Zongzi (rice dumplings) is an essential food of the Dragon Boat Festival, and is originated during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, China (770-221 BC) more than 2,000 years ago. The great poet Qu Yuan was an aspiring politician as an upright minister for King Huai of Chu. However, he was not appreciated by the king and was opposed by aristocrats heads by Zi Lan, and then deposed and exiled by King Huai.
Later, when Qu Yuan hearing that Qin’s army conquers Chu’s capital, with a grief, he threw himself down into the Miluo River in despair. It was the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 278 BC.

After his death, Chu’s people never stopped mourning Qu Yuan; they rowed their boats on the river to try to find his corpse. People threw Zongzi (pyramid-shaped glutinous rice dumplings stuffing with beans wrapped in reed/bamboo leaves) in to the Miluo River to divert fish or dragon from attacking his body. That’s why Chinese people later followed the customs such as dragon boat racing, eating Zongzi each year on that day. Nowadays, the custom of eating Zongzi is popular in South Korea, Japan and Southeast Asian nations. People will warp up Zongzi themselves and stuffing it in various flavors, it could be dates, chestnuts, chicken or other things. It could either be sweet or salty to suit everyone’s preference.
This dish represents and reflects the oppressed people and their living standards. Date back to the war period, rice and bean are considered extremely scarce and vital, especially for people in the lower class. Poor and working people who were oppressed by the authority, put their most precious food together to honor Qu Yuan, and therefore Zongzi was created. However, when the war ended and the supply of food became plentiful, people began to realize that Zongzi is easy to carry, store and are both healthy and filling, since it is wrapped in bamboo leaves, it stays fresh for days and does not deform easily. Today this dish is served as a traditional food with a new meaning as for family to gather together, enjoying the Zongzi during each year’s Dragon Boat Festival among all Chinese people in every social class.

Shanghai Zhu Jia Jiao – the Ancient River Town

...don’t know the story of Dragon Boat Festival, there was once a great poet and Politian Qu Yuan, who jumped into the river out of despair for his empire. People then mourned his death by throwing glutinous rice wrapped with reed leaves, known as Zongzi, into the river, hoping to prevent animals from eating his body. These Zongzi became a cultural festival food, and can be found everywhere in this ancient river town. Zhu Jia Jiao is an ancient town along a river, with historic Chinese houses, stores, and bridges. I can imagine how this town had been hundreds of thousands of years ago, just like the daily life illustrated in the famous Chinese painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” (清明上河圖). But looking from one of the 36 bridges today, it feels nostalgia to see the same view, except that regular residents are replaced by tourists and business people. On the narrow streets you can still find elders dressed in traditional costume, selling cultural food made in the old fashioned way. Namely, the famous stinky Tofu that you can trace from far far away. Also, because of the special festival, there were people demonstrating the process of making Zongzi, and with the entrance ticket every visitor can experience making one Zongzi for free! Wrapping the ingredients with a reed leaf is truly a trained skill. Tourism, beneficial for development, can be troublesome without proper management. The place is over crowded with business opportunities and the wastes and pollution...

...A. Geography >China stretches some 5,026 kilometres (3,123 mi) across the East Asian landmass. China is bordered by seas and waters eastward, with the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, Taiwan Strait, and South China Sea, and bordered by landmasses on its 3 other sides, from North Korea to Vietnam. China has been officially and conveniently divided into 5 homogeneous physical macro-regions: Eastern China (subdivided into the northeast plain, north plain, and southern hills), Xinjiang-Mongolia, and the Tibetan-highlands. Its physical features are multiples. The eastern and southern half of the country, its seacoast fringed with offshore islands, is a region of fertile lowlands and foothills with most of the agricultural output and human population. The western and northern half of China is a region of sunken basins (Gobi, Taklamakan), rolling plateaus, and towering massifs, including a portion of the highest tableland on earth (Tibetan Plateau) with lower agricultural possibilities and thus, far less populated. Traditionally, the Chinese population centered around the Chinese central plain and oriented itself toward its own enormous inland market, developing as an imperial power whose center lay in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River on the northern plains. More recently, the 18,000-kilometers coastline have been used extensively for export-oriented trade, making a power shift, with the coastline provinces becoming the leading economic center.
