1 Corinthians 1 Meditation Paper

My meditation on 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 took me to many different places and thoughts all while grounding my theology being cruciform in the relationship we have with Jesus. My phases of the meditation are broken up into four parts. First I did some pre-meditation preparation and prayer. The second part of the meditation involved the first twenty minutes of the hour where I truly tried to grasp what living cruciform meant. The third, and longest, portion of the meditation consisted of me going line by line through the text and applying what Paul was saying about living cruciform to my life. The final part was my response in worship.
Considering my pre-meditation thoughts and prayer, I was anxious before this exercise, that day had been long and I was worried about not being able to be extremely conscientious during the exercise. Prior to this meditation I read 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 and prayed that Holy Spirit would illuminate the passage for me, show me how to live cruciform, and where this should happen first. I began my meditation in the Talbot East prayer room but them moved to the second story Talbot garden as the prayer room became filled with people. I …show more content…
So entering into this meditation I only had rough a grasp on cruciform theology, and was really struggling to apply it to my life in any way that made sense or felt tangible. The meditation began as I read over the passage several times, building together a definition of cruciform based on what Paul said. As I read the passage, one of the first things that I realized was the outright necessity to live a cruciform life; which is a life centered on and living out of Christ’s crucifixion. The second insight I had during this portion of the meditation is that in God’s wisdom he has chosen to make the cross of Christ the way we can understand Him. Without truly knowing and loving the cross of Christ we can’t know God, we can only know things about

...Spiritual Disciplines: The Origin and Present Practices in Ministry Vivia J. Green Grand Canyon University: MIN:505 3/27/2013 Introduction The purpose of this paper is to explain that spiritual disciplines are trained behaviors that promote spiritual growth to full maturity in Christ which also brings about total transformation. Spiritual disciplines have historical beginnings that were practiced both in the Old Testament and the New Testament that are pattered by Christians today. These disciplines vary and are not just limited to a standardized set of disciplines. Boa (2001) outlined twenty spiritual disciplines such as Solitude and Silence. Prayer, Journaling, Study and Meditation, Fasting, and Chastity, Secrecy, Confession, Fellowship, Submission and Guidance, Simplicity, Stewardship and Sacrifice, Worship and Celebration, Service and Witness (p. 83-86). The main focuses of spiritual disciplines are to get a more intimate relationship with God and their utilization is not for self-glory. Some disciplines however, augment each other and can therefore be practiced at the same time (Boa, 2001). By examining a few of these disciplines will show that Christians can benefit from them and become more effective for the ministry. Origin of Spiritual disciplines According to Gardner (1999), “all the world’s major religions endorse fasting for spiritual, therapeutic or political purposes and fasting for Christians has an ancient and credible history (p. 32). In the Old and...

Sin That Destroys Us All

...Kyle Jordan Estanislao TREDTWO C37 2/17/2015 The Clutches of Sin Sin as we all know is formally defined as the infraction against the word of God. With every sinful act we commit, it is like we are distancing ourselves from God. Despite this, it seems that nobody could still stay away from the clutches of sin. Nobody is perfect. We live in an imperfect world filled with temptations and bad influences. Unfortunately no matter how hard we try to stay away and fight off these negative inducements, eventually we would succumb to the pull of sin. As my father always quotes from the bible “The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Due to this, people have this common notion in mind that if everybody eventually turns out to be a sinner, then why bother trying so hard not to be one. These people would then rationalize that it is ok to sin because God is super forgiving and that by confessing our sins, everything would be ok. It is as if by simply telling someone of one’s bad deeds, it would magically erase all the damages done because of one’s sinful acts. What they don’t realize is that as described in the lecture, sin is a spiral that enslaves us, making us addicted to it. Every time we commit a sin, it opens us to a possibility that we would keep repeating them until it now harms our major social and personal relations. Sin doesn’t just affect oneself, it also affects the people around us. Every time we commit a sin, more likely than not, someone would be negatively...

Definitions and explanations are given on each gift but we also explain the ‘how’ of each operation. Christians need to understand what type of gifts they are receiving before they can operate in them. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not manifesting much in some places because of a lack of teaching. It is teaching that brings faith and understanding for the operation of the gifts. This book was written with this purpose...

God has commanded His blessing on my storehouses. He has opened His Good treasures and I shall lend and not borrow. I am the head and not the tail. He has given me power to make wealth. ..."THINK ON THESE THINGS" (Philippians 4:8) A Critique of Telling Yourself the Truth, by William Backus & Marie Chapian and The Lies We Believe, by Chris Thurman Much current "Christian" counseling is heavily rooted in Freud, promoting archaeological digs into the hidden recesses of one's past and strong encouragement to see oneself as a victim of the sins of others. In contrast to this increasingly popular approach, other Christian authors have opted for the cognitive techniques developed primarily by Albert Ellis, founder of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).1 Two key examples are Telling Yourself the Truth and The Lies We Believe (abbreviated as TYT and LWB). Both Backus and Thurman give credit to Ellis for his ideas. However, it should be noted at the outset that Ellis is an aggressive atheist who believes that religious faith is grounded in "irrational" ideas and is evidence of mental instability. (See Discernment Publications' critique of Ellis in "Exposing the Roots" series.) At first glance, the cognitive approach may appear consistent with biblical teachings about renewal of the mind. Personal responsibility is a critical emphasis, in opposition to the prevalent "victim" theory that permeates too much modern counseling. However, as we shall explore more fully, there is nevertheless a wide chasm between the REBT of Albert Ellis and scriptural truth. In addition to Albert Ellis, Thurman quotes and credits M. Scott Peck, a popular author who espouses New Age theology...

...three hundred student Bible study groups in Canada and the United States, almost every one of them started by the students themselves. Very evidently God has caused the Chinese in North America to be very responsive to the gospel. The Chinese church is educated, affluent and filled with talent.1 As Two-Third World missions come into prominence in mission circles, the church in the West is looking to the Chinese church to "pick up the baton" and carry out the Great Commission across cultural barriers. Yet with all seven hundred congregations the Chinese church is reaching only five percent of the Chinese community with the gospel.2 She is a small minority. And although endowed with a rich tradition of spirituality and evangelistic zeal, she is weak in two crucial areas: doctrinal maturity 3 and church consciousness.4 She is a young church. Jesus calls the church to disciple the nations (Matthew 28:19-20). Jesus calls us to seek His Kingdom and righteousness in all that we do (Matthew 6:33). Paul tells us that if any human being is in Christ, everything – including his or her whole life -- is made new. The individual is new, or more precisely, there is a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), a new world. This means that the Lordship of Christ includes His lordship over our work, our careers, our families, and our ambitions. We are to live as living demonstrations that Jesus is the answer. If Jesus is the answer, what are the questions? 5 In every culture and in every generation...
