6.1 Explain How To Adapt Communication With Children And Young Adults

How you communicate will need to be adapted in certain ways when communicating with children and young adults. For example, the language you choose needs to be appropriate for the childâ€TMs age. Using known words and terms will help them understand the context of your communication. Being on the same physical level increases rapport, therefore when you are speaking to smaller children it is a good idea to bend down to their level.
The context of the communication will affect the words and terms you would use. For example, children and young people would be unlikely to understand jargon that would be acceptable to use when speaking to oneâ€TMs peers.
Sometimes there might be issues with communication, for example with a child or young person who does not have English as their first language. In this instance, it might be necessary to use simpler language, and to take time to check that child or young personâ€TMs understanding. In order to build relationships in these cases, it is even more important to ensure you are being understood, without causing offence. A sympathetic and reassuring manner will help, so that the child or young person feels able to communicate their point.

You need to bear in mind that your communication with them can be a learning opportunity. Therefore, ask open questions in order to check their understanding whilst encouraging them to problem solve for themselves. Their questions need to be answered fully, so that they are satisfied, and can come away from the conversation having learnt something new. This said, it is important to answer a question at the right level of intricacy for the age and experience of the child you are speaking
