In the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio, the perspectives of August’s friends, Jack Will and Summer, help the reader understand his struggles through life at Beecher Prep. When Jack says: “I thought that he’d be behind everyone because he hadn’t been to school before. But in most things he’s way ahead of me”, (Palacio 142) he realizes that August will not be struggling academically throughout the school year. Jack feels that he misjudged August because even though he has deformities, they do not make him a mindless oaf. Moreover, August experiences further ridicule due to his past homeschooling.
