9/11: Never Forgotten but Never the Same
On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, at 8:46 in the morning, another mundane day began at the office. Millions sat in their desks around the world, living their ordinary lives, when news spread that American Airlines flight number 11 had been hijacked and crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Minutes later, another American Airlines plane flew into the South Tower, killing everyone onboard and hundreds inside the building. As the rest of the day progressed, countries around the world stood in solidarity with the United States, shocked that a tragic event such as this could happen to such an influential world superpower. The terroristic attacks on the United States on September 11th, 2001, …show more content…
The diverse population of Americans from all different cultural backgrounds were then united against one common enemy: Muslims. Although only a small group of radical Muslims orchestrated the attacks, the fear and hatred of Muslims, or the rise of Islamophobia, quickly spread across America. According to the Council of American-Islamic Relations, the word “Islamophobia” describes the “close-minded prejudice against or hatred of Islam and Muslims” (“Same”). Political campaigns contributed in part to this increase in Islamophobia, as former President George W. Bush approved bills that suggested heightened security measures in the United States, such as those that created the Department of Homeland Security and the USA PATRIOT act, both of which made it easier to track down and investigate “suspicious persons,” often people of Middle Eastern descent. Uninformed, fearful Americans, fueled by political vitriol in the form of new bills passed by the United States government appearing to target Muslim or Middle Eastern citizens, began an attack of their own. In 2001, the number of violent hate crimes against Muslims increased from 28 in 2000, to more than 480 following the Twin Towers attack (Kuek Ser). Almost immediately, reckless Americans wished to retaliate against …show more content…
Although for years scholars had said Americans lived in a global village, the havoc wreaked by terrorists on September 11, 2001, proved this fact for the first time. Robert Kaiser shows this when he comments, “Never before had the world so intimately shared the same tragic disaster” (“September”). After the World War II era, the United States’ job as a country was to police the rest of the world and promote peace, democracy, and capitalism. However, after the devastating assault on American soil, its focus rapidly shifted to keeping America itself safe. Often seen as the invincible superpower, the idea of American exceptionalism was present in the minds of not only American citizens but also those living in other areas of the world. American exceptionalism can be defined as the “belief that the United States differs qualitatively from other developed nations because of its national credo, historical evolution, or distinctive political and religious institutions”(“American”). Knowing that the United States needed support to fight against Al-Qaeda in the War on Terror, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization invoked Article Five, for the first time, of its founding treaty, the treaty of Washington, which claims that participating members pledge to offer support and aid to another country in

...September 11, 2001 9/11 was an inside job. A bold statement to a beginning of a bold paper. Several credible people support this claim. 9/11 is a very touchy subject, as it should be. This research paper will offend most people. The attack was very real. The deaths were very real. The people responsible for the attack was not the Taliban. 9/11 was an inside job, 9/11 was a false flag operation designed to get the American people to back a war that we had no business to be in. ...One of the Muslim Leaders would include Zuhdi Jasser, President of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, and also Stephen Schwartz, Executive Director of the Center for Islamic Pluralism. Another argument that many Muslims and other supporters of the Mosque are arguing is prior to the September 11 terrorists attacks there was a Mosque in the Twin Towers. Though, since 2001 the number of Mosques within the United States has increased by over 74%. (USAToday) As of today there are over 275 mosques in New York where Muslims can worship freely. (World Atlas) The rate of mosques in New York and increased greatly since the 9/11 terrorist attack, which shows the freedom of religion within the United States. The real question still remains as to why a mosque has to be built at “Ground Zero”. Fellow Muslims even believe prominent leaders in the construction of the Mosque are not for the Mosque in good faith. Such an act is strictly prohibited in the true beliefs of the Quran (Quran Explorer). There is in a sense enough reason to not build the mosque because prominent leaders of the Muslim religion even believe their fellow Muslims are not pursuing the construction in good faith of Islam, but rather as a...

