“Russian opposition politician Boris Nemstov brutally murdered near Kremlin”, “French cartoonist Charlie Hebdo and 12 others murdered in Paris office”, “ISIS burns Jordanian pilot alive”. These were the screaming headlines in leading newspapers around the world recently. Such acts of violence seem a regular occurrence nowadays. Will there ever be peace on earth? Why is the world we live in such a violent place? In 15 years’ time, I will no longer be young. One change I would like to see taking place is for the world to be more peaceful. Other changes I would be eager to see is a greener environment with more sustainable practices as well as the eradication of poverty.
Is World peace an illusion? Or can it be achieved one fine day? There seems to be conflict everywhere. Everybody is fighting over something and everything. Iraq invaded Kuwait for their oil in 1990. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. All these large-scale conflicts have a high death toll and the impact is disastrous. Hopefully, in 15 years’ time, countries can settle the disputes between them peacefully, without any need for aggression. Can we ever stop this attitude of getting “an eye for an eye”? If this practice goes on, we run the risk of the making the whole world blind, because fighting will only bring harm upon many around us. I feel that if people or countries are so competitive and calculative, going to war over just a small conflict, it will make our world miserable. In wars where soldiers and civilians die, there can be no victor. Even if a country wins a war, it can only do so with the lives of its precious soldiers and at times, even civilians. Its economy will suffer as the resources spent to fight could have been put to more productive use like the construction of infrastructure or healthcare. If only the whole world can co-operate and work together, sharing their resources and lending a helping hand to countries with a weaker economy, the world will become a much better place to live in, and the cold and depressing headlines of war and destruction will be replaced with more heart-warming articles. So instead of the constant blast of our Asian countries squabbling over the Spratly islands in the South China Sea, wouldn’t it be more pleasant to read a headline along the lines of “China, Japan, Vietnam, Phillipines and Malaysia come to an agreement to jointly develop the Spratlys” or “Arab-Israeli conflict comes to an end”. May there be peace on earth. It may sound wishful, but that’s what I would like to see.
Another change I would like to see is for the world to turn greener. Global warming is increasing rapidly and organisms that cannot withstand the heat will die. Global warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons CFCs, and other pollutants. One and a half acres of forest is cut down every second. Just think- by the time you finish reading this essay, 450 acres of forest might have been destroyed. We depend on trees for oxygen. If we cut down forests at such a rapid rate, this will result in an imbalance where the carbon dioxide level will increase and we will be fighting for oxygen. It is said that there are more than 121 natural remedies in the rainforest which can be used as medicine. The cure to cancer might be hidden in the depths of the dense rainforest that we had just cut down. Furthermore, deforestation leads to global warming, which results in many fascinating creatures, some yet to be discovered, being pushed to extinction or the brink of extinction. Imagine, in 15 years’ time, we can only rely on books and pictures to illustrate to our children what a common bird like a pigeon looks like, and what a tree is. I dread the thought of the how many other birds might go the way of the dodo in 15 years’ time, their population completely wiped out due to man’s destruction on the environment. Together, we can all work to improve the state of this world by playing our part in keeping the environment clean and green, because every little bit counts. I would like to see a green environment with the condition of the ozone layer improving, with everybody taking a more active role in recycling. Perhaps we could have more greenery along the roads and more parks to create a fresher, cleaner and greener environment, instead of the current situation where forests are being chopped down at a drastic rate. Also, the recent finding of shale gas in the United States has increased the supply of carbon fuel. However, carbon fuel is limited in supply and we will run out of it one day. Renewable energy like solar, wind and hydro energy on the other hand will never run out and will not destroy the ozone layer. I hope to see further development in these areas.
Last but not least, I hope that 15 years in the future, the situation of world poverty will be eradicated. Poverty is the state of condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support. Current statistics show that almost half of the world, over 3 billion people- live on less than $2.50 a day. Almost 2 in 3 people lack access to clean water. My heart shatters to smithereens knowing that practically all the children in sub-Saharan Africa go to bed every night with empty stomachs. In fact this point is in a way related to my second one about green environment. If a small-scale farmer in Indonesia living below the poverty line struggles to feed his family, would he be concerned about his slash and burn method of land clearing affecting the ozone layer? Hopefully, the rich-poor divide can be lessened and wealthier individuals or corporations can help to make a difference. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one such organisation that has the noble aims of enhancing healthcare and reducing extreme poverty globally. It is set up by Bill Gates the founder of Microsoft and his wife, Melinda, and also benefits from patronage of his ultra-wealthy friend Warren Buffett who gave generously in support. “There are some men who lift the age they inhabit, till all men walk on higher ground in that lifetime” by Maxwell Anderson. We need more wealthy people with such noble aspirations to help to improve the current situation of world poverty.
In a nutshell, I hope that in the distant future, I will be fortunate enough to witness the above positive changes taking place in our world - world peace, a greener environment and eradication of poverty. It will make the world we live in a much nicer and warmer place and also leave a beautiful place free of pollution and a warm community for the generations to come.

