Bungee jumping is one of the most extreme sports today. It has been around for many years and has been done for recreation as well as religious and traditional purposes. There are many different parts to bungee jumping then many people know. Bungee jumping can be fun but dangerous if the jumper is not careful.

Bungee jumping originated in the Pentecost Islands in the New Hebrides where men of a native tribe proved their manhood and to ensure a good yam harvest by jumping off a bamboo tower, which was 25 meters high, with a vine tied to their feet. The more modern bungee jumping originated in New Zealand in the late 80s, when jumpers used a rubber rope. This began in April 1979 when four people bungee jumped off the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England, but bungee jumping became famous by A.J. Hackett, who jumped from the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. His jump was on TV channels all over the world. As a result, became popular France, and eventually spread to other European countries, and is now a worldwide sport. It is also said that it originated from New Guinea. Men leaped from very tall wooden towers attached to the tower by vines tied to their ankles, it was originally used as a test of courage but has since been converted into a recreational activity and is seen to be a once in a lifetime thrilling experience. The sport is simple yet exciting; jumping from a tall platform i.e. a bridge or a crane whilst attached to a length of elastic chord.

A lot of calculations must be done before a bungee jump to ensure the safety of the jumper. The chord must be exactly the right length to give the best (yet safest) possible experience. If the chord is too short the jumper may not feel the optimum thrill however if the chord is too long it would probably result in the jumper being killed as they would hit the floor (go splat). I am going to do an experiment in order to find the exact height a fixed weight figure would need to jump from - with a certain length chord - in order to stop them just before they hit the ground.

In the sport of bungee jumping, there is a set of 5 individual cords that are grouped together in a set of 3, 4 or 5. This allows a person from 100 to 250 pounds to jump safely. There are different types of cords but the most common are the "Euro Cord" which were created and used in Europe and the "Mil Spec Cord" which were made by the US military, and were originally designed to hold down tanks on boats and in planes. This makes the "Mil Spec Cord" safer and more durable. Harnesses are also used during the jump. The Leg Harness and The Body Harness are the most commonly used in the jump. During the jump, the Leg Harness is used and in most clubs or professionally supervised jumps, the Body Harness is also used as a secondary safety harness. There are also custom made harnesses for unprofessional jumps. Though these are not as safe, they are usually effective.

This movement or more properly called settlement, to some, is referred to as “the Great Leap Westward.” So, why do so many people call Tennessee’s settlement a “Great Leap Westward”? People called Tennessee’s settlement a “Great Leap” because of Tennessee’s unique geography, the hardship the people endured in order to get into to Tennessee, and the Tennessean settlements physical placement. Leap Motion is about to release a new device that will change how we control and interact with our computers. The device is called The Leap and it is a 3-D motion tracking device. It can be connected to a computer or any other computing device and the user can use the gestures of their hands instead of keyboard or mouse. It is kind of like the X-box Kinect but “more powerful, more accurate, smaller, cheaper, and just more impressive.” (Pierce, 2012). The Leap is set for public release in February of 2013. Leap Motion has set the price at $69.99. The device is currently about the size of an usb flash drive but could end up being as small as a dime before being released to the public (Pierce, 2012). It can track your movement to 0.01 mm (Pierce, 2012). Also it can track all ten of your fingers and thumbs individually as well as anything you may have in your hands. It creates a 3-D workspace of about eight cubic feet, however multiple devices can be linked together to create a bigger space. According to David Pierce on the website www.theverge.com, “VGA camera sensors within the device create the space”. The Leap can open up the possibilities for many different uses. Mao Zedong

...Mao Zedong is considered to be one of the most controversial political leaders of the twentieth century. He has been known both as a savior and a tyrant to the Chinese people. From his strategic success of the Long March, to his humiliating failure of the Great Leap Forward, to the Cultural Revolution that shocked the country and took countless lives, Mao has significantly influenced the result of what China is today. From humble origins, Mao Zedong rose to absolute power, unifying with an iron fist a vast country torn apart by years of weak leadership, imperialism, and war. This astute and insightful account by Jonathan D. Spence brings to life this modern-day ruler and the tumultuous era that Mao Zedong did so much to shape. Mao Zedong was born on December 26, 1893 in Shaoshan village in Hunan. He experienced a middle peasant upbringing that was “rooted in long-standing rural Chinese patterns of expectation and behavior” (Mao, 10). Mao went to Shaoshan village school where he learned the customary Chinese curriculum as well as studied the “time-honored texts from the Confucian canon” (Mao, 11). At this time in his childhood, the whole country could foresee the fall of the previous dynasty, the Qing. Mao studied to be a teacher at The First Provincial Normal School, in Changsha, which influenced his future thinking and beliefs. He believed that the Chinese way of thinking needed reform, therefore fixated on younger people and peasants to build his political career. In 1912...

