While growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, my family listened to lots of rock n roll, alternative, and Americana music. Guitars, mandolins, pianos, and drums were scattered around the house and any free time with the family entailed a jam session playing music from these genres. When I became a teenager, I enjoyed the rap and hip-hop that my older brother listened to, which I immediately immersed myself in since they were great for pumping me up for the sports I played. Left out of my years before college was the newer music genre known as EDM or Electronic Dance Music. Luckily for me, I currently have a teammate on the lacrosse team who not only sets our playlist for pre-game warm-ups, but also has become a weekly EDM deejay for parties …show more content…
Calvin Harris, Tiësto and Steve Aoki currently dominate the genre. Although there are a few super-star artists, Zac really enjoys searching for new artists on SoundCloud, a website for new artists to put music up for critique, used frequently in the EDM world. He does this often with housemates, which makes the music much more meaningful to him. Coming from Colorado, Zac didn’t know many people and getting into this type of music with all of his friends brought them closer. He says it is a very communal thing and since there is so much music available, there is bound to be something new that his buddies haven’t heard before. Zac is optimistic that the festival movement as well as the sharing of songs through SoundCloud will continue to spread the genre and give it the international appreciation he feels it deserves. “A lot of electronic artists had one popular song on SoundCloud, and it would be shared among listeners and other, maybe more famous, artists which causes a chain reaction in the song’s popularity.” His interest in discovering new songs and remixes led him to begin deejaying locally. It started out with Zac having great taste with songs on his iPhone at parties, and then evolved into getting a turntable and mixing songs at his friends’ parties as well as making his own

...Assignment 1 (20%, due 8:55 am Friday 13 March) Question 1. Zac Zaccary is a senior analyst, and your manager, at Top Notch Fund Managers. He, gently, throws a copy of the 2014 annual report of The Warehouse Group Limited on to your desk and states “the Five Year Summary shows that profit after tax increased from $60 million in 2010 to $78 million in 2014, but they also report an ‘adjusted’ net profit which decreased from $83 million to $61 million over the same period. As investors, which figure should we pay attention to? At the same time, operating cash flow decreased from $129 million to $77 million over the same period. I wonder what has caused that? I would like you to look at profitability, cash flow and liquidity.” He continues “The group made some big acquisitions in the last couple of years. How well are those turning out? Retailers’ operating margins are always pretty small, and if the new acquisitions are not profitable, they can drag the whole group down. Have the managers been able to protect or improve profits from the older stores and also get good results from the new businesses? And how is the efficiency of operations trending?” Required: A fund operated by Top Notch Fund Managers is a potential substantial investor in The Warehouse Group, and Zac must advise the fund managers whether to invest. Draw up the memo that you would send to Zac to address his questions. Your analysis should cover the issues he has raised, with particular attention...

