Diamond Foods, Inc.: Anatomy and Motivations of Earnings Manipulation

...Diamond Foods, Inc.: Anatomy and Motivations of Earnings Manipulation Mahendra R. Gujarathi ABSTRACT: Diamond Foods is America’s largest walnut processor specializing in processing, marketing, and distributing nuts and snack products. This real-world case presents financial reporting issues around the commodities cost shifting strategy used by Diamond’s management to falsify earnings. By delaying the recognition of a portion of the cost of walnuts acquired into later accounting periods, Diamond Foods materially underreported the cost of sales and overstated earnings in fiscal 2010 and 2011. The primary learning goal of the case is to help students understand the anatomy and motivations of earnings manipulation. Specifically, students will have the opportunity to (1) apply the FASB’s Conceptual Framework to a real-world context, (2) determine the nature of errors and compute their numerical effects on financial statements, (3) understand motivations for earnings management and actions needed for managing earnings of future years, (4) explain the anatomy of financial reporting fraud by reconstructing journal entries, (5) prepare comparative financial statements for retroactive restatements, (6) explain the rationale for clawback provisions in compensation contracts, and (7) understand the difference between the real and accrual-based earnings management. Keywords: earnings management; financial statement fraud; restatements; error correction; clawback provision; Conceptual Framework...

...THE ECONOMIC DIMENSIONS OF GLOBALIZATION CHAPTER 2 Chapter 2 The economic dimensions of globalization While the globalization process is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon, some of its most visible and influential aspects are economic in nature. This chapter contains an analysis, from a global standpoint, of major trends in trade, investment, finance, macroeconomic regimes and international labour mobility. This analysis covers a long period in history, from the last quarter of the nineteenth century to the present, and is structured according to the successive phases of globalization identified in the preceding chapter. The first section focuses on the development of trade and investment flows among the principal regions of the world, with emphasis on the variable relationship between the expansion of trade and economic growth, the emergence of integrated production systems underpinning the operations of transnational corporations, the primary challenges faced by developing countries as a result of these global trends and the creation of an international institutional framework in the area of trade. The second section contains an analysis of the most important changes that have taken place in international finance and macroeconomic regimes. After reviewing major historical developments in this area, the study focuses on the volatility and contagion which have characterized capital flows in the third phase of globalization, and finally analyses the magnitude and...

...Executive Summary This report aims at providing an overall analysis of the repayment behavior of the SME loan borrowers of Brac Bank Limited. Before going to the analysis, it is mandatory to know something about the organization, its core products that it offers to its customers; about the SME loan, its classifications and the whole of its process starting from loan sanction to recovery and closing of the loan. That’s why, first of all, I made an overview of the organization, BRAC bank Limited, where I had completed my internship program. Here I tried to focus the bank’s history of origination, its mission and vision, major departments and business units and major products and services. Then I said something about Asset Operations Department, the department where I was to perform my job responsibility. SME is the next section where I gave my concentration. Here I focused on the terms and conditions of giving SME loan, enterprise selection criteria and documentation. Then talked about the procedure of SME loan where I delineated the sanction, disbursement, repayment and closing of SME loan. After talking about the whole process of SME loan, I made an attempt to analyze the repayment behavior of SME loan borrowers. For this end in view, I have collected information about 20 SME borrowers. Then I have chosen eight major variables which have an impact on the recovery rate of SME loan. That is, these are the variables which may change the repayment behavior of SME borrowers...

...WOMEN DEVELOPMENT AND NATIONAL POLICY ON WOMEN IN NIGERIA Olubunmi Aderemi Sokefun Abstract This paper discusses the document on women in Nigeria (National Policy on Women). Several past administrations in this country have treated women issues and affairs with calculated levity: Carefully side - tracking or blatantly refusing to accord it the necessary attention. It is now a thing to gladden the hearts of all women of Nigeria that, "after four attempts by four former heads of Nigeria's Government," Chief Obasanjo's administration finally granted government recognition to women's issues in this country. The official document .on Human Rights' issues as it relates to Nigerian women; this document is known as the NATIONAL POLICY ON WOMEN. This paper therefore focuses on the document which promises to bring delight to the heart of every woman in this country. Introduction When late Mrs. Olufunmilayo Ransome Kuti joined the vanguard team as the only nationalist and activist during the early struggle for Nigerian independence, hardly did .anybody realize then that she had a dream, a clear vision of a future Nigerian woman, that vision was crystal clear in her heart, and like a pivot, it stood firmly on three stand posts-known today as women's rights, women emancipation and women empowerment.. . Mrs. Olufunmilayo Ransome-Kuti later joined by some educated women of like minds, fought daringly and relentlessly for these three .pivotal goals of women emergency and relevance in the socio-political...