Kierkegard

...subjective reflection was more crucial to the individual life than objective reflection, because subjective reflection focuses on passion and human existence rather than logic and impersonal truth. The objective world is the world of facts and truth, independent of the perceptions of humans.  Objective reflection focuses on what actually is, in the real world. Objective reflection centers on the things and ideas in the world that give meaning to life. The subjective world is the world of human thoughts, feelings, and perceptions.  It focuses on the relationship between people and their thoughts, feelings and perceptions, in respect to their lives. It centers on how meaning in life is viewed subjectively, or how humans find meaning in their lives.  To Kierkegaard, subjective reflection is the relationship to what a person values in life.         One major difference I noticed in the reading, between the objective and subjective realms, is in regards to 'being' versus 'becoming'.  Kierkegaard stated, “the objective world is as it is: being”. The subjective world is always 'becoming' something else through internal conflicts and struggle. However, the latter difference then creates a chain, as another difference arises between the two realms. The objective world is based in reason, while the subjective world is based in passion.        Kierkegaard believed that subjective reflection is the key understanding meaning in life. In a sense, he complains about the objective reflection...

Marconi’s invention opened up the doors to big and better ideas for radio. 2. Question: The development of the Internet is often compared to the development of television. Television was a direct outgrowth of radio and represented a great leap forward from radio. What you think will be the next emerging “big leap forward” in mass media? Answer: The answer is not what will be the next “big leap forward,” but what is, and that is talking on the phone is now transforming to texting on the phone. When cell phones first were introduced, we were only able to talk on the new invention. Though as time went by we improved our neext. Where we can just send one another a few words and be done with it. The cell phone was first big and bulky but now it is small and sleek. We cannot only make phone calls but text each other. This is what is already a “big leap forward.” Texting is already chosen over phone conversations. Texting would be consider a “big leap forward” because most conversations now days are through texting....

Future Statement

...The future has many possibilities, positive and negative. There are endless amounts of studies and research being done to help bring forth tomorrow and a legacy we’re proud to leave to our children. One of the major problems we’re facing today is Oxygen consumption. We have no way of producing Oxygen efficiently, other than photosynthesis. Well, a student of the Royal College of Art by the name of Julian Melchiorri, along with help from the Tufts University Silk Lab, has helped us take a giant leap towards a real solution. They have created a synthetic leaf that breathes just like a real one. “The leaf is made up of chloroplasts from plant cells, the part where photosynthesis happens, suspended in a web of silk protein. The protein was extracted from natural silk fibers” (International Business Times, 2014). This means that, with a small amount of energy, water, and light, we can produce fresh Oxygen anywhere without the limitations of agriculture. “My idea was to use the efficiency of nature in a man-made environment” (Hobson, 2014). The first thought that comes to mind when those words were uttered: Deep-Sea and Space Travel. If we are able to produce Oxygen synthetically, then we no longer need Oxygen tanks for submarines or spacecraft. We can traverse all of these new reigns without worry of running out of breathable air. Who knows what we’ll find there? Most likely case, we’ll discover species we’ve never known to exist, and those that were only rumors for generations....

Romantic Essay

...in tranquility”. He sees poetry as acting like Nature, which touches all living things and inspires and delights them. Therefore, poem is an instrument that draws attention to the hidden, unnoticed beauties of nature. In addition, Wordsworth also emphasizes the relationship between the mind and poetry. The “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” leaves an individual incapable of articulating the beauty of nature, thus these feelings should be “recollected in tranquility” and deep thought. “My heart leaps up when I behold” is one of the best poems that convey Wordsworth’s definition The poem encompasses all of the themes central to Romantic movement such as the importance of the emotion, the important of nature, the transience of joy, and the sanctity of childhood. Nature and its connection to humanity makes an appearance in the vast majority of Wordsworth’s poetry, often holding a poem’s focus, thus the important of nature is introduced in the first two lines: “My heart leaps up when I behold/ A Rainbow in the sky.” (Line 1, 2) He is moved emotionally by the beauty of nature and his experience out of doors as he gazes at the sky, as “the spontaneous overflow of human feeling”. Therefore, the connection between him and the nature will be constant until he becomes an old man, or else he would rather die: “So be it when I shall grow old; / Or let me die.”(Line 5,6) Wordsworth always wants to have a natural affinity for nature, as does a child, and always wants to find creative...

Finding the Romance in Romantic Literature: William Wordsworth as Founding Father of Romantic Poetry

...Although love may occasionally show itself as a muse of Romantic poetry it has very little to do with Romanticism. Romanticism is considered to be an international artistic and philosophical movement that redefined the fundamental ways in which people in Western cultures thought about themselves and about their world.(Brooklyn College) The early Romantic period begins with the first edition of Lyrical Ballads by William Wordsworth - co-written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. I'm going to specifically refer to three poetic works by Wordsworth when referring to the imagination, nature, and emotion used as components of Romantic Literature: "The Tables Turned", "My Heart Leaps Up", and "I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud." Imagination was considered to be one of the highest faculties of the mind during the Romantic era. The Romantics used their imaginations as the ultimate shaping tool for their literature. It was their creative power in that it was dynamic, active, and provided many functions for creating all art. Wordsworth suggested that it is also the faculty that helps humans to constitute reality for we not only perceive the world around us, but also in part create it. The Romantics are also extremely concerned with the healing nature of the imagination in that it can reconcile differences and opposites in the world of appearance. It inextricably enables us to "read" nature as a system of symbols. (Brooklyn College) Wordsworth uses all aspects of the Romantic view of imagination...
