I tried to erase the memories from those four days. Soon I realized that that was not the answer. I didn't want to forget, so I just stored the memories in the back of my mind, and now, when I am sad, I remember.I remember how we danced, how we laughed.

He was a nice boy. He didn't show off much, he wasn't mean. He was genuine. He was that boy at school that wasn't amazingly good looking but somehow still managed to go out with the prettiest and more popular girls. The ones who only wanted a man for the sake of having one. I just wish I was like the other girls. Because, I make myself think that boys only like girls with skimpy dresses, blond hair and long legs, even though I know it's not always true. I wear men's t-shirts and converse and the other girls try to stand out, they wear cropped things and try to be different. I don't like sticking out.
My friends, my family, pretty much everyone I have known have always told me 'never change yourself for someone'.I never really plan on changing myself, what would I change?
My face? No
My hair? No
My body? Maybe
I like to think that without all my flaws I wouldn't be me.If I didn't laugh loudly, if I wasn't as tactile, if I wasn't as shy. Without that, I wouldn't be me. I would be a stranger to myself.
So..I suppose that one of the hardest things that a person has to do is find another person who can see beyond those flaws. Who can see that they are not flaws. They are you. You are made up of thousands of flaws. You are not perfect. You are not a doll. You have good days and you have bad days.

Grant Wood American Gothic Analysis

...For this art assignment, I have chosen the famous painting American Gothic by Grant Wood. The subject matter of this painting is a middle aged couple standing in front of a farm, the man is holding a pitchfork. While the woman is looking off in the distance of the man the facial expressions of the couple looks serous as if they are unhappy with their marriage. In the background of the of the painting is a house with a gothic style window hinting the name American Gothic for the painting. Grant Wood painted this painting in 1930 for an exhibition in Chicago. The panting give me a type of mysterious feeling due to the facial expressions of the man and woman. The colors used in the painting are mostly dark giving the feeling of depression towards the viewers. Wood may have done this because of the time period it was painted, which was during the being of the depression. Also this could be the reason of the unhappiness that is expressed in the faces of the man and woman....

Robert Frost

...Have you ever taken the time to stop and just watch the snow fall from a cold winters night? In the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost, he did just that. Not only is this poem about that, but there is also something deeper, as this poem can be read on many different levels. Has this traveler made promises that he no longer wants to keep? While deep into the snowy woods, the man has to make the decision to keep on going or stop and live the way he has always dreamed of. This poem may seem short and simple, but the implications beneath the story are much greater. In the first stanza, Robert Frost goes on to explain that the man is stopping in the woods to watch the snow fall, but he knows that the land he is stopping on is owned by another man. He goes on to assume that the owner lives in the village and will not see him standing out there. Could this be some sort of death wish? In the second stanza, the horse that the man had rode on, seems to think that it is strange that they are stopped in the middle of no where without any houses near. The third stanza also reiterates this by telling us that the horse is shaking his bells, a way to ask the man if there is a mistake or if everything is okay. The fourth stanza is the most important one of this poem. The first line of the fourth stanza Frost writes “The woods are lovely, dark and deep” (line: 13) is the first implication that this poem is darker then what is described in the first three stanzas...

The Importance Of Setting In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

...Brown began to “roar” running through the forest, as he was “himself the chief horror of the scene” (Hawthorne 334). Running on into the forest, Brown notices “a pulpit, surrounded by four blazing pines, their tops aflame;” Brown had encountered an evil assembly. The evil assembly is a parody of Christian practices that often take place in Church; The burning pines represent the candles that surround an alter. Intrigued, Brown approached the assembly. He listens as a man spoke “in a deep and solemn tone, almost sad with its despairing awfulness,” a voice one may compare to the devil himself (Hawthorne 337). Brown, already overcome by the evil of the woods, surrenders to the devil. Brown’s heart is frosted, even “a hanging twig, that had been all on fire, besprinkled his cheek with the coldest dew” and although surrounded by pain and suffering, Brown was no longer affected it (Hawthorne 337). The woods destroy any sense of feeling Brown once had, both emotionally and physically, due to the evils...

Robert Frost Ambiguity

...“Miles to go before I sleep” Robert Frost’s poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, is a few lines describing a man’s horse ride through the woods, but it speaks to everyone who reads it about major questions concerning their lives. In Stanley Burnshaw’s Biography, “Robert Frost”, he said, “In the great short lyrics of New Hampshire (1923) and West-Running Brook (1928)—such as “Fire and Ice,” “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” and the title poem of the latter book—a bleak outlook on life persuasively emerges from the combination of dramatic tension and nature imagery freighted with ambiguity”. Frost was a powerful poet who used metaphors and imagery in his writings; for that reason most of his written work is discussed at the academic level and his work can often be...