...When thinking about the sinking of the Lusitania and the attack of 9/11, what comes to mind are the phases of disaster the victims may have experience. The victims will respond to a disaster often by move through the following four phases of disaster response. The phases are: The heroic phase, the honeymoon phase, the disillusionment phase, and the reconstruction (Adams, 1999) the heroic phase, the first of the four phases of disaster is the one most people experience heedlessly of the type of disaster they are facing. Both after the Lusitania and 9/11 disaster happened bystanders rushed to the aid of others in need. After the Lusitania was hit and sinking, fishermen that were in the area put their own lives at risk and came to the aid of anyone who was still alive and then later helped recover bodies. ...Following 9/11 there was a sense of fear like no other into the minds of the American people. This fear was if Americans were safe from terrorist groups entering the US, and the trauma from what some Americans experienced on 9/11. In his novel, John Botte reflects on his thoughts after experiencing ground zero, "Along with thousands of others who lost loved ones to 9/11, I relive the events of that day every day” (Botte 5). Botte’s statement accurately reflects the emotions of many Americans, and after 9/11 the US sought to make some drastic changes to secure the US from external threats. Arguably the most controversial law put in place to protect the people was the Patriot Act. Put into action just 45 days after 9/11, the Patriot Act is still...

...what is right and stand against violence. Violence has caused a lot of grief for families because of their losses. One type of violence is terrorism. Terrorism is when a group of people or a person use violence or force to scare other people. I chose this type of violence because terrorism has been happening for many years and many people have died because of this. One major terrorist attack that is commonly known is 9/11. Where four planes were taken over by hijackers and three were crashed into the “Twin Towers.” Many bystanders saw the building crash. There were people who cried for their family member who they knew were in the building. Firefighters and police officers were at the scene instantly and tried their best to find if there were any survivors left. Even though the police saved some people, this terrorist attack ended up killing almost three thousand people. Since 9/11, the U.S has improved airport security and equipment that is able to detect weapons. 9/11 was a tragic day for everyone but it showed what the U.S did to help. The U.S responded to 9/11 by supporting suffering families and, as I mentioned...

...equipment” (Guide, 2002, p.10). CBS News (as cited by Steinhäusler, Edwards, & MyiLibrary, 2005) stated in Greenville, S.C. on October 15, 2003, ricin was detected at a mail facility, an offsite location where mail is processed for the White House. Three postal workers came in contact with the envelope, which was taken to another Greenville facility. The postal workers noticed that the package read “caution Ricin poison” and called law enforcement officials (Irves, 2004). The law enforcement officials took the mail to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, which later found that the envelope did contain ricin. Although, no one was hurt it was a potential threat to any of the postal officials and first responders. During the 9/11 attack, the impact of the plane killed many people. Some contributing factors as noted by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States (2004) “it is possible that a person who worked above the impact zone had not yet reached his or her office and was killed below the impact zone, either by fallen debris, fireballs from the explosion, or by being trapped in an elevator” (p. 553). The extent of damage to the Twin Towers turned the firefighting effort into an evacuation. While getting citizens out of the towers, the first responders were dealing with the heat and smoke from the disaster. Their personal protect equipment (PPE) gloves, pants, jackets, gas masks, helmets, oxygen tanks, etc. helped the first responders...

...There shouldn’t be a right religion to follow or anything. We shouldn’t encourage someone to do something they don’t want to because it’s “hip”. Everyone should be able to decide what’s right for them. We should let our actions define who we are, but instead I feel like we let society define who are. For example, the yolo trend. Another example, is after 9/11 Muslims were being targeted on streets so people could seek rebubustation for the attack that a group of people classified themselves as “Muslims”. Most people think Islam is a terrorist group and we only believe in violence, and the women only live to be “slaves” for their husband however this is far from the truth. I could say from first hand experience, that Islam is a religion with loving participants that will go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and are free willed. For example, when someone comes over to our house we make sure the person doesn’t have problems in their lives, if they do, we typically try to resolve the issues, and I believe my mother runs the household and not my father; she will tell my father what he...

...A memorial is a structure that honors a person or several people. When people think about the World Trade Center and the Twin Towers they think about September 11, 2001. There is much more history to the World Trade Center than this. Most people do not know that there was another attack on the towers before September 11. The 9/11 memorial honors all people lost in the terror attacks of 1993 and 2001. The World Trade Center consists of seven buildings. The main buildings were the Twin Towers. The Twin Towers construction started in 1966 and was completed in 1973 although tenants started to arrive in 1970. The antenna started being used in 1980. The North Tower was 1,730 feet high with a multi purpose antenna on top of it, the south tower was 1,362 feet high each with 110 floors. On a good day when you were...
