Of Mice and Men

...Of Mice And Men In the masterful story Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck there is a looming theme of loneliness. This theme is told to you through the words and actions of the characters in the story . This story is told through two characters Lennie and George. The setting is 1930’s America. The story involves traveling ranch workers that live only for the one purpose to get paid and waste their money on a few drinks and some pleasure. These men are consumed with loneliness. The care for nothing but themselves. They are very unlike George and Lennie who have each other and a dream. Lennie is a big man with the brain of a child. Lennie never meant to hurt anybody but managed to get himself and his only true friend George into trouble. George is a small smart man who has known Lennie all his life and knows to well that Lennie could not survive on his own lets him travel with him as a favor too Lennie’s aunt Loneliness is defined as Without companions; lone. I will use this definition to describe different aspects of Steinbeck’s treatment of loneliness in this novel. Steinbeck’s use of loneliness is in this novel is very noticeable in some of the dialogue like when Lennie accidentally stumbles into Crook’s home in the stable and they talk. "You got George. You know he’s goin’ to come back. S’pose you didn’t have nobody. S’pose you couldn’t go to the bunk-house and play rummy ‘cause you was black...

Brannigan Foods

...Case: Brannigan Foods: Strategic Marketing Planning 1. Problem Statement November 2012: Following three consecutive years of slipped sales, market share and profitability, Bert Clark, vice-president and general manager of Brannigan Foods’ Soup Division, is given a high priority task: He must decide on which marketing strategy shall the company take in order to: * achieve short-term numbers needed * US Soup Division profit growth of 3% in 2013 * strengthen the long-term direction of both company and its most reputable brand 2. Situation Analysis – Market Summary Regarding customer behaviour and market trends, important insights arise from analysing Julian DeGennaro’s (Brannigan Market Analyst) summary report. Starting with customer behaviour it can be said that, at least, 3 out of 4 consumers recognise canned food as useful to have at home, point cold weather as a trigger for eating soup and agree that soup is part of a healthy diet. Moreover, soup consumption in U.S. household averages 1.4 cans per week, with the segment of 18-24 average rising up to 2.1 cans/week. Concerning market trends, it can be said that soup is still regarded as a seasonal buy and a low-innovation product. Yet, it is noteworthy that Healthy-living solutions have been pointed as a need for children, among whom obesity concerns are especially important. Senior consumers, who have been described as brand loyal and heavy soup users, also show growing health concerns and tend to...

Suggestion on Osha in Toyota

...SUGGESSTION AND RECOMMENDATION According to Bostelman (n.d), OSHA estimates that there are 110,000 accidents each year and $135 000 000 immediate costs are incurred due to forklift accidents. This is happened in Toyata branch in US. There are over 1 million forklifts in operation in the United States with an estimated 2 million operators (6 million including part time operators) and nearly 2 000 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in use in the US. Forklifts are a necessary piece of material handling equipment for many industries. If used properly, they can reduce employee injuries. Unfortunately, they can also pose some safety risks to drivers, pedestrians, and other equipment and goods. If I work there I would to suggest reducing forklift accidents which are driver training, safety procedures, equipment maintenance, restricted or designated areas of operation and facility design. While these strategies will always be elements of workplace safety programs, collision statistics clearly indicate that training, signage, and floor markings for traffic control are not enough to assure a safe environment. Real-time monitoring and control can improve both safety and efficiency. Firstly as an employee I will follow the OSHA checklist; enforce the requirement that all drivers wear seatbelts. Ergonomics of vehicles are currently difficult so change the driver’s seat so that the driver is not required to turn his/her head backwards to see in the direction of travel when the forklift is...

