As such, Alfred H. Barr, Jr. neglected to include Asian modern art in his seminal 1936 map, The Development of Abstract Art, and consequently, I have provided a revision. Barr’s depiction epitomizes a European-dictated arrangement of art history, which excludes all versions of modernity not part of ‘his’ visual. I question the legitimacy of this omission. Modernity is not a singular definition, not solely manifested in one structured European interpretation. It is not necessarily residing in one place, but migrating and shifting, following the social conditions and traditions which surround different geographical contexts. One may contend that Asian modernist art does not belong within Barr’s space or that it does not fit any prescribed definition of modern art. There are valid reasons for this belief; the most widespread insisting it is merely a ‘copy’ of European modernity, and therefore, already included within Barr’s interpretation. In the Fourth Framework Programme, for instance, there was a programme entitled ‘Targeted Socio-Economic Research’ (TSER) and in the Fifth Framework Programme there were numerous calls for proposals to carry out socio-economic research related to Information Society Technologies (in the IST Programme) and to other issues of relevance to EU policy. At national level, there are also economic and social research funding councils in most European Countries. However, nowhere in this documentation, as far as I can tell, is any definition offered of ‘socio-economic research’. For the purposes of the RESPECT project, however, it is necessary to have some sort of functional definition. ...Scaling Study Developing and conducting a survey is a very technical process. Any researcher that takes on a process like this must be careful to develop proper and appropriate questions for the survey to collect the most valid and reliable data. Conducting and presenting the survey is just as crucial as the creation of the questions. If either of these areas is neglected or not handled appropriately the entire research process is wasted. The purpose this paper is to critique a survey I created and issued to 10 random individuals. Included in the critique of this survey is a discussion of the reliability and validity of the survey and the results collected. Survey and Content The survey under review is a short eight questions developed to understand general health of individuals through diet and exercise. The survey was completed using two forms of questions. The first type question falls under the definition of a rating scale. “Rating scale is used when participants score an object or indicant without making a direct comparison to another object or attitude” (Cooper, Schindler, 2011, Ch. 12). Under these guidelines individuals were asked to answer questions pertaining to how often they exercise, how often they eat each day, and how often they eat fast food.
