...Chapter 9 Random Numbers This chapter describes algorithms for the generation of pseudorandom numbers with both uniform and normal distributions. 9.1 Pseudorandom Numbers 0.814723686393179 Here is an interesting number: This is the first number produced by the Matlab random number generator with its default settings. Start up a fresh Matlab, set format long, type rand, and it’s the number you get. If all Matlab users, all around the world, all on different computers, keep getting this same number, is it really “random”? No, it isn’t. Computers are (in principle) deterministic machines and should not exhibit random behavior. If your computer doesn’t access some external device, like a gamma ray counter or a clock, then it must really be computing pseudorandom numbers. Our favorite definition was given in 1951 by Berkeley professor D. H. Lehmer, a pioneer in computing and, especially, computational number theory: A random sequence is a vague notion . . . in which each term is unpredictable to the uninitiated and whose digits pass a certain number of tests traditional with statisticians . . . 9.2 Uniform Distribution Lehmer also invented the multiplicative congruential algorithm, which is the basis for many of the random number generators in use today. Lehmer’s generators involve three integer parameters, a, c, and m, and an initial value, x0 , called the seed. A September 16, 2013 1 2 sequence of integers is defined by xk+1 = axk + c mod m. Chapter 9. Random Numbers The...

...Tj Turner Ms. Cooney E4/6th 29 March 2016 Attending College Some may say college is not for them, and others believe it is. College is indeed time consuming and technical, but it is also the start of the life of some people's dreams. A person could give endless reasons as to why they do not want to attend college, such as: it is too expensive, it is time consuming, or there are not always jobs in the field they got their major in. Others will argue that. A person should attend college because it gives better jobs, more opportunities, and easier connections in the work field when looking for a job. People with only a high school diploma do not make as much money as a person with something as simple as an associate's degree. “People with a college degree make around $1,100 a week. Someone with a high school diploma makes just $638” (GreatSchools Staff). An associate's degree is only two years of college. Some people only go for two years because that is all they need for the profession they want to proceed in. Although a person that attends college for more than two years obviously has a higher degree. The higher the degree you have, the more money you make. Some parents do not want to support their children beyond high school. “A lot of high school graduates have never worked, paid a bill, or learned anything about personal finance” (Slide, Casey). College will most definitely teach a person how to finance wisely. Not only does college help a person earn more...

...Hello everyone and welcome to Hadoop Fundamentals – What is Hadoop. My name is Warren Pettit. In this video we will explain what is Hadoop and what is Big Data. We will define some Hadoop-related open source projects and give some examples of Hadoop in action. Imagine this scenario: You have 1GB of data that you need to process. The data is stored in a relational database on your desktop computer and this desktop computer has no problem handling this load. Then your company starts growing very quickly, and that data grows to 10GB. And then 100GB. And you start to reach the limits of your current desktop computer. So you scale-up by investing in a larger computer, and you are then OK for a few more months. When your data grows to 10TB, and then 100TB, you are quickly approaching the limits of that computer. Moreover, you are now asked to feed your application with unstructured data coming from sources like Facebook, Twitter, RFID readers, sensors, and so on. Your management wants to derive information from both the relational data and the unstructured data and wants this information as soon as possible. What should you do? Hadoop may be the answer! What is Hadoop? Hadoop is an open source project of the Apache Foundation. It is a framework written in Java originally developed by Doug Cutting who named it after his son's toy elephant. Hadoop uses Google’s MapReduce and Google File System technologies as its foundation. It is optimized to handle massive quantities of data which...

...Why Cambridge Hospital Community Health Network embarked on the ABC study. 1. Change in macro environment 1) A series of government reform significantly reduce the revenue of hospital. Federal legislative and state legislators have cut the revenue of hospital get from Medicare and Medicaid gradually since 1995. Also, the proliferation of managed care and DRG reimbursement system to outpatient clinics have fixed the revenue of hospital regardless the type or time length of service that hospital provides to patients. 2) The wave of hospital integrations forms strong competitors, i.e. joint ventures with insurance companies or nonprofit or for profit chains that could share expensive diagnostic equipment or financial risks. 2. Network itself: Hospital economies are very often based on public funding and the primary objective of these organizations is much more to provide the acceptable level of care with predefined budget. While the hospital was required to make a 14 million reduction in expenditures in the next two fiscal years, which is 15% of the entire hospitals operating budget. Also, Cambridge Hospital Community Health Network is high cost provider, whose unit of service costs had been rising at a rate of 10% per year. The first step for managers of Network to reduce expenditure while maintain the quality of service is to understand the detailed cost information, however, the current cost system seems cannot fulfill this requirement. 3. The drawbacks of current...

