Engineering the Impossible: a Film Analysis

...Engineering the Impossible: A Film Analysis The documentary “Engineering the Impossible” features three ‘impossible’ superstructures that would define the world’s grandest architecture and engineering: Millennium Tower, Freedom Ship, and Gibraltar Bridge. David Nelson, one of the key designers, designed Millennium Tower to be a city within a city, hosting its own hospitals, schools and a range of entertainment and retail options large enough to attract and keep the traffic necessary for the financial success of such an endeavor. Its designers calculate that this structure would represent the best solution to the world’s population explosion. Freedom Ship, designed by Norman Nixon, would be the world’s first mobile community and would house more than 60,000 people whose dream is to travel the world without leaving the comforts of their home. Its passengers would circle the globe within two years with no need of a traveling backpack as the ship would contain all of the features that any modern city might have. Gibraltar Bridge, designed by T.Y. Lin, spanning 9 miles over the Straits of Gibraltar at the entryway to the Mediterranean, would serve as the first modern structure to bridge two continents together, starting from Morocco in Northern Africa to Spain in Southern Europe. According to its designers, the success of such an impressive design is expected to contribute to both of the continents’ tourism industry and economy. On the other hand, engineering the ‘impossible’ would...

Pre-20th Century African American History

...African Americans continue to face systemic racism in various aspects of society. This includes discrimination in employment opportunities, housing, healthcare, and the criminal justice system. Systemic racism maintains and limits the advancement of African Americans in these areas. For example, studies have shown that African Americans are more likely to be rejected for job interviews or promotions compared to their white counterparts with similar qualifications. Furthermore, fixing practices in housing have led to segregated neighborhoods with limited resources and opportunities for African American communities. Another significant challenge faced by African Americans is the inequality in education. African American students are more likely to attend underfunded schools with fewer resources, experienced teachers, and advanced placement courses. This contributes to lower academic achievement levels and higher dropout rates among African American students. The lack of access to quality education perpetuates the cycle of poverty and limits opportunities for future success. African Americans are greatly impacted by the...

Key words: clinical telehealth, videoconferencing, literature review, quality of service Introduction Abstract Videoconferencing technologies can vastly expand the reach of healthcare practitioners by providing patients (particularly those in rural/remote areas) with unprecedented access to services. While this represents a fundamental shift in the way that healthcare professionals care for their patients, very little is known about the impact of these technologies on clinical workflow practices and interprofessional collaboration. In order to better understand this, we have conducted a focused literature review, with the aim of providing policymakers, administrators, and healthcare professionals with an evidence-based foundation for decision-making. A total of 397 articles focused on videoconferencing in clinical contexts were retrieved, with 225 used to produce this literature review. Literature in the fields...

Management Paper

...Introduction By Paul Andrisani and Simon Hakim Co-Directors Center for Competitive Government Richard J. Fox School of Business and Management Temple University Privatization of public services to reduce cost and improve quality has a long history. Peter Drucker, the Austrian born management professor, was the first to suggest contracting out of local services to private companies. Indeed many municipal services were already contracted out by 1980 in Great Britain. But the most significant drive for privatization in Great Britain, which signaled the way to the rest of the world, came about with the election of Margaret Thatcher in 1979. In the following decade a host of state owned enterprises were privatized including British Petroleum, British Aerospace, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, National Freight Corp., Cable and Wireless, British Airways, British Gas, British Telecom, several water and electric utilities. In addition, public housing was sold to the residents and compulsory competitive bidding of local services was initiated. By the late 1980’s, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina elected presidents who adopted privatization initiatives. But the trend toward privatization was not confined to western countries. The collapse of Communism in the Soviet Bloc prompted the sale of many state owned enterprises as well as other forms of privatization. Even earlier, China in 1978 allowed private farming and later private sector manufacturing and...

Introduction The competitive pressure in today’s manufacturing landscape is more complex than ever, resulting in the need for companies to maintain high quality levels and concurrently strive to keep costs low. As a result, investing in China has become imperative for both private and public companies. The gradual adoption of free-market business principles, bolstering low labor costs, well-managed operations and supply chain efficiency all have propelled China to the forefront of business expansion. As a growing mobile phones manufacturer, we are seeking to extend our business to China in order to successfully compete in what has become a “global economy”. Our primary objective is to identify a suitable area to stage a domestic assembly operation and regional headquarters from which other subsequent Asian operations will be managed. Once the location and plan of action have been determined, we will need to facilitate staffing operations for the new site and define the parameters for the HR philosophy for the new regional organization. All planning, execution, and staffing goals must be met within 12 months. ------------------------------------------------- ...

Ps 101

...China The first one is the economy. China's economy has been typically the best-performing economy or among the best-performing economies in the world since 1979 when reforms began, averaging about 7 percent growth. One note of concern, though, is that those conditions that allowed that 7 percent growth are not likely to be prevalent in the years to come, because for over 30 years, China has relied extensively on lower wage rates and export-driven growth. But wage rates have been bid up, as happens; the Chinese are victims of their own success, you could say. And secondly, the rest of the countries in the world are not going through high rates of growth, and they’re not going to be importing the way they had been historically. So, that formula isn’t going to be as successful going forward as it has been. China needs to shift away from an export-driven economy to more of a consumption model. It needs to be mindful about funding its state-owned enterprises, about subsidizing state-owned companies. It needs to lessen its reliance on low-end manufacturing and move up the value chain. By the way, these aren’t my observations; these are observations by Chinese leadership. If you follow any Chinese leader’s speech on China’s economic transformation, these are the points he’ll make. We would call that market rationalism or just normal evolution as a country rises to middle-income status. But there are also some countervailing impulses. There’s a strong streak of economic nationalism;...