World Peace

...World Peace Day The International Day of Peace also known as Peace Day is celebrated on September 21 each year to recognize the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote peace. On Peace Day, people around the world take part in various activities and organize events centered on the theme “peace”. Events vary from private gatherings to public concerts and forums involving large audiences. Peace, as we all know, is very a important matter in our daily lives and it is essential to our overall well-being. However, this is something that has, regrettably been avoided for many years. It has been hindered by war, conflicts and disagreements throughout human history, which has left our world in a disgraceful emotional and physical state. This should not be the case. Peace has many benefits if we give it a chance, and it is a far more favorable option than conflicts. Imagine all the positive developments we could make if we were to have lasting peace throughout the ages! It might be hard, but we must all learn to do it. It is our responsibility as educators to promote peace within our school. There are many ways to promote peace in the classroom that aren’t too abstract. Although it is important to touch on this subject, peace education does not have to just include the prevention of war. It can start in the classroom, by simple acts of kindness, or care of the environment and others around us. The word “peace” means something different to everyone, there...

Peace in World

...Coach Company Analysis Recommendation: Sell Coach The current recessionary environment has had a strong negative impact on individual income levels, consumer spending and consumer credit availability. As a producer of high priced luxury goods Coach stands to suffer from the state of the economy as conspicuous consumption is frowned upon and consumer frugality is in fashion. These are factors that significantly impact Coach’s financial outlook as the company has experienced declines in both same store sales as well as earnings from fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2009. Coach’s gross margins are also shrinking as the company has had to increasingly rely upon its factory outlet stores to sell its products[1]. This also presents the problem of brand dilution. From a valuation perspective Coach’s P/E ratio, currently at 18.23, is well above the apparel industry average of 3.26, which suggests that from a relative valuation perspective the company may be overpriced[2]. Furthermore, the DCF analysis indicates an intrinsic value of approximately $35.00 while the current share price is $38.27 (3/11/10 close). Based on this quantitative data the stock is currently overpriced and has very little upward potential within our investment horizon. The stock’s price has increased over 200% in the past year and has been fluctuating between $34.00 and $37.00 since October (please see Appendix 1). The alpha from this stock was fully extracted in 2009 and the Coach holdings have run their course...

Building Civilian Capacity by Armed Forces of Bangladesh for Peace Building Missions in United Nations

...BUILDING CIVILIAN CAPACITY BY ARMED FORCES OF BANGLADESH FOR PEACE BUILDING MISSIONS IN UNITED NATIONS 1. Bangladesh stepped into the family of 'Blue-Helmet' through participation in UNIIMOG (Iraq-Iran) in 1988 with 15 Military Observers from Bangladesh Army. Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Air Force joined UNPKO in 1993 while Bangladesh Police joined in 1989. Till now Bangladesh has contributed in 54 UN peacekeeping missions in 39 countries, where 1,13,169 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have participated of which 1,02,794 are from the Armed Forces. At present with strength of 9,111 peacekeepers (7,197 from the Armed Forces), Bangladesh is the highest peacekeepers contributing country in the world. Being the largest troops and police contributing country for UN peace keeping missions, Bangladesh holds a large UN experienced work force. The experience of such a large work force can be utilized effectively in peace building role even after they retire from the government service. 2. Peace building in countries emerging from conflict is a huge, complex undertaking as it happens in an insecure, politically fragile and therefore challenging environment. There is always a challenge to match the crucial response time with the availability of experienced civilian workforce to be deployed for peace building missions. In this respect UN has rightly focused on building civilian capacity in members states. Creating a national database as a tool of human resource system is surely a need of...