...1. Explain the challenge of producing accurate cost estimates when working in harsh geographical conditions. These conditions were a bit of challenge for this project. It would be hard to predict accurate cost estimates due to a number of factors in this project. Setting up in this area is particularly hard due to the fact that it was to be set up in a region that is close to the Pakistani border. They would have to set up security contracts, first of all to protect everyone involved in the project. The site was several hundred kilometers from the larger cities. They would have to set up living quarters and transportation. It probably made it even harder since the contractors do not know the area. The area is also remote so you have to account for getting the supplies to the location. I would assume there was a lot of activity based costing going on here. The real problem I see would be to plan for all these cost estimates. They would have to do some research on a project “like” this and see what costs were accrued in that project or they are going to be taking some educated guesses on how much this is all going to cost. Also the weather in this mountainous terrain will add more cost to the project. The challenge would have been hard for this project because of all the variables that the contracting team would have had to put up with. Security, terrain, transportation of people and resources and living quarters being at the front of the...

...HRIS software is designed to manage people, policies and procedures. the major characteristics are:- * Recruiting / ATS (Applicant Tracking System) * Core Human Resources * Benefit Administration /Open Enrolment * Absence Management * Compensation Management * Training & Development * Workflow * Self-Service (Candidate / Employee / Manager) * Reporting HCM (Human Capital Management) HCM software includes every element of an HRIS, but adds Talent Management and global capabilities such as multi-lingual, multi-currency, country-specific formatting and possibly localization. Listed below are what I believe to be the major functional elements for a vendor to call its solution an HCM. * HRIS * Onboarding * Performance and Goal Management * Position Control / Budgeting * Succession Planning * Salary Planning * Global * Analytics * Learning Management System (LMS) – This functionality is not typically part of an HCM since the primary purpose is the actual content and delivery of e-learning vs. the technology or the mechanism to track employee development. HRMS (Human Resource Management System) HRMS software providers typically cover every element of an HRIS and many include the capabilities of an HCM. Because the HRMS business is so massive and covers such a wide range of employee size and functional requirements, not all HRMS providers have a progressive Talent Management component included in their...

...Ivory: Illegal Selling Procedures and Methods Man’s relationship with elephants is beset by contradictions. On the one hand, they are regarded with awe and fascination; while on the other, whole populations are eradicated in pursuit of land or ivory (David 444). Even though elephants do have natural predators- the young are often killed by lions, hyenas, or crocodiles- by far their most dangerous enemy is humankind (David 444). As far back as classical antiquity, North African elephant populations were dwindling rapidly. They finally disappeared during the Dark or Middle Ages (“Saving the Elephant”). The Arab ivory trade, which started in the 17th century, precipitated a further rapid decline among elephant populations in both West and East Africa (“Saving the Elephant”). The colonial era accelerated the process by opening up previously inaccessible areas introducing modern technology, notably high-powered rifles; in Africa, the destruction of elephants reached a peak between 1830 and 1900 (“New Rules”). Today, continuing deforestation and the encroachment of roads, farms, and towns into former elephants habits threaten both African and Asian elephant by restricting their range, cutting off seasonal migration routes, and bringing them into more frequent conflict with people (“New Rules”). Perceptions of the main conservation issues involved have changed radically since the 1960s when the debate centered on local overpopulation of elephants in protected areas (David...

Data security is very important in the contemporary world where people might want to steal your data or corrupt it for obvious reasons. I could have done great in presenting my lesson to the class if I had followed the necessary steps required for the delivery of an ideal lesson. Components like pre assessment, clarity, audience interaction, evaluation are one of these necessary steps that everyone should follow. Materials foe the audience during the lesson are also important as the help retain the information and also help the audience to say on track of the lesson.
