Rebecca Hovatter Mrs. Bickel English II. 5 18 November 2014 12 Angry Men Thesis Paper If prejudice can start a war between brothers, then it definitely can lead 12 different jurors to hating each other in a confined space. 12 Angry Men, written by Reginald Rose, looks at the clash of ideas and opinions in the jury system to come to a unanimous vote to decide if a boy was innocent or guilty of murder to his father. In the play we see different accounts of prejudice. Do people’s backgrounds, acquaintances’ ideas, etc. influence an individual’s ideas? This question brings up the classic argument of nature vs. nurture. Does nature or nurture have more of an influence on a person? Nature lays the base of a person’s being. It’s the DNA and instinct of a person. It tells you if you can roll your tongue or not or, for example, it’s the reason someone has a mental disease. It's the born with instinct's of a person that describes a person's nature. People make the argument that a person’s nature is more of an influence become if someone has a disease, they will be plagued with the effects for their life. Scientists are trying to find “behavioral genes” that explain why a person acts the way they do (decision making, personal views, treatment to others, and any other behavioral attitudes). However, nothing has been found yet that exemplifies these genes. An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older or about one in four adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a year. This can be translated to 57.7 million

people. This is the most evidence a nature supporter could have that would influence a person’s being the most. Nurture is the developmental process of a person. It’s the cause that teachers, psychologists, lawyers, and other specialists have based a part of their career on. The argument is that a person’s environment they grow up in and are surrounded by on a daily basis means more. The tendency to please others makes people act a way. The raising of a human being places a large influence. For example, if a person grows up in a city full of crime with parents that are rarely around or have negative histories, this person could grow up in spite of their parents and city or could grow up to turn out the same. The future of this being has just experienced the effects of nurture. What your environment is (ex. family, schooling, friends, and any other outside influence one i exposed to) can truly lead a person to make certain personal decisions because nurture is the influence of anything on a person. This idea says that nurture can mask a person’s nature and in turn have a greater influence. Not only can we look at nature vs. nurture and the affects it had on the boy in 12 Angry Men but also on the affects it had on each individual juror. In 12 Angry Men, there are 12 jurors trying to decide if this boy killed his father. Many of the jurors are focused on the boy’s background, where he lived, what color skin he is, what he did, etc. It was Juror 8 who had to tell the others that they weren’t discussing the boy’s previous crimes but only this particular one. In many crimes, lawyers, judges, and the jury investigate a person’s mental being and if said person has a, by nature, mental illness. If a person does this very well leads people to do certain things. In a study of crimes committed by people with serious mental disorders, only 7.5 percent were directly related to symptoms of mental illness, according to the American Psychological

Association. That means that the rest of the untested for crimes had to be do to some other cause. This is why the jurors debate the boy’s background and make assumptions. Nature vs. nurture is classic argument that many people debate. Nature is our DNA and born instinct, and nurture is the influence to our development as individuals as we grow. Nurture plays the big role of shaping you as a being all throughout your life, and a person’ s nurture never truly stops growing. The influence of others on us shapes what we think and how we see other people. That influence can be seen in 12 Angry Men when we see that Juror 5 grew up in a bad neighborhood forcing him to say things he did and Juror 3 to respond with the ideas he was raised to believe. This all being effects of our nurture.

Slavery in Ancient Rome

...Slavery in Ancient Rome Rome as far research show had always exploited slaves, however during the early Republic Rome saw its slave population multiply significantly from a series of wars and conquests. This paper will discuss the rights and responsibilities of Roman slaves during the Republican era and early empire. It will also analyze the impact slavery had on Rome’s economic situation as well the impact on roman society and culture. Rome did not always have such an abundance of slaves. It was not until they conquered Corinth and sacked Carthage did they amass a significant amount of slaves. Some authors estimate that the number of slaves reached 300 000-350 000 in a total population of 900 000- 950 000 in Rome during the Augustan era.[1] It is of course impossible to determine the exact amount of slaves during this time, but nevertheless this estimate of slaves is still one third of the population. The Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage mark the beginning of Rome’s “addiction” to slavery. After Rome had consolidated the main land of what is now Italy, this brought them into contact with much greater powers. The first Punic War (264-241 B.C) began when both Rome and Carthage took interest in Sicily.[2] Herodotus notes the significance of this first of many battles by comparing it to the battle of Salamis. He states, “They say too, that the victory of Gelo and Thero in Sicily over Hamilcar the Carthaginians tell out upon the very day that the Hellenes...

