He bought food for an upcoming family BBQ; ground beef for hamburgers, a couple of steaks, and the ingredients for making potato salad. When he left the store, he put his groceries in the trunk and stopped by the sports outlet store to pick up a Frisbee and croquet set. It took about 10 minutes at the sports store, and then Jeremiah headed home to prepare the food. He was concerned that it had been too hot in the car, but everything was still cold when he got home. Jeremiah took the groceries home and put everything in the refrigerator. The meat fit well on the top shelf, right above the potato salad ingredients. Later on, he got the groceries out to prep everything for the BBQ. He cooked the potatoes and used a sharp knife to trim some excess fat off of the raw steaks. Then he cut up the rest of the vegetables for the potato salad with the sharp knife on a cutting board. Jeremiah formed the hamburger patties, seasoned the steaks, and finished making the potato salad. With only about 45 minutes to go before leaving for the BBQ, Jeremiah left everything sitting out on the counter while he showered and got ready. When he arrived at the BBQ, he set the potato salad on the picnic table and went to grill the steaks and burgers. He cooked both to about medium doneness, meaning both were pink in the......

...Previous Page Table of Contents Next Page 2.3. Conducting a feasibility study 2.3.1. Introduction 2.3.2. Market analysis 2.3.3. Technical feasibility 2.3.4. Financial feasibility 2.3.1. Introduction Aspiring entrepreneurs may have an idea about the type of fruit or vegetable product that they would like to make. This can come from seeing others successfully producing a food and wanting to copy them or from talking to friends and family members about products that they think they could make. However, an idea for a business is not a sufficient reason to begin production straight away, without having thought clearly about the different aspects involved in actually running the business. Too often, people invest money in a business only to find out later that there is insufficient demand for the product or that it is not the type that customers want to buy. To reduce this risk of failure and losing money, potential producers should go through the different aspects of running their business in discussions with friends and advisers before they commit funds or try to obtain a loan. This process is known as doing a feasibility study and when the results are written down, the document is known as a business plan. Conducting a feasibility study need not be difficult or expensive, but the most important aspects should all be taken into account to ensure that potential problems are addressed. These are summarised in the Feasibility Study Checklist in Appendix III and are...

...global strategy with colleagues in a Global Management course at the MBA program. I refer to the following as ‘Three ways to gain competitive advantage by competing globally’ 1 – Looking for the best location in the world to lower costs or achieve other production or resource advantage that allows for greater rewards. The real managerial decision is where to locate activities, or which country is best suited for which activity? According to the activities and spread of resources, an organization could concentrate activities in a few countries or disperse activities to many countries. The key is to look for the places that will give each activity more efficiencies and that when laced together with the other organizational activities will help create competitive advantage. 2 – To transfer the source of current advantage/competitive knowledge efficiently from local to global markets. The efficient transfer of competitive advantage across nations helps to achieve larger competencies and capabilities, and to further dominate a particular area across the global market. Think of how Coca-Cola’s awesome distribution system in America was copied in foreign markets; the company went from dominating the distribution locally to dominating the distribution of soft drinks globally. 3 – To organize and coordinate organizational activities between different markets in a way that domestic competitors cannot has a great potential to be a source of competitive advantage because the......

Feasibility Study

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION AND SCOPE OF THE STUDY A. Introduction Organizing a business, needs a thorough investigation and research. A Feasibility study is the most efficient one for it examines and ponders all aspects of the business. Pizza, as we know it today is a bread crust covered with a tomato base and then flavored with other toppings. Most of us think of pizza as an Italian food and most of us are right. The word "pizza" means "pie" and is a derivative of the Roman term "picea". The Italians were also the first to use tomatoes on their pizzas. The real explosion in the popularity of pizza took place in the 1094’s; during WWI U.S. troops stationed in Italy had their first taste of pizza. When they arrive home they brought with them an appreciation for this great tasting food, and the growth of the U.S. pizza consumption began and today pizza is one of the most favorite food of many Filipinos, according to European nutrition research on the eating habits of people with cancer of the mouth, esophagus, throat or colon, showed those who ate pizza at least once a week had less chance of developing cancer. B. Name and Location of the Firm A business name is one of the most essential things to be prepared in starting a business. PIZZAPA came from the words, pizza and pasta which serve as the specialty of our business. Aside from that the reason why we choose that name “PIZZAPA” because it is originated from the word “Pizza pa” (pizza + isa pa = PIZAPA) so that......

The final market research results had arrived, and it was time to make a decision on launching the product. In 2006, Eckstein, a brand manager, had led the introduction of Cucina Fresca, a fresh whole grain pasta meal kit sold through supermarkets. By the end of 2007, sales had reached $23 million, making it the most successful product launch in company history. However, growth had slowed in 2008 as competitors began offering similar products. Sustaining a competitive edge in the fresh Italian food category required continual innovation and, as a result, TruEarth had invested heavily in its pizza offering. Eckstein observed: We were aggressive in launching Cucina Fresca. We made a significant investment in new manufacturing equipment and the distribution infrastructure required to get fresh food to shelves quickly. Being a small company competing against Nestle and Kraft is not easy, but we do not make rash decisions. The success of Cucina Fresca was a calculated risk based on significant research. We think we can achieve similar success with pizza, but we will need to take a hard look at the numbers. Company Background TruEarth was founded in 1993 in St. Louis, Missouri, by Gareth DeRosa, a young entrepreneur. Unfine Richardson Case

...Issue: The core issue Unifine Richardson (UR) faces is their sole honey supplier, Harrington Honey (HH), will run out of Chinese honey in a little over a month because the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently found traces of chloramphenicol (a banned antibiotic associated with causing a sometimes-fatal blood disorder) and rejected the contaminated honey. Until China finds a way to detect contaminated honey, Unifine Richardson cannot sell any of its current Chinese-Canadian blend. Because of the CFIA’s findings, the global supply of honey will decrease by 20%, thus causing an increase in price. Harrington Honey will not be able to maintain the honey stream. The price of honey, globally, has already been on a steady incline (Exhibit 2) and the shortage will further intensify this trend. Another issue UR is facing is that there is also an uneven relationship between the two companies. Harrington Honey is well aware of this and is using this to its advantage by not offering better choices to UR. Additionally, 80% of UR’s honey operations are tied to one major customer, and this customer has tough standards. As stated earlier, Unifine Richardson has approximately one month of honey inventory left and it has to make a decision based on the available options presented by Harrington Honey. Analysis: Unifine Richardson buys about one million pounds of honey annually. The world supply of honey has decreased by about 20%. Currently, the company pays $1.08 per pound for...

Social entrepreneurship is a term in search of a good definition. The current use of the term seems vague and limitless; it needs boundaries to demarcate its function. The lack of a common definition hinders research and raises questions about which social or profit-making activities fall within the spectrum of social entrepreneurship. To become an important stream in the entrepreneurship literature, social entrepreneurship needs to be properly defined and it requires a theoretical framework that links it to the theory of entrepreneurship. This article builds on the literature to define social entrepreneurship, discusses the boundaries of socially-oriented entrepreneurial activities, and positions the social entrepreneur in the spectrum of entrepreneurship. Introduction Most economists and academics support the notion that entrepreneurship is becoming a crucial factor in the development and well-being of societies. Whether the entrepreneurial activities are practiced in factor-driven,......
