Intro

With Country Music’s rise in popularity, it is important to note some of the most relevant changes in the music being produced in the genre. This industry is relatively new to the music scene and only began in the 1920s. Since its debut in the music world, Country Music has changed throughout the decades and evolved into what is now known as, “Sixth Generation” Country Music. The most noted difference, becoming more apparent as the genre has progressed, is the themes in the music. Country Music is most famous for telling stories of faith, patriotism, love, sorrow, and of the common workingman. However, the genre is seeing a change in the recent music being produced. It is becoming apparent that lyricists are moving away from the traditional themes of Country Music and introducing its new style, called, “Bro-Country.” This style is defined as contatining lyrics about pretty girls, trucks, beer, alcohol that leads to sex, and scantly dressed women.

According to Neff, “…objectification, was the main form of sexism in country music.”

According to Rogers, “Most people would assume that country is less sexist or has the least detrimental type of sexism within its lyrical content. However, one might also argue that it is more dangerous when sexism is buried within the lyrics. People might think this is “quality” music on the surface and really take the lyrics seriously. The idea that this is wholesome music is really what makes it necessary to study the underlying sexism that exists within it.”

According to Evans, “Overall, it would seem a significant cultural shift has occurred in country music somewhere during the first decade of the 2000s: references to sex, references to substance use (and particularly alcohol consumption) and – not coincidentally – references to drinking in connection to sex all experienced a jump between the years 1999-2003 and 2004-2008. The influence of whatever led to this spike is still being felt, as sex and alcohol references continue to climb into 2009-2013, and possibly beyond. These changes may be emblematic of a larger shift occurring in country music, as country acts fight to maintain their relevance and expand into the mainstream pop/rock market.”

Method
In order to study my hypothesis, I will be looking at country music billboard charts from the past ten years. I will be examining the top ten songs from 20052010 and the top ten songs from 20102015. In total, I will be listening, reading and watching a total of 20 country music songs. However, I will only be looking at male country artists. Within those songs, I will be looking for what women are called, how they are spoken about, and what they are dressed like. To be more specific, when I speak about what women are being called. Some words I will look for is if the women are being called “baby,” “girl,” “blonde,” “pretty girl,” “she,” or the women will not even have a name at all. Next, I will look at how they are spoken about. I will be looking for females being objectified in the activities that are represented in the lyrics. I will beb looking for lyrics that depict women as men’s property, dancing sexually, and acting in a manner that is overtly sexual. What I mean by this is that I will look at lyrics that show that women are only good to, “drive around with,” “dance with,” “clean,” “sit in the front seat of a car.” Also, I will that sugar shaker,” “just cutting it up,” “shaking that money maker.” Lastly, I will exam how they are dressed in the songs. For example, I will highlight phrases such as, “cut off jeans,” bikinis,” “flipflops,” “daisy dukes,” “short skirts,” “tight jeans,” and “painted on jeans.” Not only will I be reading and listening to the lyrics, I will be watching the music videos too. I will be noting how the women are dressed and what they are doing in the videos. I will be looking to see if they are dressed in lowcut shirts, tight jeans, short shorts, short skirts, and no shirt/no pants. Next, I will be watching to see what the women are doing in the video. I will be looking to see if they are dancing provocatively, engaging in sexual activity, and drinking heavily.
Lastly, I will compare the music from 20052010 to 20102015. I will be looking to see if the music these last 5 years is more degrading towards women than in the past. Like I stated, my hypothesis is that women are being discriminated against more in the 20102015 time frame than in the 20052010 years.

Charecter Anaylsis

...In The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls, Liz is an exceptionally intelligent and independent child for someone her age, of only fifteen years old. Because of her extreme responsibility and compassion for those around her, she is a great role model for Bean, her little sister. Other than being a role model, Liz's main purpose is to serve as the maternal figure for Bean since their birth mother leaves for weeks at a time, and is not around to support them. Liz shows her role by always taking care of Bean when their mom decides to leave. To begin, Liz achieved her maternal role to Bean, by getting a job of her own, "Liz had been doing some babysitting, but after Mom had been gone a week, she decided to take on extra work, and I got a job delivering Grit, a newspaper with useful stories..." (Walls 15). Liz knows that if she is not independent and got a job then there was no way that her and Bean could survive without their mother. Also it was her idea to leave for Byler so that the bandersnatchers, which is the girls word for the police, would not be able to take them away to Child Protective Services. Liz always knew what to do in these kind of situations, as we are told by Bean, which makes Liz very dependable. Also, Liz is remarkably intelligent, which we know because she is always complimented by teachers, parents and other adults about how outstanding she is. But not only is Liz considered to be smart in school, or "book smart", she also knows how to deal with the...