12 Twelve Man

...1 Twelve Angry Men: An Analysis of Group Effectiveness The Infrareds Ruth Bradner, Penelope McFarline, Michelle McGregor, Jonathon West VCU ADLT 612 Dr. Terry Carter, Professor 2 Twelve Angry Men: An Analysis of Group Effectiveness Introduction Twelve men with diverse backgrounds are sequestered in a room and are unable to leave until a decision, a weighty one that will either condemn a young man to death or set him free, is made. The twelve strangers are bound to each other, trapped within the confines of four immovable walls, until the goal is achieved. They melt in the humidity of middle summer, which is exacerbated by the room's stuffiness and by the stress of their task. We, the audience, sweat as they grapple with each other and with the responsibility that is theirs to fulfill. One could spend a great deal of time debating if the jurors who comprised the cast of “Twelve Angry Men” (Lumet, 1957) were a group or a team. One could, and we will, cite definitions and descriptions from the literature to justify one conclusion or the other. The questions that are more interesting to us, and that constitute the thesis of this paper, are these: Were the jurors an effective group (or team)? And what factors contributed to group effectiveness? Schwarz (2002) has proposed a Group Effectiveness Model that provides facilitators who work with dysfunctional groups a road map, a way to identify where groups have gone wrong. Schwarz identifies three criteria for judging group success:...

History

...When American schoolchildren are educated about Europe between the years 1936 through 1975, they are taught about the aftereffects of World
War I and about World War II. Europe, in high school history classes, ceases to exist after 1945 and the close of World War II unless, of course, one is learning about the Cold War and the Berlin Wall may be mentioned. They do not learn, however, that World War II era Spain—because Spain was neither an ally or a foe during the war—went through enormous conflict of its own. The three-year Spanish Civil War and the fascist dictatorship that followed are largely kept out of the American history books. Yet, the world is privy to much of its legacy through literature, art, film, and personal memory. Spain certainly remembers three hellish years of war and thirty six years of repression under Generalisimo Fransisco Franco, but how is General Franco remembered by the rest of the world? What legacy did he leave internationally? 2 It is a confused and varied one: to those closest to him he was a husband, father, and statesman; to Hitler, he was an obstacle on the road to world domination; to the Jews who fled from Hitler he was a hero; but to the many Spanish minorities and to his opponents in the Spanish Civil War he was a monster. 3 The answers to the questions posed are addressed in a variety of sources. One of these sources is the book Hitler Stopped by Franco, by Jane and Burt Boyar, who write a relatively straightforward book that explores many...

...ENGLISH HANDBOOK -“Welcome to my evil lair…” -Mr. Braiman Brooklyn High School of the Arts www.mrbraiman.com http://handbook.mrbraiman.com “EVIL” Welcome to my evil classroom lair. In order to become full-fledged evil “minions,” you need to read this handbook carefully. It explains everything you need to know. “English,” as you may know, is shorthand for “English Language Arts.” Being that we are in an Arts school, but one where academics must and always do come first, it is important that we approach the subject as what it is: an art form. How does one study the arts? What exactly do we do when we study drawing, sculpture, music, or dance? Well, anyone who has studied the arts will tell you that studying the arts essentially involves two things: • Learning about, and developing an awareness of and appreciation for, existing works of art in that particular form; • Developing the skills and techniques associated with the art form, in order to create our own works. In the case of language arts, much like any other art form, we will be studying existing works of art (i.e., reading books, stories and poems), and developing the skills to produce our own (i.e., writing). That’s what English Language Arts is. We will also be preparing ourselves for New York State’s Regents Comprehensive Examination in English, which we’ll all be taking in June. This two-day, six-hour, four-part exam requires no specific knowledge or content, but it does require the skills to listen, read,...

