994). This is important because it displays that food is a form of expression and communication, a form that is commonly misunderstood or avoided. The film Eat Drink Man Woman, articulates communication family and loved ones by representing food as a symbol of the presented themes of relationships, displayed through illustrations of love and admiration. According to PBS, “There is no closer relationship than kin, and food plays a large part in defining family roles, rules, and traditions” (PBS...

...Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon CHIN 1088 12/15/2015 Fang 1 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Let’s look back to the title of this essay. Yes, it is the very film’s name that I would like to talk about. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was released in China in 2000, and directed by Ang Lee. Pasan Ko Ang Daigdig

...Pasan Ko Ang Daigdig depicts the life of a poor girl who undergoes several hardships throughout her life and suddenly receives an opportunity to become a professional singer and improve her family’s life. Viewers may come up with one of two insights from watching the movie. First, one may be led to thinking that despite severe suffering and despair, there will always be a happy ending. For this person, the movie seems to reinforce the rags-to-riches archetype. Forget all problems at present; everything will turn out well in the end. “Mapalad ang mga inaapi.” Lupe, portrayed by Sharon Cuneta, has to endure different problems happening all at the same time – “working” as a beggar, living with a mother who doesn’t seem to have any faith in her, being visited by her abusive uncle almost everyday, demanding that they give him money for gambling, even getting impregnated by a man she doesn’t know. Her luck begins to turn around, however, when her talent for singing is discovered at a local singing contest. Things begin to go well for her, despite a few problems with her uncle and the death of her mother, and she ends up engaged to a wealthy man who also happens to offer her a record deal. At the end of the movie, of course, she chooses the man she loves and the father of her child, and they live a fortunate life, thanks to her singing career. Personally, I think that this perspective can be quite problematic, especially when one actually incorporates it in his/her everyday life...

Then I realized that its been 25 years since we graduated from high school. 25 years, silver anniversary, an exact time to have a reunion. After all, we haven't had a single reunion since we graduated from high school. I was excited of the idea of having a reunion but something in my mind is pulling me back. Can we do it? Do we have enough resources? Can we get the total cooperation of everybody? After hours of contemplating, I decided to give it a try. I posted in my facebook status something like " Guys,may idea ako, what if mag reunion tayo?" I was surprised how social media works, the idea spread rapidly and the responses are mostly positive and so encouraging. It seemed that reunion is in the offing. I was so excited that day, old memories filled my mind and I felt like a teenager again. The idea of meeting some of my friends again after 25 years is simply overwhelming that I kept thinking about it all day. Then, reality struck back. Tambak pa pala ang gagawin kong designs. So, I returned back to work but this time, I did all of it minus the stress and smiling to myself. With...