Signature Work of a Legendary American Poet

...key example of the use of this strategy within Frost’s body of work is his signature poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” In the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” is about a man who on a dark evening stops his sleigh to watch the snow falling in the woods. He is concerned that he is on someone else’s property but enjoying the moment of peace in the woods, he then realizes that he knows the owner who lives in town and can continue enjoying the magnificent time of being in this silence. He knows that he is on someone else’s property and the rules are being broken here. This brings to light the larger issue of individuals and groups not following rules or laws design to protect them merely because they believe no one is looking. His horse is confused as to why they are stopping in the middle of the woods on one of the darkest days as the man is enjoying the frozen lake and snow. The horse seems to symbolize the human conscience and the drive to do the right thing for the good of society even in tough circumstances. The horse’s role in snapping the man back into reality could represent are necessity to take stock of both the morality and the effects of our actions. The man clearly likes the woods although he knows he has many miles of road ahead of him and other obligations to fulfill. In the ending of the poem it’s as if he knows the woods are depressing and peaceful but he does not want to end up dead without completing his duties in life...

Frost's the Wood Pile

...‘The Wood-Pile’, showcases these themes. A single story is often told by his assorted works; to consciously move away from modernized society in order to find something worth understanding. That what can be sought in nature, away from the roles or responsibilities infringed upon man while immersed in a modern society, are of more depth and personal importance than otherwise found. In ‘The Wood-Pile’, Frost uses visual imagery to explore the themes of nature, death, and limitations, showing that man is responsible for his own constraints. The concept of nature within ‘The Wood-Pile’ takes on a separate reality of the subject’s mind. The speaker is able to both influence and react to the nature within the frozen swamp and understand that nature is a separate yet equal force which is actively syncopated with humans. This concept is demonstrated in lines 32, 33, and 34, where Frost writes, “What held it though on one side was a tree / Still growing, and on one a stake and prop / These latter about to fall.” The visual imagery of the stake close to uselessness can be seen as a reflection of nature’s natural tendency to undo what man has impressed upon it. Man and nature’s unity in coexistence holds a tension that is driven by the back and forth of a psychological need to change. The wood pile bears witness to both its creator and on the other end of the spectrum, the force of nature which is an active participant in the demise of the usefulness of the woodpile to man. Nature’s...

Woods Symbolism In Scarlet Letter

...In the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hawthorne uses many symbols throughout the book that help give a contrast to the outside world. One of the symbols that he uses is the woods that represent a place of evil but also privacy. When Hester enters into the woods with Pearl, Pearl mentions a story about a Black Man who “ haunts the forest and carries a book with him... this ugly Black Man offers this book and an iron pen to everybody that meets him here among the trees; and they are to write their names with their own blood” (p. 161). When hearing this quote, it sounds as if the devil is living in the woods and that is the man that Pearl is talking about. Whenever people think about the devil their minds immediately go to thinking...

Comparative Analysis of Robert Frost

... especially New England landscapes. He uses seasons, flowers, fields, stars, and time of day to set a logical sequence of events to paint a psychological feeling inside the reader’s mind. Two of Robert Frost’s poems, “Desert Places” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, take readers through a New England winter setting, reflecting the beautiful scenery through his descriptive imagery. However, even though these two poems are set in a wintry backdrop, they convey very different tones. One has a feeling of loneliness, and the other a welcoming feeling of solitude. In this paper, I intend to illustrate how two very similar natural settings are written to express two very different themes of loneliness. The poems “Desert Places” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” have quite a few similarities. For instance, they both share the same rhythmic scheme; A,A,B,A. They both are set in a snowy, evening where darkness is taking over quickly. In both poems there is a man traveling alone, where no other souls are around. There is a sense that both travelers are stepping away from life for a brief moment in time. The contrast of darkness and whiteness against the horizon is apparent in both poems, however in “Stopping by Woods”, the depth of the darkness is inviting. In “Desert Places”, the whiteness of the snow is blank and meaningless. This is where Robert Frost’s themes in these two poems begin to emerge to the reader. In the Poem “Desert Places” whiteness and blankness...

The Erl King

...Angela Carter – ‘The Bloody Chamber’ – ‘The Erl-King’. Sources ‘The Erl-King’ is an adaptation of a European tale which draws heavily on folkloric traditions of the Green Man. The Erl-King is the personification of nature, as traditions embark this in the Green Man, ‘when he combs his hair that is the colour of dead leaves’, emphasising as though he is a tree. Therefore this can be linked to Emily Bronte’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ as it too is associated with nature, in the sense of the wild and desolate moors, representing the wilderness and the isolation of nature. The folkloric traditions of the Green Man perceive him as peaceful as he does no harm, embodying him as the protector of nature, a Celtic symbol of creative fertility of nature. ‘He comes alive from the desires of the woods’ further relate the Erl-king and the Green Man as they’re both considered as a symbol of the woods. The perception of ‘The Erl-King’ as peaceful is represented in his lack of disruption to the forest, as the only wood he would chop was ‘the dead branches’. Angela Carter however emphasis the negatives of what the Green Man represents in ‘The Erl-King’ as being a reincarnation of the devil. This is shown through his desire to entrap young girls through the enchantment of the forest, which he abuses in his favour as the protector of nature. Erl-king is perceived as a serial rapist as the birds in cages represent the young girls he raped before and once they grew to love him he would then turn them into...

