3 Most Damaging Words you can tell your Son

Rationale
In our current unit, we are focused on the topic of “Representation of Masculinity in the media” and how it is portrayed much differently to what it actually is. I will be writing as an analyst but also a parent who has gone through this time of where masculinity is the key to your success.
Through this written task, the aim is to inform the readers “3 most damaging words you can tell your son” and it how it affects the children. The intended audience for this textual analysis would be parents who try and tell their children to grow up and stop whining. This type of analysis could be found online particularly on blogs that have a direct link to the video.
In my written task, logos is the most effective stylistic device. For example, the statement “90% of students wrote pain and anger,” as a feeling they have oppressed due to societies influence on them. This statement makes the reader aware of the troubles they are putting their children though in order to raise them, as society wants them to turn out, engaging them to think of their past encounters with their children.
The stimulus text for this piece was a three minute video titled “the 3 most damaging word to tell your son,” as it was a direct relationship with our current unit of representation of masculinity in the media. Another stimulus text that I looked at was a blog site to find the conventions into writing a blog article.

Written Task

Over the course of countless decades, we’ve seen what is wanted out of the women, but lets look at the flip side, what does society expect from the males and the way this expectation has shaped their development. Through this textual analysis of this three minute video titled “ The 3 most damaging words you can tell your son,” we see what kids have been told i.e. “Be a man” “ Grow some balls”. This 3 minute video is subjected to be viewed by everyone but in particular to the men who aren’t really the men that society wants them to be.
In the opening 30 seconds of this clip, we see images of hundreds of young men and teenagers being told the three most damaging words, “be a man.” We see from a very young age that kids have been told to hide their feelings, hide their emotions because they say all of this makes you weak and if they do ever show their feelings out in public, these kids are being tormented by these three powerful words, “Be a man.” These three words, although small, can destroy a child’s confidence as they start to second guess every move that they are going to make. These children aren’t left to grow up in a free society where they can become their own person, rather they follow trends, trends that have been put up by the society. Through these “trends,” the child’s development into a unique person gets hindered.
Michael Kimmel, who is a sociologist and educator, says that United states has “constructed” an “ideal masculinity” that makes young boys feel “insecure” about their personal masculinity and thus the reason why young men, teens, go on to prove this ideal masculinity. This statement that Kimmel makes is true in the sense that teenagers go out to prove themselves to the society that they are the real man, they are the one people should respect and follow around, and this is what has become of American High Schools. The fight to be on top of the food chain. This is the reason kids get bullied in high school because they show something that society doesn’t want to see, a type of masculinity that has no place in society because of its weakness.
The video goes on to say that when everything’s normal, when everything is going good, guys will be the closest of people, but when things start to get rough, everything just falls apart and its as if you’re on your own. All a guy is asking for is closeness, but through asking for closeness, they unintentionally put on this mask which doesn’t show their feelings and keeps them hidden in a jar waiting to explode. This just shows us that if you give up your masculinity, chances are that you’ll be on your own, and that you’ll miss what you really wanted which is “closeness”.
Ashanti Branch tells us that kids wake up every morning and prepare their “masks” on how they will be walking to school, putting on their swagger, but continues on to say that a lot of them just “don’t know how to take that mask off.” In a survey, 90% of students wrote down something that they don’t want to show; which is, anger and pain. All of these feelings are locked up deep within trying to break through the thick skin of the mask that shows your masculinity. It just shows us that teenagers of this day and age are so pressurized to “be a man” that they are willing to harm themselves to be “respected.”
We live in a time when boys don’t value “caring, relationships, empathy,” people are going to go crazy. Boys are more likely to act out and become aggressive often leading to multiple infringements. People don’t see this as a society issue, rather they see it as misconduct, or an oppression or they just think that they are “bad kids.” But the truth is that its societies expectation of what a real man is that’s causing all these problems. Students who have spoken out say that they have had suicidal thoughts as early as 6th grade and felt alone for a really long time and had the feeling of taking their own life. “ Everyday 3 or more boys commit suicide in the US.” This is an astounding number of kids who have failed to live up to societies expectation of being a man and eventually ended up taking their own lives. People resort to these measures only because they feel ashamed or humiliated to live in a society that doesn’t accept them for who they are because they might be more in touch with their feminine side and don’t put on the mask of masculinity.
Every teenager goes through this process of being told to “man up” and that nobody should disrespect you and this is how you handle it as a man to earn respect. Well respect leads to violence as they are trying to show their dominance over the other through the means of violence or bullying. As a society, you are failing all the boys out there telling them to “be a man.” Over this 3 minute video we get an insight of what a boy is living through in this day and age. Society is hampering the creativity in the younger peoples brain and wants to make everyone the same instead of having billions of unique people, making them wear this false mask every single day of their lives.