Fin 321 - Chapter 2: Research Problem 2

...Question – Chapter 2: Research Problem 2 When Oprah gave away Pontiac G6 sedans to her TV audience, was the value of the cars taxable? On Labor Day weekend in 2006, World Furniture Mall in Plano, Illinois, gave away $275,000 of furniture because the Chicago Bears shut out the Green Bay Packers in the team’s football season opener at Lambeau Field in Green Bay (26-0). Was the free furniture in the form of a discount or rebate taxable, or should the furniture company have handed the customers a Form 1099-MISC? Response After thoroughly researching taxable and nontaxable income, the Pontiac G6 sedans awarded to Oprah’s television audience would have been subject to federal taxation and included in their gross income. The Code of Federal Regulations states the taxable and nontaxable income to be included in one’s federal taxes, the code reads that “if you win a prize in a lucky number drawing, television or radio quiz program, beauty contest, or other event, you must include it in your income” (Prizes and Awards, 2003). The fair market value of all prizes and awards, other than certain scholarships, must be included in gross income (Hoffman p. 4-33). In further research, CNN Money reported that the cars Oprah gave away were indeed subject to federal taxation. Pontiac agreed to pay most of the local charges, including state sales tax and licensing fees, but the fair market value of the car, $28,500, was still subject to be added to the taxpayer’s gross income. The audience members...

Brannigan Foods

...BRANNIGAN FOODS In this case, Bert Clark, vice-president and general manager of Brannigan’s Foods’ Soup division has been tasked with analysing the investment recommendations from his four key managers. Their proposals are based on the review of Julian DeGennaro’s annual ‘State of the Soup Industry’ report; as well as on Brannigan’s financial statements from previous years. In DeGennaro’s report, we notice that the sluggish economy is a good incentive for consumers to eat at home – with soup being an economical option, especially during the colder months. There are noted to be high growth rates in convenient and healthy products to cater to consumer’s needs. As a whole, Brannigan’s is not currently viewed as a health-conscious or diet-friendly brand, however they remain perceived as a leader in soup sales and retain a loyal consumer segment with the aging population. The manager’s proposals focus on some of the market trends, and the strengths and weaknesses of Brannigan’s brand. Below, we have ranked the four proposals based on our qualitative and quantitative analyses of each scenario to identify which proposal should be favored by Clark and which would be most viable for the company absent any resource constraints. A positive aspect highlighted by Pugh would be that modernizing the manufacturing plant would require a $22 million investment, but would ultimately generate profits and be considered an asset on the Balance Sheet. Furthermore, reintroducing the...

...Running head; Bramante Bramante October 13, 2012 Bramante The High Renaissance was full of artists that had amazing ideas and among those artist was Donato D’ Angelo Bramante, who is actually know for bring the value of ancient architecture into the time of the Renaissance. In the eyes of people today he is known to be the founder of the High Renaissance architectural design. In my paper I will tell you a little about him, give examples of his work and explain how his architecture helped to change the Renaissance. Donato D’ Angelo Bramante, was “Born in Urbino and trained as a painter (perhaps by Piero Della Francesca), Bramante went to Milan in 1481 and, like Leonardo, stayed there until the French arrived in 1499. In Milan, he abandoned painting to become one of his generation’s most renowned architects. Under the influence of Filippo Brunelleschi, Leon Battista Alberti, and perhaps Leonardo, all of whom strongly favored the art and architecture of classical antiquity, Bramante developed the High Renaissance form of the central-plan church.” (Kleiner. F, 2010 p.g. 475). Bramante’s architectural style, based on ancient Roman models, was consistent with the humanistic values of the day. (Kleiner.F, 2010 p.g.475) He’s known for what he wanted his perspective to be and achieving it. Bramante used misconception in features of his paintings and stage settings to create...

The Little Prince Essay

...author leaves the desert as a changed person. He agrees with the little prince's thought: 'the stars are beautiful, because of a flower that cannot be seen';. The rose is very fragile and needs constant care. Love is not a matter of choice; it is a matter of consequence; indeed, it is a matter of survival. Men must learn to love one another or expire. Love is what gives life meaning. The little prince's love for his rose is so important to him that his love gives the author's life purpose and direction. The fox teaches the little prince how to love. It is the time that one 'wastes'; on someone or something that makes it important. It is the fox that tells us how love overcomes existentialism: 'One only knows the things that one tames… Men buy things already made in the stores. But as there are no stores where friends can be bought, men no longer have friends.'; The three volcanoes represent our problems. The active volcano is our current problems; the extinct, our past trials, and the dormant, the...
