As the novel is told to us through the words of Changez, he is obviously considered to be the protagonist; the source of a large part of the angst which resonates from the text. Another prominent character in the novel, Erika, pulls away from the complete focus on Changez, adding in on another of the main sources of tension, as well as a part of the reasons for Changez’ change in identity. Another cause of tension comes from The American as well as the waiter, who occur outside of Changez’ narrative and add an undercurrent of mistrust. These characters add to the strain in the text, bringing in suspicion and highlighting many of the issues that Changez raises in his narrative and left ambiguous to allow for interpretation. From the obvious similarities between Changez’ name and change, it can be seen that Changez himself is a symbol for change. These changes that Changez experiences coincide with his shifting identity. In the case of realists, they have an objective view and often use the factual, scientific and quantifiable evidence to understand theories. ...Out of this week’s readings, I much preferred the short story, Fear & Loathing in America to The New York Times article. I found myself rather bored reading the article about the many sporting events being called off, immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I will admit that I am not much of a sports fan - especially not American sports teams – however I tried to read the article with an open mind. Litsky and Williams (2011) wrote the article in a very fact-based, typical news story way, which meant that if the reader is not at all interested in the subject matter, the narrative style does nothing to make the reader interested in reading on. Even the title sparked little interest; I was surprised they did not use the words, ‘terrorist attacks’ in the title, as most media like to grab the reader’s attention immediately. ...United 93 Review – Unorthodox Award Paul Greengrass’ raucous portrayal of film United 93 demonstrates and explores the unexpected tragedy of the 9/11 only 5 years ago, through the impotence of the characters, pace and overall cinematography. Greengrass’ use of characterisation conveyed the clear sense of powerlessness over the tragedy, illustrating the enmity between eastern and western beliefs and cultures revealing a dominant divide between cultures and religion which may not have been considered previously by some viewers. Meanwhile, the use of little to no known bought the film home as it enforced the realness of the events that took place in the movie and made the audience look into not only the true meaning of the film but look deeply at themselves, giving them a reality check about the society we live in today; not just the dilly dallying of the ‘to see’ actors of that month. However, although many may applaud Greengrass’ portrayal of the characters, (many of whom were based on people who were really effected in the 9/11), the film has also been ‘criticized for its portrayal of German passenger Christian Adams,’ who was the only passenger the plane ‘demonstrated with counselling appeasement.’ All in all, we must ask ourselves, did we go to watch it to get a good laugh out of it or get an insight into our increasingly cracking society?
