Final Argumentative Essay Student’s should feel free to wear anything
When a person wakes up in the morning, should they feel more prone to go for a uniform or their regular “street clothes?” Eighty percent of adolescents are more likely to pick the regular clothes because they want to have their own style (Mitchell; Knechtle 3). Do students’ feel more confident when they are dressed in a uniform? A girl in “Dress Code Blue” said, “I feel uncomfortable in uniforms, and if I feel uncomfortable, then I feel lazy and don’t want to do anything” (DaCosta, 4). It is a drag to go to school knowing that people are more than likely to look like everyone else? A lot of students are between a rock and a hard place when it comes to this decision. Did you know that Americans spend around $1 billion per year on school uniforms? (School Uniforms). The topic on whether or not to wear uniforms is not beneficial to the students, or to parents, due to the fact that they’re unaffordable, they do not prevent gang affiliation, and they do not give students a sense a sense of individuality. One of the major issues students’ have with uniforms is that they are unaffordable and parents should not have to buy the uniforms. Over the years parents should have complained about how the uniforms are so expensive and how they are having financial problems. “In addition to finding that the level of parental perceptions of the cost of uniform, the survey elicited strong comments from parents on the subject of school uniforms” (West; Tidwell; Bomba; Elmore 1). Urban Schools should already have the uniforms for the student, if they want it to be a mandatory uniform school. Another minor issue was the uniforms being expensive. Every year the price of uniforms for students goes up higher than the previous year. That means parents have to

Mktg - vs Pink Case

...How do you feel about the potential exposure of young girls to PINK? As a customer of Victoria's Secret I do like the PINK brand and the merchandise it offers, but as a mother of two young girls ( 9 and 11 years) I don't agree that young girls (tweens) should be exposed to the VS's PINK brand. Even though the brand is very appealing and advertised as cute and playful I believe that some of the merchandise are very explicit and too sexy for tweens. There are many items in the PINK brand that younger girls can wear but some are more appropriate for adult women. The company classifies the brand as "loungewear" that is young, hip and casual. There are quite a few items, especially panties that are definitely not casual. They are made of lace and barely have any material that covers the body. They look very controversial. Some panties also have wording that various customers may interpret differently, wording such as "tonight's the Night" on front of the panties, or "Have Fun" on the back of the panties. The PINK merchandise shown on the VS website and in the catalogs is advertised by younger models that are posing very sexy and revealing. Their looks are not for young girls to look at. The young customers will look up to the models and try to look like them and that's not right as the tween girls are too young to be exposed to such a provocative advertising (victoriassecret.com). These types of merchandise are definitely not for young girls. I do agree that the brand should be geared...

Save the Cyclists

...voted yes to not enforcing motorcyclists to wear helmets. Since this decision there has been a substantial increase in fatalities of the motorcyclists. Michigan no longer requires motorcyclists to wear protective head gear. The new law basically states that if a rider chooses to not wear a helmet you are to have a $20,000 insurance policy that is supposed to cover your medical and other costs, in the event you are injured in an accident without a helmet on. It has been proven time and time again that $20, 000 will not cover even one day in a critical care unit at a local hospital. Michael Dabbs, president of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, said the $20,000 insurance coverage that riders are required to buy “would probably buy a part of the day in the ER and intensive care and not much more”. (Durkin, 2013) Motorcyclists feel that if they are required to wear a helmet it takes away their personal freedom. They feel it is a breach of their freedom and motorcyclists stand firm on this belief. Bikers think that if they choose not to wear a helmet, bikers should not have to. Bikers back up their passion about not wearing a helmet by stating that people can smoke drink, take drugs and etc. in America; so why not have the freedom of not wearing a helmet in America. “Helmets, some riders say, take away from the freedom they feel on their bike. The choice to protect their head with a helmet should be theirs, and the government should not “tell them what to do.” It is, after...

The Many Faces Behind the Veil Engelsk B Essay

...Aflevering 1 Summary of the text “The many faces behind the veil” The text “The many faces behind the wheel” are written by Arifa Akbar and Jerome Taylor. The text concerns about a Muslim woman who wears a veil/hijab. They wear it to break free of society. Rahmanara Chowdhury age 29, is one of these women who wear the veil. Rahmanara lives with a family with seven daugthers. All of Rahmanara’s sisters wear the hijab, but none of them were forced to wear it. Rahmarana didn't wear the hijab until her teenage years. But when she did, her father accepts it, in a very special way. “He just stood there watching me, but he never said anything, he just accepted it there and then.”1 Rahmanara feels comfortable while wearing the hijab, she feels like nobody can stop her. Rahmanara and her sisters respect each other’s choice about wearing the hijab. Rahmanara’s opinion about people, who doesn’t wear the hijab is liberal. She does this for her God and not for people. An outline: In the following text I have to give an outline of the various attitudes to wearing the veil in three texts. The first text “I want to unveil my views on an important issue” brings out that Jack Straw interviews a Muslim lady who wears a Niqab. She covers all of her face in clothes, except the eyes. Jack isn’t comfortable with interviewing these women, because he can’t talk to her “face to face”. But Jack does respects muslims choices on wearing Niqabs and other headwearings. Since they don’t break any...