Wood V Haywood

...Wood vs. Haywood On January 12, 1912, an army of Industrial Workers of the World went on strike from the Wood Mill. They took to the streets to protest their unfair treatment in the workplace and refused to go back in until they got what they wanted: higher wages, better hours, and proper treatment. Two of the heads of the conflict were William M. “Billy” Wood and William D. “Big Bill” Haywood. Billy Wood was the owner of the Wood Mill and Big Bill, who was considered ‘the Lincoln of labor’, was leading the IWW. Both men and their parties stood their ground until the strike was finally resolved two months later. I intend to ask both men about why they stood by their respected parties and never wavered. What would Wood have done if he was in some of the situations the strikers were in? Why does Haywood stand up for the workers? All these questions will be answered on “American Dream.” Jewett: Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to this week’s episode of “American Dream.” As you all know, each week we bring in a historical figure or figures from America’s past and discuss the issues they lived through. This week, our guests will be William M. “Billy” Wood and William D. “Big Bill” Haywood who both played major roles in the Bread and Roses Strike in 1912 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Billy Wood, as he was called, owned the Wood Mill, which was apart of the American Woolen Company. When he died in 1926, he was one of the richest men in America1. Mr. Haywood, who is...

American Gothic

...Grant Wood, American Gothic English Assignment American Gothic American Gothic is a classic American painting by Wood Grant. The traditional painting was created in the year 1930. Wood paints an image of two farmers in the Midwest. Due to time period that the painting was created in (1930s), American Gothic refers to the Great Depression. Wood paints the two farmers expressions with much importance. The man looks right at the viewer with strong determined eyes. He is holding his pitchfork with strength. The woman looks of to the left of the painting. Her expression portrays fear and sadness. Behind the two subjects is a house lit up by the afternoon sun. American Gothic is a very simple painting; two people and a house. The viewers eyes looks first at the man’s intense stare and then continues to wander around the painting. Wood's choice of clothing, hairstyle, color all play important rolls in determining the time setting and to give the painting an overall mood. First of all, the color scheme is very muted one. This gives the painting a depressing mood and a one- dimensional feeling. The many vertical and horizontal lines generate eye movement from pitchfork to the coat of the man on up to the faces of both figures to the window between them; then, as the roof angles, the viewer's eye is led toward the left and right with the roofs of the house and barn. The repetition of shape with the pitchfork and the window helps the viewer to see the...

Advice to Youth

...of its spiritual greatness and intimacy with its everyday workings. Nature is his spiritual guide, leading him in its simple natural rhythms toward his own spiritual path and his proper work. PLOT SUMMARY | Seeking solitude and self-reliance, Thoreau says, he moved to the woods by Walden Pond, outside Concord Massachusetts, where he lived for two years, writing this book, before returning to society. In the book he sets out his beliefs about society and the nature of human existence, saying first that he believes men need not work as hard as they do, if they are willing to simplify their lives and follow their own instincts. Thoreau designs a life of "voluntary poverty" for himself, determining the absolute necessities of man's existence to be: food, shelter, clothing, and fuel. Criticizing society's spiritually empty obsessions with clothing and elaborate homes, as well as with formal education, travel, and the use of animal labor, he praises the savage man, who is free from the distraction of society's institutions and lives a simple life. Thoreau builds his own small cabin, earns some money by working in his bean-field, and keeps meticulous financial records to demonstrate how little a man...

Analysis on Young Goodman Brown

...be accurate. In “Young Goodman Brown”, the main character, Goodman Brown, experiences a life changing revelation at the beginning of this short story. The experience is a walk through the woods, something that he states his father and father’s father embarked on. This particular journey shapes his life and changes him forever. What is particularly peculiar about this journey is that it goes through the woods at night. And during this time period if you were caught in the woods at night you were considered a Satan worshiper, doing the Devil’s brood, or practicing witchcraft, which meant all the same things during this era. We know Young Goodman Brown is a Puritan based on his belief system, so this experience isn’t one he is looking forward to, but he knows he has to do it. Kind of like getting a shot, you know you have to do it, and it’s good for you, but you are hesitant about doing it. So along the journey he meets with a man that looks similar to him, but older. The man is kind of dark and shady, and he carries a staff that looks like a serpent. So the symbolism there represents that this man is the Devil. Throughout the duration of his journey, Goodman Brown sees townspeople in the woods, and the man that resembles the Devil talk to several of them. Knowing that being out in the woods at night associates you with Satan worshiping, he starts to wonder if all the townsfolk are two faced, Puritans by day, and Satan worshipers by night. The uncertainty is the revelation that...
