Remember those writing contests your English teachers told you all about? Oh, wait...those weren’t introduced at the middle school level, were they? Well, writing contests can be a great way to share writing, and, like many others at Saint Joseph High, perhaps something can be won.

See, at St. Joe last year, we broke a record. Not surprising, right? The number of student-won Scholastic Writing Awards was at an all-time high. With a total of 73 individual awards and 4 senior portfolio awards--38 Honorable Mentions, 33 Silver Keys, and 4 Gold Keys--St. Joe has surpassed itself yet again.

“Last year, I know that we could not fit the names [of the Scholastic award winners] on one poster, and previously we had been able to do that.” said Mrs. Bean Klusendorf, the teacher of two College Writing classes and both of the Honors English 9 classes, “So yes, I’m quite certain that we had the most that we’ve ever had at St. Joe.” …show more content…
Kaley Gresham received an honorable mention, Hannah Moore won an Honorable Mention and a silver key, and Sayle Owen also received an Honorable Mention. Talk about a confidence booster--even freshmen can get in on the action.

Now, don’t feel pressured to just enter all the writing pieces you’ve ever done. It can just be something you’re proud of--it doesn't even need to be something that was written for school. It can be anything. Don’t enter something scorned.

“Write what you want to write about. If you decide to enter something that you didn’t enjoy writing, then the judges probably won’t [either].” said Kaley Gresham,

Robotics Personal Statement

...Following an email conversation with Dr. Madhava Krishna (Head, Robotics Research Centre, IIIT-H), I spent ten weeks as an intern at the RRC, designing navigation architectures for an unconventional breed of robots that use FPGAs for brains. My second brush with research came in the form of HER2 Scoring Contest (University of Warwick, UK). After spending the summer automating an integral step in breast cancer diagnosis, my team and I went on to win that competition and (co-)author two journal papers, submitted to Cytometry Part A and IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. After an eventful summer, I opted for a thesis project in core robotics. With Dr. Guha and Dr. Krishnaswamy’s help, I am stretching my “research muscles” by attempting to train a hyper-redundant robot to navigate environments using reinforcement learning...

Through my research of my mother’s medical issues, I have found that medicine is one of the few fields where you are constantly learning more and that there are new disorders and diseases constantly being discovered. As someone who is passionate about learning and discovering new information, I like that the topic of medicine seems limitless. Between my interest in biological science and the human body, desire to be in a field with personal interaction where I can always learn more and the applicability of medicine, I feel that I am driven to make a difference in the world of medicine, and thus am planning to pursue the field. ...Computers: Grading By JOHN MARKOFF Published: April 4, 2013 Imagine taking a college exam, and, instead of handing in a blue book and getting a grade from a professor a few weeks later, clicking the “send” button when you are done and receiving a grade back instantly, your essay scored by a software program. And then, instead of being done with that exam, imagine that the system would immediately let you rewrite the test to try to improve your grade. EdX, the nonprofit enterprise founded by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to offer courses on the Internet, has just introduced such a system and will make its automated software available free on the Web to any institution that wants to use it. The software uses artificial intelligence to grade student essays and short written answers, freeing professors for other tasks. The new service will bring the educational consortium into a growing conflict over the role of automation in education. Although automated grading systems for multiple-choice and true-false tests are now widespread, the use of artificial intelligence technology to grade essay answers has not yet received widespread endorsement by educators and has many critics. Anant Agarwal, an electrical engineer who is president of EdX, predicted that the instant-grading software would be a useful pedagogical tool, enabling students to take tests and write essays over and over and improve the quality of their answers. He said the technology would offer...

Power Bases

...Group Dynamics Writing Assignment 5 Power Bases 07/27/12 Mitt Romney started out as a Republican front runner in the 2012 presidential race. Winning Maine and Nevada early, he fell to Rick Santorum in Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota. Don’t let the fact that Mitt Romney won past CPAC Straw Polls, which are much more a beauty contest then the 3 caucuses last week that Santorum clobbered Romney in, with the Romney campaign referring to a couple of them as beauty contests themselves. With Romney’s money, busing in tons of college students and picking up the tab for their attendance AND STRAW POLL vote, and that is exactly what he did. Even Santorum jumped in on that and commented that he doesn’t rig straw polls. According to the article I read, Will Romney’s ‘Good Enough’ Strategy be Good Enough for Voters? By Chris Stirewalt, Published February 15, 2012, at FoxNews.com, Romney and his Super-PAC can defeat Santorum in the Republican race because Romney has a stronger hold in the Republican base. They trust him more and feel he is the strongest of the candidates thus far. However, he has a problem with flip-flopping on the issues and is seen by many of his Republican base as a weak candidate. Nevertheless, if you are a Republican, the vibes are very bad. Mitt Romney has shown a discouraging inability to appeal to the party’s base, while the race has damaged both Romney and the party. Newt Gingrich, in particular, sacrificed the party to his own ego by launching left-wing attacks...