Happiness

...Happiness To be happy is to be free of sorrow, worry and fear. With truth, courage and faith there’s a lot of happiness. Truth within brings courage and you will then always experience happiness. Happiness is not a big thing – when you are not performing good, righteous actions, the return of that is that you experience sorrow. The heart is very sensitive and, if you get sensitive about anything that happens, you will feel unhappy. When you worry you are unable to perform good actions. It is with faith you can perform good actions. If, before coming into action, you have the thought and feeling that you want to do something good, that brings happiness inside; when the intellect is engaged in something good it is automatically healed and you feel good. All you need to do is to remain light and easy. By not thinking too much, the love and truth within us enables others to be light and easy, and we feel good inside that we can do things so easily and naturally. Have the thought: “I am a soul with a royal personality, so what should my thoughts be like? I am carefree and not careless.” Those who are carefree do not need to think about anything. At one end of the scale are negative thoughts of giving and taking sorrow and at the other there are positive thoughts - thoughts of accepting and giving happiness, peace and love. Let there be a feeling of a connection of happiness between you and others. Your nature should be detached from everything around you. It is attachment to people...

Hillhurst School Must Wear Uniforms

...Students at HIllhurst School Must Wear Uniforms C: Good Morning/Afternoon ladies and gentleman. Today we are going to present 3 points supporting the resolution: Be it resolved that students at Hillhurst School must wear uniforms. I am Cassie and I will discuss how uniforms provide equality. Now I will define the resolution: By uniforms, we mean outfits that still enable you to have free choice in jackets, shoes, socks and everything but tops and pants. Also when we mean by uniforms we mean a summer outfit and a winter outfit so the students will not be too cold or too warm. C: My first point on why uniforms can provide equality is that you do not have to buy anything to “fit in”. With uniforms you can make your friends because of their personality and things that you both like, such as art or science, not because they have designer outfits and the biggest friend group. That way, it makes it a lot easier to have friends and a lot harder to have enemies. My second point is that everyone is at the same level. No one can act like, or actually be, better than anyone else. Also no one can have more friends because they have more money. For example if there was a nice kid who was good at...

Influences of Visual Media

...family. If you think about it over time the family look changed. Andy Griffith was a single Dad that had his Aunt there to help with his child. The Brady’s were two divorced parents bringing all the children together trying to create harmony. Then we had the Huxtables that were an upper class black family and the Evans family from Good Times to show how the lower class lived. Now the family that so many Americans compare themselves to is the Kardashians. Quite a difference from the Cleavers. Advertisements on television also play a huge part in shaping societies view of what we should do or have to “fit in.” As with anything there is always positive and negative. I think the social influence of visual media is mostly positive. As far as the news goes distance is no longer a barrier. We also have up to date news and weather reports. This is extremely positive and helps warn the public when severe weather is about to come. Shows such as The Voice or America’s Got Talent helps discover people with talent that before would only be locally recognized. Games help people connect with one another and form a team. I think this helps so many adolescence discover team work. Some of the more negative sides to the social influence of visual media. Some of the negative influences are the commercials that make out culture want to buy, wear or have. I feel this leaves the more unfortunate people to feel as if they are not living life to its full potential. Making them feel less because...

Analysis - Baby Storm

...opinions in general. Therefore Witterick’s receivers are the people who read about her family in the first place. The article is written in long sentences with a fairly complicated language. The language function is not directive, because the sender, Kathy Witterick, is not trying to make her receivers change their way of raising children, though obviously, she believes it would be the wisest thing to do. Nor is it informative because Witterick does not make use of statistics or hard facts, and it is not written in a formal vocabulary. Witterick uses a metaphor on page 3, line 32, ‘In my heart of hearts, I squirm when my son picks a dress from the rack…’ to let the receivers know it is not an all together easy decision to let her son wear whatever he likes, (though, she knows it is the right thing to do). The figurative language, the extensive use of adjectives and the strongly positively/negatively connoting words all point to the expressive language function, and the fact that it is an argumentative text focused on expressing the sender’s attitude confirms that. All through the text Witterick is very honest about everything, which assures the receiver that she is not ashamed of her opinions. She uses the rhetorical modes ethos when she refers to the knowledge her job-experience gives her, and when she makes it clear that she is a mother with three children who knows by experience...

“Animals Must Not Be Murdered for the Benefit of Human Kind”

...Date of submission : 28.12.14 Animals must not be murdered for the benefit of mankind Imagine livening in a cage for your entire life, in poor conditions, with no food and water. Then you are suddenly ripped from your cage, beaten to near death, and painfully skinned alive. Your body is then tossed into a pile, like a piece of garbage, with others who have suffered the same fate or simply get shot in brad day light because someone thought you were harmful to others. Yes, animals should have their own rights too. I do not mean the same rights and morals as human being, but a right to be free from harm by human beings. Animals just like humans experience emotions and pain. In the wild they must protect themselves, but when up against human being, they do not have the power that we do, and often lose their homes or get killed without any other choice for survival. Therefore, animals must not be hunted as a form of sport, be a puppet in running tests for human benefits and, must not be used or abused to get amusement as a form of entertainment. Animal hunting must to be banned. Animals are like human beings. They should not be killed for any reason. People need to treat animals like their own self. Species of animals are declining due to hunting. Hunters have no limitations and are free to do whatever they like. For instance, lot of people goes out with hunts in the forest and chase after animals, shoot them. But why shoot an animal, is it for fur, meat or just pure pleasure...

Harrison Bergeron Equality

...Equality is an idea that is good in theory. It makes people feel good to think that everyone is on the same level and no person is better than them. That idea, that no one can be better than another person, has flaws. There will always be someone that is just a little bit better than someone at something and that, sometimes, can make people scared. So, while people preach the idea that complete equality is best for everyone and no one person should be better than another; Kurt Vonnegut shows that complete equality can mean more than just equal pay and equal rights he shows that every person being equal on every level is not a good thing. In the short story, “Harrison Bergeron”, Vonnegut creates a theme portraying the message that for all to...
