Overall, our hypothesis is supported by the data collected. In the alkalinity category, the final amount was 40, while for our control, the amount was between 0 and 40. The ph was exactly the same, while the softness was only slightly higher. The total amount of iron was also the same. One major difference that came from the test strips was the copper reading. Copper is detected by testing strips through a reaction where copper ions combine with 2,2’-biquinoline in a solution of alcohol and water to form a purple-red substance. 2,2’ -biquinoline is a weak acid used to determine the amount of protein in a substance. While Alum (KAl(SO4)2·12H2O), contains no copper, the testing strips could have reacted with it in the same way that it reacts
