Influence
Like power, influence deals with the capacity to impact the behaviors of others. Influence, however, arises directly from one’s behavior toward others. There are 8 methods you can use:

Foreman –giving options, being likeable, listening to others

1. Coalition building: seeking alignment with others Asking everyone what they thought when he gave everyone the story about the woman. Comparing kids juror #2 and #8 seeking sympathy to show how kids can be ungrateful #8 Involved everyone in discussion and made changes as suggested (speed it up anyone can walk faster than that) One juror looking at the other juror – did or didn’t the old man see the boy moving out the house? He’s looking to the other juror to agree with him. Then he moves on to shouting. Nudging the juror next to him – tell them will ya

Shouty guy – what’s the matter with you guys? Can’t you see he’s guilty?

2. Consultation – asking and otherwise involving others Picky little points don’t mean anything. You know how these people lie – I don’t have to tell you stereotyping and putting THEM into a different bracket than ‘normal folk’ trying to make people tink I’ve known a couple that are ok but It’s like an exception. Having the opposite effect of what he wanted. Showing that he is prejudiced. Told to exit the discussion. Jury 8 still able to empathize. He’ able to go ti system again and again to say that they are following legal orders (bigger) Put yourself in kids place Supposing you were on trial Foreman letting everyone decide how to do things. #8 asking everyone Has anybody here any idea how long it would take an train train analogy asking questions making them question whether guy could hear it 3. Exchange – trading, cutting a deal with others I bet you $5000 I can remember the movies I saw.

4. Ingratiating – praising before requesting Finest match makers in the world come to NY. Before giving story Are you a salesman? Do you know what the soft sell is? Well you’ve got it believe me – before inserting his own beliefs. And saying that the kid is guilty Nice bunch of guys huh? I don’t mind, beats working. Betting you’ve never been wronger in your life 5. Inspiration – appealing to higher ideals & values

6. Pressure – threatening, intimidating Shouting to jurors telling them to say something. Intimidated by other j #2 to #1 be quiet Juror putting knife on the table to intimidate 8. Other juror slammed similar knife for impact. You’re not gonna change anybody’s mind Screaming at the other guy accusing him of changing vote. Trying to put a guilty man in the chair where he belongs Juror 2 always being loud to try to get others around to his way of thinking until juror had to threaten to ‘lay him out’

7. Reason – appeal to logic and rational thinking Juror 8 being able to walk through the apartment in time. Recreated scene from apartment to visually demonstrate the scene.

Taking facts one and a time. Numbering points. Checking through to make sure juror #8 was in agreeance so far

Juror 2 went through entire story citing what happened as being factual. His logic was that if this is the way it happened it’s only logical that the boy is guilty. Started by saying it wasn’t his personal feelings but that he was just stating facts. Stating it in a matter of fact way Juror 3, 4, 5 – went through rational logical accounts of witness accounts. Looking at past behaviors and drawing logical conclusions

Giving details of the train passing by the second 8. Claiming legitimacy- asserting your position is supported by higher authorities Citing the constitution as his defense stating that the burden of proof is on the prosecution and not on the defense when juror #1 said that no one proved he was innocent As you prepare to view the film, there are several things to keep in mind concerning the operations of the U.S. judicial system and the "task" facing the jury:
Knows the man better than anyone here…..

Multiple jurors Going over and over each detail of the case

8 is more effective because he remains calm, precise, used precise calculations , logical thinking, visual demonstrations

shouty guy less effective and was able to be pushed to threatening which dis-proved him.
Very good at disproving all objections or setting up reasonable doubt,

Very good at going through all the points and creating reasonable doubt.
Respecting everyone whether he agreed with tem or not – now the onus is on him to prove that boy is guilty.
_______________________________________
9. The accused, or defendant, is presumed to be innocent unless proven guilty. The jury must decide "beyond a reasonable doubt" that the defendant is guilty. 10. The verdict must be unanimous. Anything other than a unanimous conclusion on the part of the jury—either guilty or not guilty—will result in a "hung jury." If and when the jury announces that it cannot reach a unanimous decision, the judge will declare the trial to be ended. At that time, the state prosecutor can decide to retry the case with a completely new jury. 11. At the time this film was made—the mid-1950s—juries tended to be dominated by white males. Women were issued automatic exceptions and people of color were excluded because of racial/ ethnic bias or because they tended not to appear on voter registration rolls from which jurors are selected. Those exclusions and biases were eliminated by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1970s. 12. The jury foreman is selected at random, as are the numbers assigned to each juror.

