...Nonfiction Reaction Paper ENG/125 Nonfiction Reaction Paper The nonfiction stories I have decided to write about are; “Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone?” by Andrew Lam and “Salvation” by Langston Hughes. Both of these stories are about a significant event in the authors lives in which they choose to write about. “Salvation” is a story about the author trying to find his way into the church and finally see the light or Jesus so his soul will be saved and his sins forgiven. ; “Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone?” was a writing about his mother having a hard time with the American culture and how her son, the author Andrew Lam, will be when he leaves home and how the traditions she raised him on slowly will disappear along with her when she passes along. Judging by the comments I’ve read online, in magazines, and my own experience, expressing an opinion about this identification or anything dealing in child psychiatry will be met with censure from both sides. I was reading an article “Ritalin Gone Wild” in the New York Times, and I felt obliged to write. If you have not read “Ritalin Gone Wild”, I persuade you to do so. In my opinion, I agree with the article except for the mention about “children born into poverty therefore [being] more vulnerable to behavior problems”. Unsurprisingly, the article has fascinated many online detectors. Let us check out this response from the NYT, accusing Dr Sroufe for “blaming parents” for ADD/ADHD. When I read the original article, Dr Sroufe did not do that. Instead, he noted that ADD/ADHD symptoms may not or at all come from a congenital neurological defect or “chemical imbalance”, but that ecological influences may be more significant. He also says that, ADD/ADHD drugs do work; children and adults do perform better on meds, but the successes do fail over time, perhaps a drug answer does not change ecological situation in the first place. American citizens are being put under the false impression that gun homicide rates have gone up in recent years in order to make the situation seem more dire, when in fact the opposite is true. You may have heard about how 32,000 American citizens die every year due to firearms, but what you may not realize is that more than two thirds of the deaths are caused by suicide. This crucial detail is usually glossed over in reports, leaving most citizens unaware. As psychiatry professor Liza Gold explains, "Culturally and historically, suicide has always come with a high level of shame and embarrassment. People don’t want that associated with their families, so when suicides do occur, they don’t list the cause of death or they don’t count suicide as the cause of death." Furthermore, another fact most crowds are unaware of is that the level of gun violence has gone down significantly since the 1990's, with the NPR citing the Pew Research study. Since 1993, gun violence has decreased by 49%. Despite this, another study from Pew Research shows that American citizens are mislead on the situation. In the survey done in 2013, 56% of Americans believed that the number of gun crimes has gone up in the last 20 years, 26% believed that the rates had stayed the same, and a measly 12% correctly knew that the number of gun murders have gone down.