Analysis - Baby Storm

...opinions in general. Therefore Witterick’s receivers are the people who read about her family in the first place. The article is written in long sentences with a fairly complicated language. The language function is not directive, because the sender, Kathy Witterick, is not trying to make her receivers change their way of raising children, though obviously, she believes it would be the wisest thing to do. Nor is it informative because Witterick does not make use of statistics or hard facts, and it is not written in a formal vocabulary. Witterick uses a metaphor on page 3, line 32, ‘In my heart of hearts, I squirm when my son picks a dress from the rack…’ to let the receivers know it is not an all together easy decision to let her son wear whatever he likes, (though, she knows it is the right thing to do). The figurative language, the extensive use of adjectives and the strongly positively/negatively connoting words all point to the expressive language function, and the fact that it is an argumentative text focused on expressing the sender’s attitude confirms that. All through the text Witterick is very honest about everything, which assures the receiver that she is not ashamed of her opinions. She uses the rhetorical modes ethos when she refers to the knowledge her job-experience gives her, and when she makes it clear that she is a mother with three children who knows by experience...

Parental Gender Roles

...Shameia Gatewood 4 December 2012 Parental Gender Roles Image this; your significant other and you are blessed with a beautiful baby boy. Because of a health reason the man in the relationship cannot partake in the work force and results with the woman bringing the family income. The man, in turn, is a stay at home father and raises his son as such while the mother is more distant. Is it safe to say that your family’s house hold will be the reason for your son being homosexual? Or is safe to say that your son’s homosexuality isn’t a result of your family’s way of life but that your family’s way of life is not of God due to the lack of gender roles? The presence of or lack of parental gender roles and stereotypes have an effect on a developing child. Concerning the debate over the necessity of parental gender roles, I support the position that parental gender roles are unnecessary while raising children. I stand against the opposing position that parental gender roles are necessary and that the child will be hindered without them. In the first section of this paper, I will explain the first opposing argument, which states that parental gender roles are a necessity in the Christian faith. I will disprove this argument by stating that the Holy Bible has not been proven to withhold un-tampered words from the Lord. In the second section, I will examine the second opposing argument, which states that the lack of parental gender roles will create sex role insecurity and homosexuality...

Water Baptism

...the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). It is obvious that if we do not properly understand or practice baptism, we are in danger of neglecting a very important desire of our Lord and Savior. Understanding the Bible’s teaching concerning water baptism is also important because we have an obligation to ensure that new converts to Christ understand the biblical view of baptism and its significance to their relationship with Christ. It would be very unfortunate for any believer to experience water baptism without really understanding its meaning. Finally, it is important to discuss this issue because there are a number of disagreements within Christianity related to baptism. Some of these are relatively minor, but others are extremely important and are worth some discussion. Section A will first discuss some introductory matters regarding the meaning of the word “baptism” and the different kinds of baptism in the New Testament (NT). Section B will cover specifically what the Bible teaches concerning the purpose, recipients, and method of water baptism. Finally, Section C will address some of the more controversial issues such as the place of baptism in salvation and infant baptism. A. The Biblical and Historical Background of Water Baptism 1. What does the word “baptism” mean? The Greek root word from which the NT derives the word “baptism” is bapto. The New...

Teachings of Paul

... Foundations of Ethics: The Life and Teachings of Paul Professor Kier 2 November 2013 With all the ills of society it is difficult to choose one. As different generation flourish, new social issues arise. The teaching of Paul can encompass and relate to most, if not all issues in today's society. For this essay I will focus on the issue of bullying. This particular issue has received some much needed attention in recent times and has even developed into a school program in many states. However, this is not a new issue; and in fact can be traced backed to biblical times. "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV). So what exactly is a bully? "One who is habitually cruel to others who are weaker" (Merriam, 2013). Bullying can be either physical or emotional in nature. Within that definition there are numerous forms that bullying can manifest. Bullying can take place at work from a boss, from a preacher in church, a parent at home, or in school. The remainder of this essay will focus on bullying in school and the victims it affects. As I researched this topic I was astounded by some of the statistics that have been compiled on bullying in our schools. For instance, 160,000 children miss school every day out of "fear of being attacked or intimidated...