Strategic Culture-Bangladesh Perspective

...DEFINING THE STRATEGIC CULTURE: BANGLADESH PERSPECTIVE Intro 1. A nation exists to lead the way of better living. Strategic Culture (SC) of a nation generates strength that shows the path of prosperity. It is the attitude of a nation in conduct with the others. A nation, big or small, offers many positive attitudes and conducts which are admired, nurtured and cherished by others. It is good for any nation to have the SC articulated, even more imp is to prac and fol them appr. 2. In search of prosperity and accomplishment, nations maintain rich SC. The good, the bad and the odds of the society usually come out from it. If the internal environment of a country is good and if there is maturity in politics, the SC becomes sustainable. While if the internal environment of the country ebbs and flows, the SC shows up accordingly. Born in 1971, BD is yet to define its SC. It has something to offer and many things to be derived from the others. From that perspective, this paper will first define the subj, then disc the SC of a small nation. Then the paper will try to accumulate the SC that BD demo so far and suggest some cultures to be articulated. Aim 3. The aim of this paper is to articulate the SC for Bangladesh. Definition of SC 4. ...Maria Wright Module 1 Assign 2 Peace According to the Webster’s dictionary, peace means "freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility." The definition that I can relate to most and appears to be most appealing is, “the occurrence of harmony characterized by the lack of violence." This definition explains best what we as individuals might mean when we say, all we want is peace, or an occurrence of harmony in our lives. Before this assignment, I always thought of peace in terms of war around the world and the lack of peace amongst countries fighting each other. I thought of it as the absence of fighting at home. I never knew how big the Peace Movement was. I did not realize it was a "movement", I just thought that people came to accept that we did not live in a world that could come to consensus as to what peace looks like. I recall a time where I called a co-worker oriental because it was what I was taught to call people of Asian descent. She got very insulted and called me all sorts of names. For me it was a common terminology used by everyone I knew, but on the contrary it was a stereotypical name and offensive to my Korean friend who stops speaking to me for months, as I did not feel I had to apologize because I did not know. One word caused high tensions in an office where we worked in every close quarter. One word caused such a huge disturbance of the peace we once knew. In his speech at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation's 7th Annual Frank K. Kelly Lecture...

Building Peace In America

...Eleanor Roosevelt once said " It isn't enough to talk about peace, one must believe it. And it isn't enough to believe in it, one must work for it." In other words, this quote defines the meaning that we, all the people should not only speak about peace or put full faith in it but instead we must undertake and effectuate it. Every day I see around me leaders from the world are getting together, talking, passing resolutions for peace. United Nation is constantly speaking about changing the world with peace. America has strongly built peace in our hearts and minds so we envision a future full of tranquility. Every time I watch the news, there's not a single day that goes by without saying anybody has been killed or hurt. When I wake up everyday I have this little tiny sparkle of hope saying" today is going to be a better day." But how can our world get better if we don't bring peace to our hearts and mind? What does building peace in our hearts and mind actually mean?...

Quotes From The Quintessential Hippie Of The 60's

...Imagine your ideal world. It may include ending poverty, hunger, or discrimination. This utopia may differ from person to person, but most will also include an element of world peace. Technically, peace is a state in which there is no war or fighting. When I think of peace, I think of the stereotypical flower children of the 60’s and 70’s nonviolently protesting the Vietnam War and spreading lyrics of love and harmony through mellow music. Though a focus on world peace is something we usually associate with past times, I believe peace is still a relevant theme in our modern society and will continue to be forever. A quote from the quintessential hippie of the 60’s, John Lennon, perfectly summarizes how our society should view peace today: “If someone thinks that peace and love are just a cliche that must have been left behind in the 60’s, that's a problem. Peace and love are eternal.”...

It’s hard to reclaim peace without a sense of community. 3. Take an adventure to neighborhoods of your town or country that are ethnically focused to appreciate diverse cultures. Cross-cultural understanding is key to building peace. 4. Travel to learn. Get first-hand experience in how things happen in other places and bring home questions about how you do things at home. 5. Drive with patience and tolerance. Keep the peace on our streets and highways. 6. Listen more. Really listen, without giving unsolicited advice. Peace and Justice

...Global Peace and Justice Begins at Home. Wars are everywhere. Wars define destruction. Not only does it destroy the Earth and whatnot but what a lot of us, naive people do not realise is that it also destroys the pure innocent minds of the little, chaste children. Many of us people misunderstand the concept of opening the minds of the kids to wars. The main reason why we do so is to make sure that the kids would not start any wars and let the peace on Earth sustain. Without realising the consequences, the erroneous thing that people do now is to open the minds of these children to the basic ways of starting a war. Global peace is a personal choice, hour by hour. Ask yourself, "Am I going to add to the fighting in the world? Or offer up something greater?" If you want to obtain peace, then start changing the world by changing the ways you teach these children. They are supposed to be playing hopscotch, filling in colouring books, having pets, playing hide and seek. What happened to that? I no longer see kids doing these things. Based on what I see on the Internet, parents are starting to neglect their responsibilities and instead of teaching their children good things, they are literally teaching them stuff like how to use a gun and how to use army knives. Despite the fact that these kids are still too small to be carrying out these type of activities, they are also too gullible to barely even think about the ramification of learning these stuff. Parents who train their...

