Modern day 8th graders have to juggle hours of schoolwork, a social life, sports, and in some cases work. The question posed by many is, “why do teenagers not have earlier bedtimes or bedtimes in general”? The answer to that question is not as simple as one might initially infer. The answer all factors down to the fact that teenagers are not able to stick to a bedtime. Many have wondered whether a set time for 8th graders to go to sleep will leave them better off, even though it will only do the opposite. 8th graders are not able to, and should not have to stick to a strict bedtime because they will not be able to complete their assigned schoolwork and busy schedules, they should be considered to be responsible enough to make their own decisions, …show more content…
Firstly, 8th graders know their schedules, and the amount of time it will take them to complete it. Using that knowledge, they can make the choice for themselves on what time they should be asleep by. Those students know better than their parents what time they can be asleep by in order to get a good night’s sleep. Additionally, Greek philosopher and scientist, Aristotle once said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” To follow, adolescents are able to learn from the mental, physical, and emotional consequences that were a result of their mistakes regarding the amount of sleep their bodies need. Once able to recognize how much sleep they really need, most 8th graders would be responsible enough to change their sleeping habits themselves. That way they are able to complete all tasks expected of them without any additional stress surrounding whether they will get in trouble for not following the strict bedtime set before them. Similarly, making their own judgements on the right time to go to sleep sets them up for independence. If at the age of fourteen people continue to rely on their parents’ advice for things about something as vital as sleep, when entering college and the ‘real world’, parents will not be around to make these arrangements for them. Studies show that there are gene mutations, such as the mutation in the hDEC2 gene, that prevent people from getting 9-10 hours of sleep. Those affected with the mutation would go to sleep at 11:30 pm, and wake up at 4:00 am, not capable of fall back asleep. In these scenarios, not only are bedtimes ineffective, but they also put unneeded stress on those physically incapable of adhering to a strict bedtime. Moreover, for those not affected by a gene mutation, there is still a thing called “too much sleep”. Every single human is different, and no two bodies function the exact same way. This goes for the amount of sleep people, more specifically 8th graders, need. When some get the federal recommended amount of sleep, they are actually left more tired than they would be if they received seven hours of sleep. On that note, there are studies performed by Brigham Young University which found that teens, around the same age as eighth graders, actually performed better on standardized testing when they got seven hours of sleep rather than 9-10 hours of

She defines effective people as people that get the same desired results over and over again; in other words, they are consistent. In order to be effective, one must practice the seven habits she mentions: being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, putting first things first, thinking win-win, seeking first to understand and then be understood, synergizing, and sharpening the saw. Bradley goes through each of these habits describing what the habit entails and what the common mindset is about that habit or a lack of habit. Many of these habits can help one manage their stress. For example, if one begins with the end in mind, according to Bradley, they can live life by design and not be default. This allows them to dictate their life and ensure that they are not constantly being forced to improvise and become stressed because of life's events.
