The molecule is effective as a sunscreen and preventing damage to our skin due to the most damage to our skin is done by the high energy UV rays which can cause burns to the epidermis and can damage the DNA of a cell in the lower levels of the skin which can cause a cancer to form. In an experiment completed in 2000 the safety of this molecule as a sunscreen was questioned due to it being found to be toxic to dermal skin cells in mice in lower concentrations than were found in many commercial sunscreens (10). Although in more subsequent studies on both fully grown mice rather than cells and on humans it has been noted that the molecule cannot penetrate the skin enough to cause any significant damage to any dermal skin cells meaning that the mice in the original study must have had cuts or injuries that lead to the molecule poisoning the dermal layer of the skin (11).