Emmerging Role of Un in the Management of Future Conflicts

...EMMERGING ROLE OF UN IN THE MANAGEMENT OF FUTURE CONFLICTS INTRODUCTION Since the end of cold war, the world has been in a constant flux of changes, resulting into serious security risks. These risks range from border disputes to ethno-religious conflicts, most of which are likely to cause regional and global destabilization. In today’s unipolar world no single or group of states has the capacity to counter balance by themselves and therefore, the world is looking more towards United Nations (UN) for establishing World peace. The Collective power to shape the future is greater now than ever before. The world needs a new vision that can mobilize people everywhere to achieve higher levels of cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The foundation of UN some fifty five years ago was an expression by world leaders towards a new world wherein the international behavior and governance was about to begin. The domination of power blocks and less respect for use of UN forum for vested interest has curved the UN role. The potentialities of international organization led by UN are immense in this regard though not utilized to its full potential. At this new millenium every ones expectations are of more peaceful world order. But the natures of conflicts in future days are likely to be more diverse and complicated to be handled by UN. The causes of these conflicts will be mainly of race for nuclear power, global militarization, prolong economic sanction on...

Is Global Civil Society an Answer to War?

...Essay Title: Is Global Civil Society an answer to War? Introduction War is not a modern phenomenon but as old as human existence itself. Wars are not like natural calamities or phenomenon but are very much part of human existential dynamics that seeks both peace and ability to survive acknowledging its natural competitive behaviour which unlike realist assumptions is conditioned and not natural. However, realism has dominated the field of international relations since the end of World War 11. It dominates political thinking, with exclusive emphasis on the state as the primary actor in world politics. Realists display a very overt pessimistic view of human nature, advocating with religious conviction that selfish human nature drives international relations into conflicts subjugating state to resort to organized violence and wars in order to gain upper hand and to always resort to wars to resolve international conflicts. Thus resulting in a system framed to maximize state’s military power in a predominantly anarchical environment. As a distinct school of thought, Realism emphasizes separation from domestic to international with little or no democratic structures within its sphere. Consequently, warfare has remained an institutionalized social order against the predatory behavior of others and consequently a legitimate instrument of survival. Moreover, growth in the size of armies and the development of weapons technology has led to an increase in the frequency of wars resulting...

Peace

...HOW PEACE MAY PREVAIL IN MY OWN PERSPECTIVE’’ DOCUMENTATION PRESENTED BY EZEJI GODWIN IKECHUKWU FROM DEPARTMENT OF GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARTS IN PEACE STUDIES AND DIPLOMACY AT SIAM UNIVERSITY ON 24TH SEP. 2011 = UN PEACE DAY. Fellow citizens of the world, lets make the world a better place for you and for me, for this is and should continue to be the cardinal reason for our coming together. Society is formed when people as social animals, live in group. The person that exercises the state power is known as government. The government issues rules and laws and regulations to govern the realm as well as relationship with other nations, bilaterally and multilaterally. economic, social and religious interest are factors that affects the making of these laws, rules and regulation and its interpretation and implementation locally and internationally which often results to conflict and war hence there comes need to proffer solution for peaceful coexistence in this world we have found ourselves. Peace can be said to be an ideal freedom and happiness within all people and nations. It is a state of non-violence either voluntarily or by virtue of a system of governance that prevents warfare. Peace therefore means cessation of all sorts of hostility by all persons and nations. In certain cases, world peace has been seen and argued as unattainable because human by nature is violent hence rationally men choose to be violent. It remains also a proven fact that human being can change even...

The Quiet Door

...Raechel Huizinga Mr. Dempsey ENG 2D April 4, 2014 The Quiet Door One of the hardest tasks to accomplish in life is obtaining a sense of peace. In a disordered world that circles with fear and confusion, it is difficult to find. The concept faced and feared by all is the idea of death. It is not the act of dying that humankind desires to avoid, but the unknown beyond it. It is obvious through culture how the world fears death; movies, literature, and general behavior prove it. However, there are few who contradict the idea that death is dark and forbidding. In a poem called ‘Death is a Door,’ the author, Nancy Byrd Turner, writes, “Death is only a quiet door / in an old wall” (11-12). Some believe that death can be approached peacefully, rather than unwillingly. In the poem ‘Let Evening Come,’ Jane Kenyon uses various poetic devices, such as imagery, repetition, and symbolism, to create a peaceful mood. The peace the reader feels while reading the poem is the peace that can be adopted when crossing the threshold into death. Imagery is one of the most important literary devices a writer could use. Imagery allows the reader to become a part of the story and to interact with characters. Without imagery, there is no picture or setting, only empty words and actions that cannot be understood. The mood of a piece of writing can be created using imagery. In ‘Let Evening Come,’ Kenyon instills a peaceful mood by creating peaceful, comforting images in the reader’s mind. “Let the cricket...