Assignment 1. Review the 8 methods of influence presented in the online lecture. Look for specific examples of the 8 influence techniques among the jurors. 2. A number of jurors attempt to influence the decision-making process. Using the influence framework, explain why the architect (Juror 8) is so much more effective than the others. 3. This is an individual assignment. Your assignment, due no later than Day 7 should be one-page single spaced. Take 2 pages (single space) to answer each of the following: 1. Find an example of 5 of the 8 influence techniques 2. What made Juror 8 so influential? 3. Compare the techniques use by Juror 8 to the techniques used by your own boss. How effective is he/she? 4. Submit your assignment through TurnItIn, using the drop box found in the "Assignments" folder. You can navigate to this folder using the "Assignments" link in the menu on the left side of your screen. 5. We will return to the film next week in our discussion of group dynamics.

The Man Who Was Almost a Man

...Irony of Childish Behaviors in “The Man Who Was Almost A Man” In Richard Wright’s “The Man Who Was Almost A Man”, there are a constant examples of irony that is opposite of its literal meaning in the story. This irony, in which Dave expresses his needs to be acknowledged as a adult, but he does a lot of immature acts. In “A Man Who Was Almost A Man”, Dave acts of manhood worked against him. He goes about trying to get respect in the wrong ways. He wants a gun for respect, he wants to be a real man but his mother keeps his money, and he runs away from his debts, which is something a real man would never do. Wright’s purpose for writing is to not only show how immature Dave is but to show that becoming a man is a lengthy process and t help someone else avoid those same childish acts. The transition from manhood to adulthood is quiet and force to be reckoned with but Dave shows that his childish mind has a lot to accomplish. A gun is merely a piece of metal tube in which bullets are propelled out of and a noise is given off. Dave wants a gun or metal tube for all of the wrong reasons. He believes that if he had a gun or brought a gun his co-workers would no longer treat him like an boy, in which he really is. Dave is only a young man who is trying to find his identity in his little hometown in the South. Every male wants to have power, to be masculine, and respected but if you still have a child mindset, there is no way possible that a person well ever take u serious...

12 Angry Men

...In the beginning of this movie there is a lot of communication going on between all the jurors. When it is came time to a vote on whether or not the victim will be guilty or not there is one man who stands out. During the trial he was observing and taking down notes in his mind about the case. Others were also doing the same thing, but did not take in account how to analyze the situation like the old man did. This vote/tally by the whole group is basically a system. They all use this system to see where they all stand on the verdict. The old man decides to state his individuality because these factors: his beliefs, values and morals. This man has a belief that you cannot just send a young man off to possibly die without having talked about it first. He also made this decision based on the context on the situation. He knew some of the people in the room would be too scared to voice their own opinion.  Others people’s belief though in the room are not in the right place. Some are more worried about a baseball game or money. Others are basing some things off their background such as the one of the other older gentlemen and his issues with his children. Their background experiences all reflect their actions and attitudes during the whole movie. This was also due to the perception of the situation they were in. Their attitudes and values were also a big influence on them during the movie. The old man that first voted not guilty was definitely a leader. He also had very high self-esteem...

Manliness

...Many people think that a boy becomes a man when his facial hair starts to grow out, how much money he makes, and what he starts to wear. A man is not defined by his age or looks. Men can have all the money in the world or looks but that doesn’t necessarily make them a man. Men are not born but men are made and raised. Responsibilities, maturity, and respect for women turn a boy into a man. Many boys grow up fast to take they can take care of their families at a early age. Because of no father figure around boys usually end up the man of the household, and start working. Therefore age never determines when you become a man or not. Many 15 years old take many responsibilities while some don’t know the meaning of responsibilities. A man is responsible for keeping food in the fridge, paying the bills, keeping clothes on, etc. “Being a dad is the most manliest job you will ever have”(144) Many young boys today become dads at a very early age and most of them end up not taking the responsibility of their child. “Fathers have stopped passing down the art of manliness to the next generation”. Many fathers neglect their families and children and let them be on their own. This means not having a male figure around for the little boys. Boys look up to their fathers and want to see a good role model. They need a man figure in their lives to teach them how to be a man. How will a boy learn how to be a man if his own father is not around to teach him about manliness and responsibilities...

