At a young age, this girl is given toys that are seen as feminine, and they promoted a hard to reach ideal of what and who a woman is: “...presented dolls that did pee-pee/and miniature GE stoves and irons,” (Piercy 1123). Then, in adolescence, a fellow student told her she was overweight and her nose disproportionate. In contrast, she was a healthy girl. She was smart, strong, and didn’t have any health complications. In her mind, all people saw were her flaws: “Everyone saw a fat nose on thick legs,” (Piercy 1123). She was told to be alluring, yet shy. She was told to be in shape by exercise and dieting. Too soon, she couldn’t hold back her stress. She cuts off her legs and her nose, only wanting to be as pretty as she possibly could. In death, people commented on how pretty she was, possibly the prettiest she’s ever been: “Doesn’t she look pretty? everyone said,” (Piercy 1124).