Grandpa

...This is because that’s where he loved to be. I’d walk into the bowling alley; it would be loud, with the mix of music and peoples laughter. I’d look down by the lanes to see if he was there, and if he wasn’t, I’d keep walking. It felt like there were hundreds of people around. Finally, I would find him, by one of the lanes. As I’d sit down, I’d smell the corn dogs and french-fries coming from the concession stand. Every now and then you could hear the balls hitting the lanes, then the knocking of the pins going down. I remember watching him bowl, in my mind he was the best one there. He had the perfect form, he’d release the ball and his thumb would come up to his ear, and I would say the words that he says to me when he taught me the form, “yah, just like that kiddo, make sure you take that thumb to your ear, slide it over the top of that ear, swipe your hair back, and say, I’m a cool kid!” The ball would hit the lane, knock the pins down, and then I’d hear everybody around him cheering for his strike. He’d turn around, you’d hear the smack from high fives, and then he’d look up at me with a big smile that stretched from one ear to the other. A cowboy hat is always what he wore. Underneath the cowboy hat, he was bald on the top and had little fuzzy looking white hair around the side of his hair. His face had wrinkles. He always wore glasses, but he had very...

Ppalli.” I mumbled something to myself as I caught a final glimpse on my window. Why do we even have to leave this house? The weather’s so good it’s a shame for me for not being able to enjoy it. Sigh. Screw this moving-somewhere-else idea. It would be fun skiing - without falling on the water of course – while watching girls clad in bikinis. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a pervert. Well, somehow. But this is not about me. It’s about this moving-somewhere-else thingy. It’s really getting on my nerve. “Yah, Oh Mija!” Arrgh. Titanic

..."Jack, I’m cold” said Rose. Jack said, “It’s ok Rose just hold on just a bit longer, a boat is bound to come back.” Ok Jack I trust you” said Rose. Just then Jack thought of an idea. He said “Rose, stay here I’ll be right back,” and he started swimming to dead bodies, and every time he got to a dead body he took the life jacket from them. He also took an oar that someone had abandoned. Pretty soon Jack had five life jackets and an oar and he swam back to Rose. He gave Rose the oar and said, “Okay Rose, “I have some life jackets, I’m going to put them under the door so we can both get on but I’m going to need a part of your dress.” Okay, Jack,” said Rose, and she tore off a piece of her dress and gave it to Jack. He took the dress and started to tie the life jackets together. He put them underneath the door and secured them to the handles of the door. He said, “Rose, the door should be stable. I need you to hang on to the door while I get on.” “Okay,” said Rose.” Rose grabbed the handles on both sides of the door and Jack got on. Jack started to push the door with the oar. He saw a dead man and took his life jacket. He put the life jacket on and started to push the door away from the wreckage to try to get to a boat. “Rose,” he exclaimed! “I see two boats; they are coming back!” He started to yell trying to call the boats over. Someone in the boat shouted “Survivors, on that door!” Rose had fainted, so Jack rigorously shook her to try and wake her, but it was no use. He took...

Personal Narrative

...in my room. The crickets chirped and sang in the dark. I hoped that my first day at Woodchester middle school wouldn’t suck like new year's did. I walked out of the lunch line to see a large sea of students laughing and chatting with friends. At my old school, people were always wanting to be the first person to become friends with the new person, but not here. Here, there was no one. I could hear conversations from across the room. “What did you do this weekend?”, “oh nothing much just got my hair and nails done and the local salon.” “The test was super easy, I did it in five minutes!” So far, this school had made no good impressions on me yet, just bad ones. I walked outside to see a small nerdy kid next to a large jockey kid. “Hey, you yah you get over here!” the jockey one roared. He walked over to the kid, grabbed him by the neck and dragged him away inside. I walked to a nearby tree thinking about what just happened. I sat down and began to write in the colorful, empty journal. The day went by like molasses in january. I had been at the school for 37 days now. The bell finally rang and I could hear students yelling with glee that the day was done and only one more day till friday. Everyone else was happy about going home, I was not. My aunt is the meanest person I have ever met. I look at her as the devil every day I come home. She yells at me for every little thing. I rode the bus home dreading what await me behind the door to my aunt’s house. I walked up to the door as...

Other people might says, “Better to be with someone who will make you happy”, what if the reason why you prefer to be alone is that someone who you want to be with is always ignoring you when you need his help or let say his affection and belongingness is not unto you.
