A view on the importance of college
“Almost 90% of respondents to one survey thought that a college education is as important today as a high school education used to be … “ ( Lewis 46 ). I absolutely agree with the 90 percentile because throughout our society it is very hard to find a well paying job without a college degree. Growing up most adults I was acquainted with either did not attend college, or even graduate high school. Graduating high school back in their time opened doors for many job opportunities, but today the bar is set so high with competition that college is almost necessary. Jobs are so fierce in present time that many even look at resumes depending on which college the applicant attended.
Do we really need a college degree? Well, let’s consider how life would be without one. Back in some time college was reserved for the wealthy, privileged. Today, more than 18 million people are enrolled in some kind of further education. Education is viewed as vital to people’s success. In order to compete in the nation’s workforce you must strive for a college education. College has become more and more important as jobs have gotten more complicated. Due to the rise in technology throughout the world many jobs require a much higher level of education than in the past. Therefore college is a requirement for a career that will involve a wide base of knowledge. Studies show that college graduates make almost twice as much as those without a degree.
Getting a college education is important because it will contribute significantly to your development as a person. College is a time where you learn a lot, both in and out of the classroom, including things that will remain with you for the rest of your life. College reminds you that after high school becoming an adult comes with a lot of responsibility. It makes you realize that in order to succeed you must be determined and work hard.