Sixth Century Athenian Symposium

...the customs and traditions, my friends and I accepted. We had only heard about what goes on at symposium from older teenagers and among them their experiences varied, as well as their impressions. Needless to say, my friends and I were feeling a mixture of curiosity and fear. Prior to the evening’s festivities, my father had told me about the symposium and the importance of taking part in one within our culture. He had told me that it was an important event in a young man’s life where he learns from what is being discussing by the elder men as well as establishing important contacts that my help as I grew into an adult.4 The symposium was scheduled to begin after sunset.5 All the men, along with my friends and a few other boys my age, assembled in the house’s andron. How I Survived the Passing of My Father

...a couple of things changed for me – my childhood ended, as I saw it, and I now was the man of the house. This feeling of responsibility was new to me as I was the eldest child but very much sheltered from the perspective how life actually was but I was rudely awakened to it. I now felt a responsibility for my mother and her emotional well-being as well as continuing being the big brother to my younger sister that I had already been. I overcame this by learning how to cope better with the stressors of forced manhood via talking with some of my older family members and friends. They offered me valuable advice on how to deal with everything from male-female relationships as well as the unwritten code of conduct as it pertains to men, and Black men in specific. I am incredibly grateful that I have the opportunity to have these folks in my life for that specific season. I’ve also come to realize that the code of conduct as espoused by society towards being a Black man is very interesting yet complex. We are often asked to be strong and powerful yet not be too aggressive or derelict in our responsibilities or actions. I think that every man needs to have role models that they can aspire to be like and to emulate. I am thankful that I serve that role for my young son who looks up to me and my hope is that I can continue to be a good model for him. As a member of a fraternity, I am interested in fostering and building better relationships with my peers and to understand better...

Arguments Against Interracial Dating

...Initially, a male’s physique is what catches my eye first. A tall, muscular built guy with dark brown skin is how I like my potential mates to  look. Though I am not against interracial dating, my preference is African American heterosexual males. With a nice smile and a deep toned voice, I cannot resist. I don’t like dating guys who are exactly my age. I don’t feel as if they are mature enough to handle my intellect. I think I am attracted to guys who are very much like me. Not saying that I don’t enjoy childish play, I just enjoy the company of men who are at least 1 to 3 years older than me. A man of God would be the best thing ever, but as long as he has a relationship with God, I am willing to accept him. At the age of 22 or 23, I don’t expect a guy to have it all together, but I do at least expect them to have a plan for their future. I would like for my mate to have stability; a decent place to stay, a car, and a decent job. I like my partner to show off their masculinity; aggressive, defensive, protective, and providing who doesn’t mind the “heavy lifting,” however, in private, I like to see a...

Pay Discrimination

...Pay Discrimination The article I have chosen to report on is a news article on the recent reversal of pay that women in their 20s have seen with women in this age bracket now reported by official government statics provided by ONS (the Office for national Statistics), to be earning 1.7 percent more than men of the same age in full time work. The article also covers the issues of underpaying to the young, paying under the minimum wage and the issue of female pay discrimination within other age groups. The article is written by the independents economic editor Sean O’Grady and was published on the 9th of December 2010. It has been more than forty years since the order for equal pay and this year is the first time women in any age category have been shown to earn more than men. In the article is suggests that the reason for this is the recent rise in women graduating from university. It then goes on to say that the overall difference in pay is down 2% on 2009 to just over 10%, this is still a very sizable gap but little compared to the recorded 36.5% in 1971. So why has the gap shrunk? Why is there still a large difference despite laws being in place to tackle the difference for 40 years? In this essay I hope to go into depth about these issues alongside others raised in the article such as paying under the minimum wage. It is widely known that women in full time jobs are often held back by having a family. They can be discriminated against and not given a fair chance when...

