Cven 2101 Report

...Processing cement Mining and Quarrying The production of cement begins with the extraction of raw materials via mining and quarrying. Once a suitable large deposit has been found, the production of cement begins. Firstly the raw material, limestone, clay, iron ore, is blasted or drilled into depending on the depth of the deposit. The most central materials such as limestones will generally be mined on site and secondary materials will generally be mined on a nearby quarry. Whilst blasting any raw materials, site managers need to ensure that the best routine of blasting is practiced so that dust, vibration and noise pollution are kept to a minimum^(1). The blasted rocks will most often be of varying diameters and must be transported to a crushing plant. Crushing plants are set up close of the mining sites to reduce transportation costs and increase productivity and efficiency. Backhoe loading truck with blasted material ^(4) Crushing and Grinding The raw materials firstly go through a screening process which ensures only the required materials are crushed and no time and energy is wasted in processing waste constituents. Once the excessively large rocks are crushed into the desired size, the next step is...

Econ 2101 Problem Set 6

...Econ 2101 - Hovander Problem Set 6 - Solutions 1) Define the hypothesis of (eventually) diminishing marginal product both mathematically and verbally. Does this hypothesis hold in the short run or the long run? Explain. The long run is defined as a period of time sufficiently long so that all inputs to production can be freely varied. In contrast, the short run is a period of time sufficiently short so that at least one input is fixed (cannot be varied). For simplicity, let’s make the standard assumption that the variable input in the short run is labor and proceed by defining the hypothesis in terms of labor. The hypothesis of eventually diminishing marginal product states that as we increase labor while holding all other inputs fixed, we will eventually reach a point where the additional output gained with each increase in labor gets smaller and smaller. (e.g. the 5th baker increases output by 3 loaves, the 6th baker by 2 loaves, the 7th baker by 1.) Since the hypothesis is regarding what we expect to see when we vary one input while holding others fixed, this hypothesis is relevant in the short run and not in the long run. Mathematically, the marginal product of labor is MPL = q( L, K ) . L Under the hypothesis of eventually diminishing marginal product (of labor), the following will eventually hold:  2 q( L, K ) 0. L2 (Again, note that this is a partial derivative, so we are hypothesizing this will be true when capital is held fixed, a short-run situation...

Tube Feeding Prolonging Life

...Abstract This paper is written to discuss the ethical dilemma we come across when asking our self whether or not we should place a tube feeding in a patient with a history Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Will this prolong the patients’ life or just the inevitable death? Most often a decision needs to be made regarding the placement of a tube feeding. The question is not initiated by the patient themselves. This is the reason why educating our patients are so important. In this paper I will discuss how important the role of the healthcare professional plays in advocating for a patient. To help answer this ethical dilemma several issues will be explored. I will focus on the seven principles of ethics, education, utilitarianism, top-down theory alternate treatment options. Will Tube Feedings Prolong Life? While working with the majority of geriatric population, we frequently come across patients with Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The most common problem in these patients is the inability to swallow as well as the patients are failure to thrive. Hint: Read the questions carefully and be sure that what you write answers the questions. Many times students give correct information in an answer but that information is not the answer to the question. 1. Refer to the article How Toyota Lost Its Way. a. From an ERM perspective, identify and briefly discuss two types of ERM risks. [4 points] 1.) Operational risk: An example of operational risk would be how Toyotas reputation for designing high quality cars has been damaged. It was damaged due to the dangers of the defective parts that were manufactured. Poor customer service also applies due to foreign communication issues where feedback would take too long to travel back and forth between countries. The slow response resulted in a $16.4 million dollar fine. 2.) Hazard risk: An example of a Hazard risk would be that Toyota is liable for the health and safety of the customers that got into an accident due to the car’s defective parts that were manufactured. This resulted in a number of lawsuits and fatal injuries. b. For each risk you identify, indicate if it is a pure or speculative risk. Justify your answer in both cases. [4 points] 1.) The operational risk mentioned would be...

Interrelationship of Financial Statements

...Interrelationship of Financial Statements There are four basic financial statements produced that provide important information on the financial stability of an organization. These four statements are the income statement, statement of owner’s equity, balance sheet, and the statement of cash flow. Each statement works independently, but each of the four statements is connected directly or indirectly. The net income statement is prepared in order to prepare the owner’s equity statement. After the owner’s equity statement is prepared it is useful to find the cash position is at the end of each period. Because cash is reported as a current asset on a balance sheet information is needed to prepare the statement of cash flow. With these three pieces of information a balance sheet can then be prepared. Each statement provides specific amounts that need to be plugged in to the balance sheet. The income statement shows both Target and Walmart showed an increase in total revenue and gross profit for 2010-2011. There was also an increase of net sales and earnings. There was also an increase of earnings per share for both companies. Walmart reported a first quarter earnings per share of $0.88 a three cents increase above the company’s guidance and First Call consensus estimate (Walmart FY 11 First Quarter Earnings Exceed Guidance and First Call Consensus, 2011). Target reported an increase of earnings per share of 10% to 82 cents. The cash flow statements for both companies indicate...