Russia Now

...Briefing Paper 2 Poli 3256 Area Studies: Russia November 3, 2010 By: Zac Gore The Health of Russian Society and a look into Healthcare Summary It’s the end of 2007 and there are still many issues to address when it comes to the health of Russians and health care itself. HIV/AIDS continues to hover at epidemic levels, alcoholism is a country wide problem and death by alcohol poisoning is still on the rise in some areas. Over half of the deaths in Russia are caused by heart problems but the funding for treatment remains insufficient. Russia leads the world in the prevalence of smoking and has yet to sign the World Health Organizations anti-smoking convention. Health care facilities fail to meet fire and safety norms with things like faulty electric power systems and unsatisfactory fire evacuation requirements. Drug addiction continues to be a problem and over 90 percent of the heroin coming into the country is from Afghanistan. Some other noteworthy concerns are the appearances of avian (bird) flu throughout the country and the large number of tuberculosis cases including ones that are drug resistant. However there are some positive trends that have developed. Within the next few years about 30,000 young HIV patients are slated to receive therapy. Drug use is not as prevalent as it was several years ago and increases in drug addiction have ended. The health of Russian conscripts is improving as well compared with the last several years. ...PROGRESS IN PHOTOVOLTAICS: RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS Prog. Photovolt: Res. Appl. (2012) Published online in Wiley Online Library (wileyonlinelibrary.com). DOI: 10.1002/pip.1255 PAPER PRESENTED AT 26TH EU PVSEC, HAMBURG, GERMANY 2011 Solar cell generations over 40% efficiency R. R. King*, D. Bhusari, D. Larrabee, X.-Q. Liu, E. Rehder, K. Edmondson, H. Cotal, R. K. Jones, J. H. Ermer, C. M. Fetzer, D. C. Law and N. H. Karam Spectrolab, Inc., 12500 Gladstone Ave, Sylmar, CA 91342, USA ABSTRACT Multijunction III-V concentrator cells of several different types have demonstrated solar conversion efficiency over 40% since 2006, and represent the only third-generation photovoltaic technology to enter commercial power generation markets so far. The next stage of solar cell efficiency improvement, from 40% to 50%-efficient production cells, is perhaps the most important yet, since it is in this range that concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) systems can become the lowest cost option for solar electricity, competing with conventional power generation without government subsidies. The impact of 40% and 50% cell efficiency on cost-effective geographic regions for CPV systems is calculated in the continental US, Europe, and North Africa. We take a systematic look at a progression of multijunction cell architectures that will take us up to 50% efficiency, using modeling grounded in well-characterized solar cell materials systems of today’s 40% cells, discussing the theoretical, materials science, and...

Marketing Plan

...Marketing Plan for Brand Roll of MarkStrat firm R Period 2 Submitted by: Zac Lennon Submitted to: The Board of Directors Executive Summary The brands performance for the first period wasn’t where we wanted it to be but we see many opportunities for this brand to grow and expand. The strength of this brand is that the performance level is higher than any of its competitors. The weakness is that this product has such a high base cost that we were forced to have such a high retail price. The plan to improve the brand performance is to do an R&D project to reduce the base cost which will allow us to make more money and to also reduce the selling price to its competitors. In return this will also put us in good standing with our primary target market and will make us the only firm with sole control of the explorer market. The performance objectives for the first period were as followed. The sales of the first period were 13,100, while we only got 8.1% of our primary target market. We understand completely that this isn’t good enough and we are doing everything in our power to fix this so it doesn’t happen again next period. Our goal for next period is to have at least 20% of the market share. We will see it is attainable because of all the changes that we will discuss with you later on this paper. I. Overview a. The brands current primary target segment is explorers. The other competitive brands in the segment are TOPS and LOOP. The brand in a way has a secondary...

Introduction It is without a doubt that globalisation has been the driver of the increased link between nations, allowing for the operation of many organisations in borderless economies. As globalisation continues to impact organisations, they are forced to undertake new and innovative approaches in order to maintain or gain a competitive advantage. As a result of this, many ethical issues have come to light, so it is important to acknowledge organisations adopting methods of corporate social responsibility. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) essentially encompasses the refraining from any action that will attract unfavourable publicity due to its social unacceptability (Carroll, 2010). The concept of CSR has proven to be an area of focus in recent times, especially in regards to consumers and stakeholders. This report will explore Google Inc’s corporate social responsibility when...

...approach is that a better understanding of the extent, form, production and disposal or use of the proceeds of crime helps to determine the appropriate interventions. Tentative steps towards establishing trends in money laundering and the financing of terrorism have been taken over the past few years. A team of World Bank experts visited Botswana at the end of 2006 to assess the implementation of the FATF anti-money laundering and counter-financing of terrorism (AML and CFT) standards. In early 2007 the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC), in collaboration with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) of South Africa, undertook research to establish trends in money laundering in Botswana. The findings are yet to be publicised. However, what is apparent is that these investigations were by no means exhaustive. This paper is a contribution to the discourse on money laundering and the financing of terrorism in Botswana. It provides an overview of Botswana’s AML/CFT regimes. This will follow...