Discrimination

...Business Ethics – Term Paper March 21/13 Discrimination Introduction Discrimination is defined as distinguishing something from something else (i.e. don’t hire him because he has no experience). Unjustified discrimination is distinguishing something from something else on a basis that is not justified (i.e. don’t hire him because he is black). The term discrimination commonly replaces the term unjustified discrimination in business, philosophy, psychology and day-to-day community life. In a just and fair society, such as we Canadians aspire to, a job applicant’s race, ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age, orientation, mental ability, or physical condition should not disadvantage them in career choices or job competitions. If a short Asian female firefighter can do the job, she should get the job. Conversely she should not expect to receive concessions that are not available to all; that is in effect also discrimination. Unfortunately, discrimination often arises in business in regards to hiring, job placement, wage, and promotion. Affirmative Action Ideally, discrimination should be of no concern at all; everyone should have an equal opportunity to anything. In a perfect world a hiring manager would not have to think thoughts such as, “They are disabled, they are women, they are aboriginal,” and would only think, “This person will be perfect for the job because….” Unfortunately this may never completely happen. For example if a person in a wheelchair applies...

...through a self-administered questionnaire and an informal conversation. Based from the information provided by 20 purposively selected college gays, it was learned that gayspeak is simply an adaptation of the mainstream language like English, Filipino, and Cebuano. For purposes of shielding from the chasms of the heterosexuals, gays construct their language through simple reversal, syllabic reversal, simple reversal with affixation, clipping with affixation, straight words with affixation, and connotation through images. It was concluded that the spoken discourse of college gays in the campus violates the rules of English grammar yet used by gays for purposes of expressing themselves in a way unrecognizable by the discriminating straight men in highly patriarchal society. INTRODUCTION Centuries ago, Philippine culture openly projected bias against the gays. Biases are often manifested even within the family in which the father, more specifically, would even disown a child who is a gay (Casabal 2008). It was made evident then...

...Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are worthwhile and that your reader genuinely...

...Compare and Contrast Paper Frank A. Daniels JR Liberty University 169567 Thesis In my reading I find that Dr. Crabb is very intriguing a very intellectual writer and has a way of convincing the reader with his philosophies. I will discuss the four perspectives: Goal of Christian Counseling, Basic Concepts, Basic Strategy, and Developing a Counseling Program in the local Church as recorded in Effective Biblical Counseling. Then will Compare and Contrast the assigned articles listed in the course. Goal of Christian Counseling Dr. Crabb, stated, “many of us place top priority not on becoming Christ like in the middle of our problems but on finding happiness. People want to be happy but the paradoxical truth is that you will never be happy if you are concerned primarily with becoming happy. Your goal must be in every circumstance to respond biblically, to put the Lord first, to seek to behave, as He would want you to. The wonderful truth is that as we devote all our energies to the task of becoming what Christ wants us to be, He fills us with joy unspeakable and peace far surpassing what the world offers. We must reject the goal of becoming happy and adopt the goal of becoming more like the Lord” (Crabb, 1977, p20). Most people look for happiness in tangible things that you can feel touch or see and still find that they are coming up short and unhappy after the high has settled...

Filmandnegotiation

...year since I started courses on negotiation and leadership in which I use full-length films as the main pedagogical tool. It is this experience that I would like to talk about here. I will organize my lecture around three points: first, I will describe the course itself and its background; then, I will try to clarify my pedagogical principles; and finally, I will give you a very quick sample of this pedagogy by showing you some extracts from Lost in La Mancha, and I will make a few comments. 1- The course and its background. This course is given at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (the National Graduate School of Telecommunications in Paris). The three sessions on negotiation are fairly modest in size : 12 hours. I built them around three films. The first one is Le souper (The Supper) where we get an idea of the negotiation between Talleyrand and Fouché a few weeks after Waterloo, when France’s whole future is at stake. The meeting as imagined by the author takes place within the context of a typical French high society dinner at the time. It gives me the opportunity to give an introductory course on negotiation. The second film is Lost in La Mancha, the making-of of Terry Gilliam’s film Don Quichotte. The purpose here is to see how the negotiating spirit and methods can apply to leadership and...
