A Study on Semantic Features of Purposive Adjuncts in English and Vietnamese

...A STUDY ON SEMANTIC FEATURES OF PURPOSIVE ADJUNCTS IN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE Le Thi Bich Hanh University of Foreign Languages, The University of Danang Email: lebichhanh_dn@yahoo.com ABSTRACT Having a good guide to translate appropriately English purposive adjuncts (PAs) into Vietnamese and vice versa has become monumentally necessary. So, in this study, we would like to compare and contrast English and Vietnamese PAs in terms of their semantic features in meaningful interactional situations in the strong belief that using appropriate PAs, writers and speakers can reduce the negative meanings of their sentences and increase the acceptability of the readers and hearers in communication. In terms of theory, the study focuses on identifying the similarities and differences in the uses of adjuncts to express purposes and hence finding the cultural factors affecting those choices. In practice, the study hopes to provide some implications in language teaching and learning as well as translating. The practical information in the research can raise language users’ awareness of the subtle differences between the uses of PAs in both languages so that they can fulfill their communicative purpose in real life. Key words: purposive adjuncts; purposive subordinators; semantic features; compare; implication * Introduction Most languages in the world have particular linguistic devices for expressing purposes implicitly and explicitly. Purposive adjuncts (PAs) are some of those...

Article Summary

...(NCW) in 2004 confirmed that employees spent over $3.1 billion annually to attempt to resolve the employee’s writing deficiencies. Even to communicate via email, employees must possess very basic writing skills. This is one of the top priorities of a successful employee. New graduates from exemplary colleges are producing students who lack skills in basic spelling, sentence structure, and grammar. According to the publishers of the American College Test (ACT), grammar is the most important skill for students entering college however high school teachers consider it to be the least important skill. Grammar has been taught using a rule-based approach. This approach focused on teaching grammar rules with a focus on the form (present, past, future, etc.). Teachers provided students with repetitive drills and grammar or punctuation exercises, which over time proved to be ineffective. The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)in 2006 affirmed its position regarding the use of grammar drills in a news release stating that most English teachers do not see themselves as “grammar police” patrolling for sentence-level deficiencies in their students’ writing. This approach has since been abandoned by most educators and NCTE. Contrary to the rule-based approach, the context-based approach focuses on what students are reading and writing...

Writing

...Ronny Chan Janet Allwork ENGL 1130 January 2016 A Writing Experience Writing has never been my forte. At best, I survived the earlier years of my school life with average remarks from English teachers who assessed me. However, due to a lack of confidence in my own writing, English classes became incredibly difficult in my final years of high-school. Attempting to obtain better grades, I recall trying to absorb the almost formulaic method of writing my grade 11 and 12 teachers taught, and applied it. Nevertheless, I understood that this method was clearly not improving anything when I received my mark for the English 12 provincial. Being ill prepared for post-secondary writing is not a situation unique to myself. Rather, it is a common phenomenon for student writers of my generation. As mentioned, many student writers of my generation suffer from the same lack of proper writing education as I did when stepping into the world of post-secondary. In fact, recent studies suggest that the writing process being primed into student writers like myself during high-school is too linear, and fails to prepare them for the level of writing post-secondary schools demand for. This is because student writers are being educated to “separate the writing process into discrete stages” (Sommers 135). Moreover, due to the linear nature of current models of the writing process taught in schools, students tend to write in ways that resemble speech and as a result, neglect an important...

Although ‘language learning’ is considered less important than language acquisition, most of what is learned has been coming from the formal teaching in school. It is also said that the acquisition of grammatical structures follows a ‘natural order’ which is predictable. For a given language, some grammatical structures tend to be acquired early while others late. It can be derived that language learning could also be predictable and that grammatical structures...

...have they contributed to your personal achievements and enhanced your self-development? (please limit your answer to 500 words) A good teacher is like a candle “I had never been interested in English until today. Mr. Shi, Thank you!” This was the text message I received from one of my students after one of my classes when I was an English teacher in a private foreign language training school. This kind of message encourages me to teach, even if only part-time. To me, a teacher's greatest joy is seeing his/her students have success. Only two weeks before, it was almost impossible to get the student say even a single English word. I have a special way to ignite the students’ interest to learn. My secret is to teach live English, because only when you apply the language into everyday life, can you find the joy of learning the language. I play American film clips in class, usually animations, because the language is easier to follow and learn. The assignment I give to the students is to use the sentences learned in the film in daily communication. Thus the students not only know when to use the expressions, but also get involved in applications, which is the essence of education. Teaching has always been a big part of my life. My teaching experience began about ten years ago. During the first winter vacation of my university, I volunteered to teach English to my neighbors’ children. Speaking in front of a group of inquiring faces, I wish I could tell them everything I knew...

Wikipedia Birth

...The pros and cons of Wikipedia This month Wikipedia celebrated its sixth birthday. Earlier this month the number of articles in English on Wikipedia crossed 1.5 million (the number stands at 1,587,588 as of this writing). This number grows by almost 2000 every single day. Compared to this the number of articles in Encyclopedia Britannica (over 122,264) is a far cry. More than a million people visit Wikipedia every day (more than half of whom visit the English language pages). 5 out of every 100 internet users visit Wikipedia daily. Only 11 other sites are visited by more people. Wikipedia is very often at the top of Google search results (almost always in the top 10 results) for things ranging from ideologies (communism - 1, capitalism - 1); sports (cricket - 2, football - 3); sciences (economics - 1, literature - 3); places (India - 1, France - 1, Budapest - 2); people (Sachin Tendulkar - 1, Einstein - 2); objects (water - 2, chair - 1). Many things are taking place here. On the one hand, articles are being created at a rate, depth, and detail, which are utterly unprecedented. For instance, Wikipedia has detailed and easily accessible articles about "Triskaidekaphobia" and "Perfidious Albion" while a careful search did not reveal any relevant articles in Britannica. On the other hand, more and more people are consulting, quoting, referring to Wikipedia on any number of issues. It is rare to see a blog post these days which does not link to Wikipedia for the background info...