Abc Class Week 1

...Can you look over this 250 word essay? So for Princeton one of the prompts is: Name someone who inspires you, or something like that. It can only be 250 words, so I tried to keep it short. Is it cliche/cheesy? As an omnipresent force, my Dad symbolizes more than just a man who has brought me into this world. He is instead an emotion or energy that I can feel inside of me always. He is the constant reminder of my duty to uphold the morals of my family, and he is the motivation for accomplishment in my life. Though not with me in the physical sense, his contributions as an emotional force in the sharpening of my character has helped me grow as a confident young man. He is a man I can admire and a man I can wish to be, but more than anything else, he is a man that I can forever know will support me in all my endeavors. As I look forward towards the future I see him as a part of the greater meaning of my life; he will always be another influence in my decisions and a sign that I have chosen the right path. While others may pass through my life, the firm hand with which he guides me will be present always. | | Reply | 10-12-2004, 07:06 AM | #2 | marite Senior MemberJoin Date: Aug 2004Posts: 13,792 | Ilcapo: The response is far too vague; it does not even mention that your father is dead so that what you think is his inspiration is what you believe he would have told you to do, were he alive; this is unless you have been told specific things about him and are being influenced...

A Study of Pay Inequity Between Genders

...A Study of pay Inequity between Genders   Abstract As long as an American woman is putting in the same amount of hours with the same qualifications and experience in the same occupation as an American male, and yet taking home a wage that is any lower, she is not being treated fairly as an equal. Contrary to many arguments, it is unquestionable that a wage gap exists, and while there are various ideas as to the most probable cause, there is no reason why this gap should continue to go uncorrected or unchanged. Our government should take concrete steps to close the gender wage gap because it violates women’s rights and equality. The story begins at a local Radio Shack, it is Friday, payday. As employees open their paychecks, they are awaiting their annual raise. As one employee, Neha opens up her paycheck she finds she has not yet received a raise; she has waited all year for this raise. She is very sad to find she did not receive one. She begins to think maybe she did something wrong. She starts to think back through the year, and cannot seem to come up with any solutions as to why she did not receive one. She worked especially hard that year in hopes to receive a good raise and felt she deserved to be recognized for it. In the break room she overheard her co-worker John bragging to their colleagues about his second raise. Now John is making a dollar twenty five more per hour than her even though they both have been working at Radio Shack for...

The Socially Engineered Western Male Identity

...to be able to afford retirement. Historically the corner stone of the foundation of this financial enterprise has been the western male. Ironically this resource has been exploited in the media and has become easy prey for both liberal and conservative power brokers. Keeping him productive and under control, even at the expense of confusing the issues, is key to maintaining the status quo of a system on the verge of imploding. Richard Setter’s study: "Fathers' Accounts Of Struggle And Growth In Early Adulthood”, found: “Securing attachment to the labor force is central to both the process of becoming an adult, and the provider obligations of fatherhood. This task is particularly challenging for men from low-income and working-class backgrounds. The work-related responsibilities men carry, and are expected to carry, bring significant strain. Fathers talked in pointed, and even painful, ways about their struggle to find time for children in the face of their work...

Ohh Yahh All Night

...actions at all times will affect his life forever, he will man up. This realization is not always found easily, and sometimes not at all. Because of incorrect notions about the habits of men, many youths are lead into a false sense of manliness which hinders them in their quest to make the leap to adulthood. In different cultures, boys become men at different ages, and in different ways. In Germany, many boys take part in an initiation ceremony called a Jugendweihe at the age of fourteen, where they receive their identity papers and are "addressed with the formal pronoun Sie (as opposed to the informal due)" ("Jugendweihe"). In Finland, boys ages fifteen to eighteen go to "root camps" called Juurileiri where they "get familiar with the way of life, world view, beliefs and traditions of ancient Finns for a week through discussions, handicraft, drama, and skills necessary for life in primitive conditions." ("Secular coming of age ceremony"). And in China, a ceremony called Guan Li is practiced where boys at the age of twenty are given a style name, which is a "symbol of adulthood and respect" ("Chinese style name"). The point is, that no matter what part of the world, or how it is done, when boys get and appreciate the respect that gives them the power to govern over their own lives, they become men. But in many cultures that do not have a specific initiation to adulthood, boys do not always obtain and even more rarely appreciate that...