King Lear (to Be Finished)

...In the light of your critical readings how far areLear and Macbeth tragic protagonists? Example intro Normally, the common hero would be a character embodying megalopsychia. However, both Lear and Macbeth are conventionally tragic figures, even displaying anti-heroic qualities. Aristotle’s “Poetics” suggests that a tragic protagonist has greatness which is readily evident in the play. The Victorian critic A.C. Bradley picks up Aristotle’s notion to contend and mentions that although the protagonist is a person of greatness, they are not perfect and contain a tragic flaw which can lead to his downfall. Unlike most tragic protagonists, Lear’s fall occurs early in the play when he decides to express his “darker purpose” to Gloucester by dividing the kingdom between his three daughters. Firstly, this rash decision implies Lear’s downfall and prepares the audience for what is to come. Secondly, this would have alarmed a Jacobean audience who would remember how the question of succession had loomed large during the reign of Elizabeth 1. However, Lear does not show many noble attributes before his fall when he loses his temper at Cordelia and he tells her he will, “disclaim all my paternal care,” because she refuses to flatter him with praises and love. This is different to Macbeth who is seen as “brave” and “noble” in the early stages of the play due to killing the rebel, Macdonwald, and fighting off an attack from the Norwegians. Example 2 1. Throughout literary history, there...

Bible Explained

...encroached into children's cartoons, books, magazines and videos! "Living in sin" is now par for the course. People refer, not to husbands or wives, but to "significant others." They speak of "satellite relationships" rather than affairs. Perversions have been downgraded to "personal sexual expressions." What was once shameful is now acceptable. Why is sex promoted so extensively? Because sin is pleasurable, and sex sins are particularly so. Moses chose to forego the "passing pleasures of sin" (Hebrews 11:25) for a greater ultimate reward and pleasure. Unaware of their glorious potential, the people of this world are busy "serving various lusts and pleasures" (Titus 3:3). Though we may not engage in sex sins, this barrage of innuendo and flagrant sensuality can leave us very jaded. Such an assault can deaden our resistance. We can find ourselves losing sight of God's purpose for the seventh commandment and...

But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. Company Stuggle with Ethical Issues

...The Coca-Cola Company Struggles with Ethical issues Dr. Albrani University BUS 508 July 20, 2012 Delineate the ethical issues and dilemmas the company faced. The following is a series of alleged misconduct and questionable behavior affecting Coca-Cola stakeholders. The first ethical issue or dilemma the company faced is the contamination scare which is perhaps the most damaging of Coca-Cola cries- and the situation that every company dreads-began in June 1999, when about thirty Belgian children became ill after consuming Coca-Cola products. Although the company recalled the product, the company eventually determined that the illnesses were the result of a poorly processed batch of carbon dioxide. Questions about Coca-Cola’s market dominance started government inquiries into its market tactics. Because most European countries have very strict antitrust laws, all firms must pay close attrition to market share and position when considering joint ventures, mergers, and acquisitions. During the summer of 1999, Coca-Cola became very aggressive in the French market. As a result, the French government responded by refusing to approve Coca-Cola’s bid to purchase Orangina, a French beverage company. French authorities also forced Coca-Cola to scale back its acquisition of Cadbury Schweppes, another beverage maker. Moreover, Italy successfully won a court case against Coca-Cola over anticompetitive prices in 1999, prompting the European...

William Backus

..."THINK ON THESE THINGS" (Philippians 4:8) A Critique of Telling Yourself the Truth, by William Backus & Marie Chapian and The Lies We Believe, by Chris Thurman Much current "Christian" counseling is heavily rooted in Freud, promoting archaeological digs into the hidden recesses of one's past and strong encouragement to see oneself as a victim of the sins of others. In contrast to this increasingly popular approach, other Christian authors have opted for the cognitive techniques developed primarily by Albert Ellis, founder of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).1 Two key examples are Telling Yourself the Truth and The Lies We Believe (abbreviated as TYT and LWB). Both Backus and Thurman give credit to Ellis for his ideas. However, it should be noted at the outset that Ellis is an aggressive atheist who believes that religious faith is grounded in "irrational" ideas and is evidence of mental instability. (See Discernment Publications' critique of Ellis in "Exposing the Roots" series.) At first glance, the cognitive approach may appear consistent with biblical teachings about renewal of the mind. Personal responsibility is a critical emphasis, in opposition to the prevalent "victim" theory that permeates too much modern counseling. However, as we shall explore more fully, there is nevertheless a wide chasm between the REBT of Albert Ellis and scriptural truth. In addition to Albert Ellis, Thurman quotes and credits M. Scott Peck, a popular author who espouses New Age theology...

The purpose of this study was to shed light on the types of issues that employees are reluctant to raise, and identify why employees sometimes decide to remain silent rather than voice their concerns. We interviewed 40 employees and found that most had been in situations where they were concerned about an issue but did not raise it to a supervisor. Silence spanned a range of organizational issues, with several of our respondents indicating that they did not feel comfortable speaking to those above them about any...
