...Iraq war in the Persian Gulf. The last two years of Reagan's presidency were marred by a political scandal, which badly damaged his reputation as an honest person and committed to principle. The scandal was that the U.S. had secretly sold weapons to Iran and had diverted the profits from the sale to help the contras. Reagan denied the allegations. There was also said to be a law saying that the U.S. couldn't aid the contras.

Business Management

...Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. Company Background Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. (HHYY) was founded in 1993 by two business school graduates who thought there ought to be alternatives to the video game craze. Searching for a toy that could have mass market appeal they settled on yo-yos. Yo-yos have a nostalgic appeal to the baby boomer generation and are a novelty plaything for generation X. So, the main marketing thrust of HHYY is directed toward parents and grandparents rather than to the children who will actually play with the yo-yos. The latest advertising campaigns show 50-ish men competing in 1950’s era yo-yo competitions, grandmothers showing their grandsons how to do yo-yo tricks, and pre-teen girls trying to get their yo-yos away from their dads who are monopolizing them. This advertising campaign has been highly effective. After a couple of rough start-up years, HHYY achieved profitability in 1996 and has seen sales and profits increase each year since then. HHYY is a closely held Subchapter S Corporation with all the stock being held by the founders and their family members. The founders, John Cooper and Juan Martinez share the position of Office of the CEO. John is also the Chief Operating Officer (COO) while Juan is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). An organization chart for HHYY is in Figure 1. The firm employees about 350 people in a single location in the suburbs of Cut and Shoot, Texas. Figure 1. Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. ...Emergence of Trust Start with Why – Simon Sinek If a company mistreats their people, just watch how the employees treat their customers. Mud rolls down a hill, and if you’re the one standing at the bottom, you get hit with the full brunt. In a company, that’s usually the customer. EX: Continental Airlines -crummy place to work in 1994. “surly to costumers, surly to each other, and ashamed of their company. And you can’t have a good product without people who like coming to work. It just can’t be done,” he recounts. Continental going through hard time: Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection 2x in eight years. 1983 and 1991. 10 different CEOs. Lost 600 million and ranked last in every performance category. Bethune arrives and makes $250 million and was ranked as one of the best companies to work for in America. Made changes to improve operations, but biggest gain was impossible to measure: TRUST!!! Trust emerges because executive promises change. Trust is not a checklist. Fulfilling all your responsibilities does not create trust. Trust is a feeling, not a rational experience. Trust begins to emerge when we have a sense that another person or organization is driven by things other than their own self-gain. Trust - sense of value, real value Value is the transference of trust - Can’t convince someone you have value, just as you can’t convince someone to trust. - Have to earn trust by communicating and demonstrating that you share same values and beliefs. - WHY is just...

...The greatest issues shaping the health care industry in the US at present is the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The Act is changing reimbursement through Medicaid and Medicare. The ACA has also moved the focus of health care from institutions to the responsibility of the individual. Many of those changes will be in hospital staff as more jobs move toward prevention and primary care in community settings. Technology will be an important driver in both adding to efficiencies and aiding in the decentralization of health care. More will happen in free standing clinics and ambulatory care centers. More health care will happen in people’s homes. Technology will allow for more mobility and portability of healthcare (telehealth) as well as training in health care. Some of the technology may help with health care worker life balance and burnout prevention. (ASHHRA, 2012; Saver, 2006) Evidence –based health care practices will be another driver. It will make health care more efficient with those treatments deemed more efficacious beyond expected by professionals and the public. This is as much an issue of efficiency as value. The use of information technology again will be important to this driver. (ASHHRA, 2012; Saver, 2006) More collaboration will be necessary. This driver dovetails with the reduction of staff at hospitals and the reduction of staff due to the aging of nurses. Nursing are a core part of the health care in hospitals and in the community. Their practice may...

...Q # 1 {Chapter # 4} (a) If there are no restrictions on the number of taxi rides that can be supplied then in that case the equilibrium quantity will be 11 million taxi rides and the equilibrium price will be $6.5. This is illustrated in the diagram below : (b) If the Mayor set the price ceiling at $5.5 then in that case there will be a shortage of the 4 million taxi rides ($13M rides-$9M rides). The taxi drivers lose because now the fare per taxi ride has reduced from $6.5 to $5.5. Also the people who are unable to get a taxi ride at $5.5 (since the demand for the taxi rides is now being more than the supply of the taxi rides) will also stand to lose. Those who are able to get the taxi ride at $5.5 are benefited from this policy. This is illustrated in the diagram below : (c) Since the stock market crashed, the people in the Gotham city became poor. This resulted in the reduction in the demand of the taxi rides by 6 million rides per year at any given price. Since the demand for the taxi rides reduced due to a factor other than price, there will be a leftward shift in the demand curve for the taxi rides. Thus the new equilibrium quantity will be 8 million taxi rides and equilibrium price will be $5 per taxi ride. This is illustrated in the diagram and the grid below : Fare per ride | Quantity Demanded | Quantity Supplied | 7 | 4 | 12 | 6.5 | 5 | 11 | 6 | 6 | 10 | 5.5 | 7 | 9 | 5 | 8 | 8 | 4.5 | 9 | 7 | (d) The mayor announces a policy in...

...For exclusive use at EDHEC - Business School, 2015 Harvard Business School 9-198-117 Rev. September 17, 1998 Classic Pen Company: Developing an ABC Model The Classic Pen Company Case Jane Dempsey, controller of the Classic Pen Company, was concerned about the recent financial trends in operating results. Classic Pen had been the low-cost producer of traditional BLUE pens and BLACK pens. Profit margins were over 20% of sales. Several years earlier Dennis Selmor, the sales manager, had seen opportunities to expand the business by extending the product line into new products that offered premium selling prices over traditional BLUE and BLACK pens. Five years earlier RED pens had been introduced, which required the same basic production technology but could be sold at a 3% premium. And last year PURPLE pens had been introduced because of the 10% premium in selling price they could command. But Dempsey had just seen the financial results (see Exhibit 1) for the most recent fiscal year and was keenly disappointed. The new RED and PURPLE pens do seen more profitable than our BLUE and BLACK pens, but overall profitability is down and even the new products are not earning the margins we used to see from our traditional products. Perhaps this is the tougher global competition I have been reading about. At least the new line, particularly PURPLE pens, is showing much higher margins. Perhaps we should follow Dennis’ advice and introduce even more specialty colored...

...Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. 1 Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. BUS 644 Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. 2 First we must incorporate priority rules. Priority rules are regulations which determine in which succession the orders in front of a production line should be worked (Stevenson 2011, p. 712). In deciding what priority rules to acclimate, an organization such as Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. should achieve the following objectives: 1. Meet due dates of the customers if the product goes directly to them or the downstream operations if the product is but an input of another. 2. Minimize the time the order spends within the process including wait time. 3. Minimize work-in-process inventory which inevitable ties resources which can otherwise be used in more productive activities. 4. Minimize idle time of both machine and human resources. Given these objectives, Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. can choose from different priority rules and some of the most popular are as follows: (Retrieved from table 16.2, Stevenson 2011, p. 712).
